Was it worth it? (Post #6)

Tonight the president announced the formal end to Iraqi combat operations. While the United States will maintain a presence in that country for training and bureaucratic purposes the war is essentially over in Iraq for America. A recent CBS News poll showed some uncertainty on the part of some americans. The poll asked a small sample of people a variety of questions ranging from "do you support the war" to "do you think the result of the Iraq war was worth the loss of american lives." Was it worth it? Several experts weigh in on this difficult topic and their opinions (see here, opinions) may make a difference in what you think of this national endeavor. With the personal and national sacrifices made and the hundreds of billions spent, what do you think? Was it worth it? Are we more secure today? Whatever your opinion please be respectful of those who made the personal sacrifices necessary for our security.

  1. No I do not think it was worth it because if we didnt win then what was the point in all are men and women going over there and dying.I dont think we are more secure because they could bomb us or something and then we will have to start a war again.I dont think that the president should have called off the war because we just lost billions of dollars by him doing that, if we would of won then it would of been different. So no i dont thnk it was the right thing to do.

  2. We have definently come to be a more secure country. I think in a way the war was good because it gave America a reality check with our economic crisis. Over all the war in my opinion was not worth it. I respect the men and women who fought because it was their job but I dont not think there was something significant to fight for such as the American revolution, except for 9/11.

  3. I don't believe the war should have gone on as long as it has. For the first year, I think it was definitely helpful, to let Iraq know that we are not going to let that fly with us, but I don't personally believe in war. I do definitely support the troops 100% though.

  4. The price of this war was hefty on the US for many reasons, specifically these few:

    1. Both Bush and Obama failed to push the insurgent forces off their feet, sometimes purposefully allowing them to escape our military's grasp, and therefore never managed to destroy the root of the war. Stupid presidential actions, such as firing successful generals out of spite, happen time and time again and continue to work to put the military in confusion and disarray.

    2. Usage and potential of the troops in the war was greatly tuned down, virtually eliminating any effect that was originally intended for the military to have, and destroying and progress gained thus far. This was done in part due to the new non-torture policies, granting terrorists Miranda Rights, and prohibiting troops from firing at insurgents unless fired upon and able to specifically locate the assailant.

    3. The US media was allowed and encouraged to spread rumors about and mud-sling the US military, greatly decreasing support for actions aimed at defeating the terrorists, and destroying the morale of the soldiers in the Middle East.

    4. Slow responses and idiotic decisions not to choose the best possible action in war by the government have resulted in millions of dollars of wasted equipment, food costs for soldiers ordered to wait, and most of all cost the US the lives of some of the finest and most honorable young men and women of these generations, all at the expense of families and taxpayers.

When the war first started, it should have been worth it. But now, terrorists are practically pulled into our own country, and given more rights over US citizens. Its embarrassing how low this country's government can and has stooped.

  5. the war was costly economically, and emotionally with all the soldiers not coming home. i do not think we are safer because of the war, because; although we did maintain our "tough guy" American exterior by jumping into the fray, but 911, the economic cost and the lives the war cost have devastated this country. we've taken major hits and still projected our "bad ass" image, i think our security can only last as long as the memory of our influence. war is never a good thing, but our soldiers jumped to defend this country and its people, however ungrateful they are. their lives were not worth this in my opinion, many are ungrateful of the sacrifices, some ignorant, and some are outright disrespectful, this war was not worth their lives, but those brave men and women of this country gave them anyways.

I don't believe that the war in Iraq was 100% worth everything that America put into it. That being said, I also believe that it has made us a stronger country. We had to come together and support the troops that were putting their lives on the line for us every single day in the Middle East. The terrorists who attacked our country now know that we are a force to be reckoned with. They wanted to attack our country; we retaliated. The billions of dollars spent and countless lives lost were not worth the fight. Have we really helped to reform those Middle Eastern countries enough to say that it was worth all that we lost in this war? With the taliban still strong and in this world, was the war worth the civialian lives lost? There is no right answer to those questions, but however we feel we will all have to live with that for the rest of our lives.

  7. Well I dont really think it was worth it because there was a lot of soldiers out there that lost their lives and we didnt even accomplish our mission out there. And on the other hand i think it was okay to leave the war because that would save a lot of money and most important save a lot of our soldiers lives.

Well sincerely I don’t believe all the sacrifices made were worth it since at the end of it all we didn’t get rid of the root of the problem. I think the US has gotten safer but no t because of the war but because of the extra precautions we all take before doing something risky. Even though the war was not worth it at least the soldiers get to come back now instead of later so I guess better late than never .the one good thing of the war is the it showed that the US will not let anyone harm them without defending itself and standing up for what it believes in.

  9. I've never understood why we went into Iran or Iraq. Al-Quiada is in Afghanistan and that is where, I believe, the terrorists are based. We should be sending our troops to fight the people that caused 911. I don't mind that the troops were pulled from Iraq because now they can be sent into Afghanistan to help find Osama Bin Laden and the rest of the people from Al-Quiada that are trying to hurt all of the other countries.

  10. I believe that in retrospect, the Iraq war was a mistake. At the time, it seemed necessary and easy, but we all learned that in war, no one wins. One of the reasons the war seems so terrible to so many people is that politicians and the media used it to try and push their own political agendas, in the process dividing our own country and hurting the image of our presidents and our armed forces. The same thing happened in the Vietnam War. The Viet Cong did not beat us; we beat ourselves.

  11. I think that going to war in Iraq was not necessary because we did not have to be there. Therefore, lives were not worth loosing. A lot of money was spent that we need for our economy that could have went to something else like schools. I do support the war, i just don't like the idea of getting involved in it.

  13. I do not believe the war was pointless to an extent. The cause and reason to go to war makes sense but what doesn't is the excess time and effort they put into it. It was pointless to stay as long as we did and to spend that much money, resources, and lives there.

I don't think the war was worth the 7 years we've been fighting for. I guess you could say it was the right thing to do at the time it started, but it hasn't gotten us anywhere. Yeah we may have killed more people than Iraq did, but does that mean we won? I don't think so. Look at our economy now! It's going down hill and it doesn't seem like it's going to stop anytime soon. All the US has gained from the war is about 30,000 more wounded men and women, about 4,400 grave sites for US soldiers, and a damaged economy. People may say that we would have been under attack if we didn't go into war, but you can also say our economy wouldn't be so bad if we didn't enter the war. We could have spent all the money on war on helping businesses or schools get through tough times. I am glad to see all of our soldiers come home though and I am very appreciative towards them. As for the war though, i wish it never happened.

  16. I believe this war was worth fighting for altough i do regret the fact that it has put the men and women fighting for our freedom and our protection of everything we hold dear to us. That is one of the negatvie worse side effects of this war. Honestly i think the war has taught iraq that we will go after them if they try this again. we have in fact gotten more secure the security at all the airports have been drastically improved. I honestly think that we are safe i just wish our families didnt have to be sacrificed for this but it has to be done i am thankful that they are all brave enough to fight for what they believe in.

  17. The war was sort of necessary in the sense that if the U.S. troops didn't go into Iraq they would probably still be terrorizing America. However I don't think it was all that necessary for that many years although maybe in the future, matters will show us if it was a good decision or not for the U.S.

I think the war in Iraq was definitely worth it. It was a hefty cost, but if we did not retalliate after the attacks, who's to say it wouldn't happen again because we'd have just let it happen? The war brought the country together and now we're more unified...or UNITED. As in United States. It's in our name, we have to maintain it! The personal sacrifices hit home to me because I actually know people fighting to protect our country right now. After this long, and after so many men and women putting their hearts and souls into protecting us, why stop now? Our job isn't done in the Middle East; not by a long shot. Although the war drained billions of dollars, getting attacked and letting it continue to happen would be very costly as well. So I figure, why not stand up for ourselves and fight togther for our country? I don't really think the coountry is secure now, but only because we didn't finish out the fight because of Obama's decision to stop Iraqi combat operations.

  19. I honestly do not know what to think of this announcement. The problem with me and the Iraq war is that I was, and am still, confused of the purpose of the war. Although I am pleased that many of our troops are able to come home safely, it is hard for me to have an opinion on whether the war was a success or failure when it is not clear to me the beginning intentions of the war. Also, it is hard to say that the war is offically "over" since we still have troops present in the country. It seems that this is Obama's first step to the end of the war but I feel a lot more needs to be done before we can say the war is finished.

I think that the war was not worth the cost that we had to pay, emotionally. I agree with Danielle in saying that we had to show that we weren't going to take the attacks lying down and that we weren't going to let it happen again. Did we need to sacrifice thousands of lives in the process? No. Personally I am against the war. We didn't need to stay there as long as we did.

  21. i think the war in Iraq was not worth the american lifes lost or the money lost. to those who lost a son, husband, daughter, mother ect. the war was not worth tha single life and i agree. the war to me seemed to be after oil as rumors said was bush intention. his family was in the oil business and needed cheaper oil. the point of the war was never accomplishe. there was no weapons of mass destruction found. it seems america just wanted revenge for 911. i agree that sudam should be punished sevely(a cruel punishment) but not to the extent of war. We are more secure to the point of paranoia, but better safe than sorry. this war is in a way sort os like vietnam. there is no winner according to us history, it was a draw but we all know we got our butt's kicked. the war in Iraq in my point accomplishe nothing useful. all it did was lose inocent life, waste money and down turn the economy. i mean look at it now. its in the toilet.

  25. Although it may be too early to tell, i dont think the war in Iraq was worth it, at this point. Knowing people who have served both in Iraq and in other places, i think the risk is just too great. If they escaped death or physical harm, many have come back with phsycological problems. I dont think sacrificing human life of hundreds of thousands of Americans is worth it. I think the war has negatively affected most people, whether or not they support it. I know i was personally affected by it. With that being said, i also dont think the cost was worth it. In my mind, we wasted some money, because of the fact that Iraq STILL doesnt have stable democratic government set up. I think we could have "ended" the war a lot earlier than now, and still have the same effect. I can say, however, that it has improved our national security, specifically when traveling. In the end, i just dont think it was worth the lives of our fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters, especially since Iraq isn't fixed, at least not from my viewpoint.

I am glad most troops are leaving and hopefully they will all be out by the end of next year. We seemed to have extended the war not to fight because it was needed but because we had to be involved and even as troops are going to be coming home we will still be involved and there will still be casualties. . We also waisted alot of money to fight in this war. Our country could have ended this war alot sooner and saved some lives and money.

Personally, I am against war. I understand that we need to stand up for ourselves and that in some peoples' eyes in order to protect our country, war may be necessary. However,I don't believe that violence is the answer. So many lives were lost on both sides and the result of this war seems ambiguous. Even though Obama has said the war is over, I don't believe it is truly over. It's not a light-switch that you can turn on and off. I guess we are a little bit safer because the war wasn't fought on U.S. soil. So even though we may be more secure, I don't believe the war over all was worth it. We have a suffering economy and thousands of lives were lost.

i strongly disagree with the war that we've been apart of for 7 years. ya it seemed good at the time when the twin towers went down but did we seriously have to keep it going this long!?? i do believe that once we stop going over there that they will try to attack us again but i still wish that this didnt go on for as long as it has. Sooooo many lives were lost and it was definately not needed. I'm anti war and anti military so i have stronger opinions about all this but my biggest one is why go into something that your not sure you'll make it out alive? i mean im grateful that their fighting for our country but i was only grateful for the first few years and now that its gone for so long i believe its a waste of time, money, and a death wish. We are in a horrible economy right now and i also think that a lot of our money that we've been feeding the military is a strong outcome for it. In my opinion its like we are giving them money to kill when we should be using that money to survive ourselves.

The purpose of this war was to look for weapons of mass destruction, and after all the years of combat no weapons of mass destruction were found. There were to many innocent lives lost in this war. This war was a sign of the weakness and fear that drives people to make irrational dicisions in these types of matters.

I also believe that the safety felt in the U.S.A. hasn't gotten better since the war. Money has been spent in airports to make sure that what happened in 9/11 does not happen again, and yet there have been people that have been able to get pass through the security with objects they shouldn't have. I'm ashamed to admit that if someone asked me to point out Iraq/Afganistan on a map, I wouldn't be able to do it. However, troops were sent out for a reason, either to protect our country from future terrorist attacks, or just because it was the only thing that came to mind in terms of defense and the revenge of the American people. Whatever may be the case, people risked their lives to keep us safe and to have them come home will put a lot of families at ease. People made a choice to go out and fight, they wanted to prove that they could be a hero to someone and protect the country, weather they lived or died, their good deeds will not go unnoticed.

  44. I think the war in Iraq was worth it. A lot of people are ignorant and do not realize how much we have helped that country out. It is going through a rough phase now but will eventually stabalize and we will have an ally in the Middle East against countries such as Iran. War always has cost and many brave and honorable lives were lost. God bless them. People need to understand though that war means having casualities. The moment troops started dying people began popping off like they didn't think there would be tragic deaths. Anyways I believe in the long term, the war will be worth it and history will look more kindly upon it. We have inplemented a demcratic government and destroyed a vile dictatorship which should have been whiped out in the Gulf War. Women will now not be getting shot in coutryards like what occurs in Iran and people will eventually feel more secure. It is up to them to contiue fighting Al Quaeda and put these scum 6 feet under. 51. i do not believe there was a true reason for us to go to war with Iraq, i mean there was no reason for us to go meddle in their business. they dont meddle in ours so why should we get into theirs?
not to make anyone mad or anything, but i do fully support the troops no matter what my point of view is about the wars and armed forces. i have friends that are in the navy military and signed up to go in to the army, so i know what it's like to have the feeling that you may lose someone, whether it be a close friend, relative such as; a dad, mom, brother or sister, or just a family friend. so i fully support all branches of the armed forces.
although, i do not believe we should be going to war with just who ever we think is a good idea. eventhough we have our reasons, sometimes our reasons are not as strong as we think. this war lasted us 5 years, 5 years that many soldiers, men or women, could have spent with their family. to me, i have thought about the reasons why we entered the war and how the people have been effected by it. i believe that even though we want to showeveryone how big and tough we are, sometimes we are better off just keeping our mouths shut and stay out of everyones way. as for the people who have been effected by this war, i believe most of us have to take a step back and really think: do we really want to go through this again? and can we handle to lose this many citizens? or what right do we have being here?, because truth be told they dont need us there; they were doing just fine before we came along so why do they need our help right now?
for me, it was not worth the people or money we have and probably still will lose from this war. it is not right that just because one person or a group of people want to go there and fight for something that is not rightfully theirs that we are sacrificing our people whenit should be them going.

Yes because like many of my fellow classmates have said it was somewhat of a reality check to our country as far as coming together as one; but it was not worth it because many of our soldiers died and we lost millions of dollars due to the cost of the war.

  56. I think there are two different ways to decide if it was worth it or not. Not being in the war, many Americans just hear the deaths and the negativity. This leads them to believe the war isn't worth it. But no one really considers the positives like the fact that we are now more a secure country by showing we can fight immediatley and hold our own ground. In a way no, it wasn't worth all the deaths. But isn't death part of the circle of life and doesn't everyone have their time to die? Who is to say that wasnt their time

We gained nothing from this because we already knew we were more powerful and in the end we suffered many unnecessary deaths of soldiers. We had no reason to stay in the war for 7 years fighting Bush's war. It accomplished nothing and was for nothing.

War isn't worth the problems it causes, it's a waist of time, money & innocent lives. I do believe though that joining the Army, Navy, Marines etc does shape people and put them on the right path for their future. I guess in some way war is the only protection we have. If you really think about it we have people who risk their lives to be on a 24/7 watch on the US in case of any attacks from enemy's. Going back to the war in Iraq: i don't believe that war was worth it at all. We lost more than we gained. War is not the answer to our future safety. War isn't worth any of it.

  68. The short answer: NO. It was definitely not worth it. The main reason being that the war in Iraq was a poor attempt to link it to Osama Bin Laden. Iraq didn't have weapons of mass destruction, and the fact that the U.S. supported Saddam Hussein in the 80's when Iraq was going against the Soviets and Iran kinda makes America appear overly hypocritical. All that time and money could have been spent doing something far more productive, so it's about time the war ended.

I believe that the war was not worth it at all because our counrty stayed the same, it didn't become more secure than what we were before. While the war mostly affected the United States in a negative way, the soldiers that were at war helped people from Iraq, but even then families from both the U.S. and Iraq were separated and many lives lost from innocent people that lived there in Iraq or of those soldiers that gave everything for their country including their lives. The war just brought sorrow and sadness. Even though soldiers decided to defend their nation it didn't make a great difference because our nation gets bad things from other places for example 9/11 when the twin towers were destroyed and thousands of people were killed. I think that being in war or not does not determine our safety, and war was not worth it at all.

I believe that the war wasn't worth it, because of the fact that we haven't made any improvement, and how much sorrow the war has brought into the family's lives who have friends and family members who are in the war, that have been there for years and not came home. Although, it may secure our safety, it isnt worth the time, lives, and money thats been put in towards it.

  88. Do you enjoy the safety of the United States? I sure do. I love knowing that i can go to bed at night and chances are HEAVILY stacked against waking up and finding that thousands of my innocent brother and sister citizens have died as a result of radical Muslim's anger at our so-called fidelity. In that, the war in Iraq was and is a complete success. Our military has done us proud once more; they knocked out and disabled the radical Muslims who would love to march into your household,(or any household for that matter), hold a gun to your head, and shoot you. Thank you American military for going to the Middle east and keeping me and my beloved country safe.
Personally, i dont think we have done enough in Iraq. Neither does the current administration, obviously, since there are still 50,000 armed troops in Iraq who, if attacked, will return the favor without hesitation.
I do think that it has dragged on far longer than was needed, therefore wasting money. This, in my opinion, is due to stupid politicians who think that these muslims have the capacity to negotiate peace, when the fact is all they understand (and deserve for that matter) is a M1903-A4 bullet through the head. Ofcourse, this is all personal opinion. I dont know why our leaders bother bowing to foriegn dignitaries (as Obama did to the Saudi king, of all people, in April of 09. read this if you dont believe me. http://www.wnd.com/?pageId=93696) when they are as powerful or more powerful than those they bow to. It is humiliating and, in that culture, a sign of submission and weakness. The man obama bowed to has probably turned a blind eye to any radical terrorist training camps in his own nation.
Basically, i believe the troops absolutely belonged in Iraq killing those who want with every fiber of their being to end as many American lives as possible. Besides, we did those radicals a favor killing them. After all, they believe that they will go to an afterlife where they believe they recieve 72 virgins for dieing for their god. The following is a passage proclaiming that muslims should strike down an unbeliever:

“Slay the idolators [non-Muslims] wherever ye find them, and take them captive, and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush. Fight against such of those who have been given the Scripture as believe not in Allah nor the last Day…. Go forth, light-armed and heavy-armed, and strive with your wealth and your lives in the way of Allah! (Sura 9:5,29,41).

This is what the radicals in the Middle East have been acting on. It is their religion that drives them to kill American lives. They believe Allah (their god) has blessed them and their nation for doing so. Doesnt look like that has worked for them too well... seems like America's Christian God, in my opinion the one true God, has blessed America though, considering we have thus far destroyed all muslims in our path (that is, when politicians allow us to).
Soldiers, keep on soldiering. God Bless America!

However the improvement and progression that we have had so far has been said to be beneficiary towards the safety of our people & the Iraqi territory. There was a sense of security gained throughout this whole process. knowing that we went in their with a specific goal, & wasn't going to leave until that goal was met. The war was not worth it because what could have been a shorter war, turned into a longer war. Every extra year spent was more money and more lives wasted in this war. Yes, you have to be grateful that soldiers rose up and defended the U.S., but wouldn't less casualties have been better than the casualties now if the war had been efficient? Also since the terrorists are being treated like U.S. citizens, you could compare the soldiers in the war to police officers, in the way that the soldiers now have less autority against terrorists that can easily kill these soldiers.

The Middle East may need help in establishing a stable government and whatnot but that doesn't mean we can neglect our own needs. I'm all for helping others but sometimes we do need to look at our self-interests first and foremost. Bauer/Sloan

  116. In many ways I believe the Iraq war was worth it and not worth it. Many American lives were lost that did not need to be lost. The beginning of the war can be justified because we had to defend our country because of the attacks made towards it. But I do not believe we should've stayed as long as we did risking more American lives to help a country that did not want our help. honestly, I do not know how I feel about how the war has effected our national security but in my personal situation I feel extremy safe in my country because of the soldiers that do everything to protect it, as well as protect us.

I beleive that the war was worth it. No soldier ever wants to come back and hear that there efforts over there were a waist of time. i think that we helped iraq set up a democratic form of government instead of there terrible dictatorships. im proud of are soldiers and respet there efforts in iraq. they give this nation are freedom and to them that will always be worth it i think.

  120. People of this country had their own reason for going into this war. They knew, as a basis agreement, that their country needed help. That they knew how to do SOMETHING, in SOMEWAY, to do what they felt was right for their country. Truly it is not in our own decisions on whether it was right. Sure there was a lot of money used, sure families went without loved one, but so many miss the basic fact. A true soldier is a person who believes that whether or not a decision to fight is wrong, it is in their power to do understand that fighting for what they believe in is most important. So many people look at this topic like "OMG no our oil supplies, ugh too many high prices for gas" or whatever it is, and you know what. OUR soldiers were the ones to go over there. OUR soldiers were the ones to fight for us. So OUR soldiers should feel whether or not this war was worth it. And if our proud and noble soldiers believe it true to save our country by fighting over seas, then yes, i too believe that it was worth it. They lived for their country, they fought for their country, and unfortunately many died for their country. But it is for THEIR country, and for THEIR families that they did if for. And they all knew it.

  122. Do I believe that this war was worth it? Of course not. We lost too many compared to what was actually accomplished. We also wasted a lot of money that could have been used for more important things. 123. In my perspective, and maybe I just haven't followed the war closely enough, but it has not been run by me what significant issue we were fighting for or against. It wasn't like past wars where EVERYONE has known that it was for freedom or some other thing. Although, even though I am unaware of the actual topic of the fighting, I am well familiarized with the numbers of men that we have lost there. Putting two and two together, I don't think the war was worth it as we lost so many lives for something that didn't bear a high level of significance.

okay, well to start i am higly against all wars in general! i was living for 2 years wondering if ill ever get news from my brother again. watching news, seeing soldiers missing and getting their lives taken away is a punch to the gut. but thank God that one day we found him face to face with us in our front yard. he became one proud/brave veteran.i give a big round of a plause to President Obama for saying that the war our with iraq is over. they will send troops that havent seen their loved ones in a long time back home. i see that some will stay to practice their war tactics in iraq.
if the war is over let it be over all soldiers shall come back home all! im pretty sure iraq has had enough of us. i personally think the soldiers in iraq did a great job trying to clear up the situation in iraq. no i dont think that the lives lost in iraq were worth it but there is a reason why President Obama is saying the war is over. there is many things we dont know and probaly we will not ever know what actually happened at war but all we got to do is give thanks to those who lost their lives in battle and those who fought for us and are still here for us today and will always be our protectors of our daily living. Military people losing their lives is always going to be a part of war, this is the worst part of wars. As a country we are more secure because of all the things we do now for getting on a plane, etc. Hopefully we have made a difference in the war on terror and in the lives of the people of Iraq who deserve a better life.

  131. There are defiantly pro’s and con’s about this war. The pro’s are that we changed the Iraqi government from a dictatorship to a democracy, something that’s a little more in our favor. Sure, we’re the world police, but I think that helping the country out was good. Though, here comes the con’s. We spent waaay too much money on this war. Money we didn’t and don’t have might I add. Money that could have been used to help out Katrina victims or other things that our country was and is in need of. Not only that, there were many American lives lost. Now is this all worth it? I’m torn. A big part of me says no because the thought of war displeases me. But then again, who’s to say that if we hadn’t shown our tough side like we always do that the Iraqi’s wouldn’t have done what we thought they might? Or anyone country or group of people in general? There isn’t much we can do about our decisions of the past now, so I don’t dwell on it. So I still don’t know exactly what to think.

  132. I personally don’t understand why we are at war in the first place. The government did, however, spend a lot of money to have men and women fight in a war that didn’t even accomplish anything, just a waste of money that could have been used for other things. A lot of lives were also lost for no reason.

  133. Was it worth it? We removed a dictator who was hated by his people, we prevented further terrorists attack on us, and in truth the entire world. We brought the fight to a people bent on death and destruction, our death and destruction. Many people living in that area are thankful for our presence.

yes, it was worth it, but then who cares? In the end it does not matter if it was worth it, even if it was not worth it, we would still have to fight, for we had no other reasonable choice. The only other choice we had was to give in to terrorism and die.

I honestly believe this was, as are many wars, a waste of time, money, resources, energy, and lives. Innocent people were killed for nothing. Families in both countries will forever be mouring the loss of loved ones. People will forever be suffering the negative effects of this war. Even U.S. soldiers were exploiting human beings for their own entertainment, and we call these people heroes? No one, absolutely no one benefited from this bloodshed.

  140. Whenever I think about the war in Iraq, I feel sad. I feel as though it was an unnecessary venture, brought about by the thirst for revenge. It was not worth it. We found no weapons of mass destruction, we destroyed a country's government, however corrupt it was, and we murdered thousands of innocent people, albeit some guilty ones as well. Though I believe our politicians genuinely believed that this would solve the American hurt, I do not think this was the correct course of action. We sacrificed honorable young men and women, poured thousands of dollars into a country our general population seems to despise, and ruined our own economic system. The devastation will take years to correct, and I fear that we'll never be the same. We are no more secure today than we were before 2001, and there is really no way to prevent the same types of attacks. Waging wars will not protect American citizens; general peace will. As long as there are wars being waged, there will be terror, and there will be death. The only way to stop the vicious cycle is to use democracy and benevolence. However, as long as we strive to be the best, our direct competitors and less-than-advanced onlookers will not cease in their quest to best America. That human nature of competition and envy will be the death of us. While people try to be better, wars will be fought and people will die. As a pacifist, I firmly believe that all war, retaliation, and revenge will just lead to hurting everyone involved. Gandhi had it right: "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind."

  143. I don't know if there is any way to accurately weigh everything that went into and came out of the war in Iraq. While I do feel that the consequences of the war were terrible and I was never really a supporter of the idea of the war, I am still able to see the other side. We the US seemed to feel that we were threatened enough to need to do something about it, and after 9/11, people were screaming for action. The costs of the war and an unsatisfying ending are not what everyone hoped for, though. I just hope that in years to come, we as a country will be able to justify our actions and see a positive change in Iraq and say, "We were part of that change."

  144. I agree with Kassie that we can't accurately weigh everything. All things considered we could have lost many more lives but the fact that we didn't even know what we were fighting for was over the top. It's the rotten old politicians that can declare a war but it is the young that must perish on their behalf. We also added an insane amount of fuel to the national debt to fund weapons technology that wasn't even necessary. So my answer is NO this war was entirely unjustified and definitely not worth it.

As I recall, we initially went to war to "find weapons of mass destruction". To this day we have yet to find such weapons. Throughout the coarse of that war there were other explanations and reasons given as to why we were still there. None of which do I feel were truly justifiable. Therefor the war was not at all worth the time, money, and most of all the lives wasted on it.

i dont think war was worth it.At the time, it seemed necessary and easy, but we all learned that in war, no one wins.

I really disprove about the whole war in Iraq and the many solders that have gone and either died, was wounded severely, or had committed suicide when they came back to their families because they could not take all the nightmares that had occurred and they had seen. It’s just not fair to watch family members have so much pain inside and watch them cry because of a loved one that had died and I don’t think its helping really when you have many people go to fight but then I have great respect for those people because they are fighting to keep our country and the citizens who are living in it safe.

For starters, Bush and Obama dropped the ball supposedly from their action. I don't fully blame them except for Obama. If it was not for corporations and the media calling the shots, then he wold be just stupid and week. No presidential power bows down or hugs other world leaders.
