Is Big Brother Here? (Post #5)

Student GPS tracking is being considered by New Cannaan High in Connecticut. A story onABC News (see below) discusses the possibility of following students at school and everywhere else they go on their daily routine. The school district uses GPS tracking to follow the progress of school busses on their routes in the morning and afternoon and now the company that provides that service is offering to use the same technology to track individual students 24 hours a day. How would you feel if your school district had this technology? Would this impinge on your right to privacy? is it necessary for the school to know your every move? Is this an example of "helicopter" education like "helicopter" parenting? Helicopter parenting refers to parents who constantly hover over their children. In what way might this benefit the school? Can see any reason would a school have for implementing this policy? Might this be a help to students parents?

I believe that having a GPS tracking system that is monitered by a school attached to students is both a violation of the student's rights and acceptable for the high school. It is not acceptable for the school to be able to track students whereabouts at any time except during school hours. The only exception I can see having to this rule, is if the students happen to be on campus at a time when school is not in session. The GPS device would automatically active itself when the student gets on campus grounds. A major problem I could see a school having if it decided to implement something like this is that many students do not carry their ID card everywhere with them. There are students like me who keep it in their wallet all the time so it is always accessible, and there are students who lose it within a week of receiving it and never bother to replace it. The GPS tracking system would infringe on the rights of the students because the school administration does not need to know if you are at your aunt's house, a friend's house, or even grocery shopping. The only people who have a right to know where you are at all times are your legal guardians.

  2. Student GPS tracking?! for what?! This concept is definently a violation of rights to any citizen living in the U.S. I do not believe the school has a right to infringe on a student's private life. I don't see any benefits that a school can pull out of having a tracking system attatched to their students. If a parent approves and the student does also then that is acceptable but not if they do it secretly.

  4. A student GPS tracking device is the craziest thing i have heard! I believe that this would violate a student's privacy in all aspects. The GPS is a good idea for the bus system, but not for the students. A school may belive that having this system might be able to help with students who may cut class, but not every student in high school does that. The parents might think it is a useful device, but certainly their children will view it as a violation. some students wouild probably not even carry it with them at all. I know that I would not agree at all with a system like that one.

  5. Really tracking devices. why would you need to know where a student is at. It is stupid. How would they feel if they were being watch all day and all night. People have the right for privacy and not to be watched

  6. The attempt to track a student's every move is definitely a violation of privacy. While one can argue that it would help protect students in emergency situations or monitor their behavior (such as going off-campus during school hours), I think that it is a step in the wrong direction. What is next? Video cameras everywhere we go? The government has an obligation to protect our rights as citizens, but not to the extent where they are invading our privacy and liberty to protect us.

I think student GPS tracking systems are a complete violation of privacy to students. I understand thet want to know where their students are during school hours, but come on. Put a camera by the parking lot exit or something if they want to know who's ditching during school hours. I could see it being useful to see who is leaving, but I don't think that's the way to go about it. The only people who should be able to install a GPS tracker on a child's car are their legal guardian(s). If the school passed this and really did it, I think it is going to do them a lot more harm than good.

  8. I think the idea of a school tracking their students whereabouts is awfully creepy. Schools have a right to know where we students are when the schools themselves are liable for our safety, but they shouldn't have the right to know our locations when we're off campus. It's absolutely unnecessary for the school to know our every location when we don't need to be on campus. A school may implement the technology to help parents find us at any time of day, but that doesn't seem right to me. It should be our parents' responsibility to find us, not our school's.

  10. this to me is considered an invasion of privacy. It may be useful to a certain extent, but it is no business of the school to know where and what a student is doing after school hours. They can set up more cameras and other ways to watch the students while they are at school then to place a tracking device in a students id card. If the school district did decide to go ahead with the tracking system, the students could just leave their id cards at home and therefore the school would not know where they are. Sloan p.3

  11. To put a GPS tracking system is definately an invasion of privacy. It is good that parents know where their students are, however i do not think that the school needs the right to have that access to see where a student is at any given time. Schools don't need to know where i am because i am reserved that right to privacy. If this passes this will the beginning of an alternate version of "1984".

  12. i think that the only invasion of privacy here is if we were monitored out of school. it's our legal guardians job to monitor our whereabouts outside of school or any other place that we are placed in the care of. whilst we are at school, i think the GPS is a great idea, it keeps students from getting away with getting off campus, but the downside is, you would get massive complaints from students, some parents, and plus it would cost a pretty penny to do this. it is a good idea in theory, but seems too costly for the time monitored (school hours). and if monitoring goes after school hours i believe it's a little extreme for anyone besides your guardians to have that power, plus it could be abused by, say, a pedophile working at the school looking to catch a girl/boy at their homes alone v.i.a. a facebook update and then using the GPS system. in my opinion, too costly, invasion of privacy if beyond school hours, and could be easily abused.

There may be some good points to having a GPS system such as tracking which students are where when a certain situation takes place, but other than that it's a violation of privacy. GPS tracking?! What are people thinking now a days. This is definately invading our right of privacy! I do not think it is right for the school to follow a student's every move. It's different if their parents know where their children are at all times. I don't think this would benefit the school in any way because every student would be angry at this policy. Also, i do not think people would transfer to this school if they were moving here. It may help students' parents, but I also think it would make some of them mad too. I think some parents wouldn't want their children to basically be stalked at school. Outside of class is supposed to be a time of freedom and relaxation. With a GPS following a student at all times would cause students to be stressed throughout their whole day. They would be hesitant on every move they made and they wouldn't have any fun anymore. I think the idea of student GPS is absolutely ridiculous!

  17. I TOTALLY disagree with the 24 hours of watching students. The school does not need to know what the students are doing 24/7. That is just plain invading privacy. I don;t mind if they had it on buses or some places at school. But there is no way I will let them track me with a GPS all day that is stupid. I completely disagree with that school that did that.

  18. This definately sounds like the start of a world with Big Brother. Remembering the book 1984, I would say that being constantly monitered and, to a degree, controlled is not in the best interests of the citizens. Knowing where a student is during school hours could have its benefits. However, if schools have this technology of simply tracking students, would the teachers get lazy and rely on this system? Also, at a highschool age, students are making choices that are going to determine their character most likely for the rest of their lives. Always looking over your shoulder and making the right decisions because you have to is not going to build good strong characters. Making the right choice on your own is more beneficial in character building than always doing what you are told. Your parents and school can't protect and shelter you forever, and its high time that they stopped trying to. Guidance is good, but we don't want Big Brother to have control over us.

  19. Student GPS Tracking is, without a doubt,a violation of privacy and a big brother concept. Parents should trust that their children will tell them the truth of where they are going, and if this happens not to be true it is because they are not good parents. There are students who go out just to do trouble, but they have parents who wouldn't care where they were at anyway.

I don't like the idea of a student GPS tracking system, but this dicision should be left up to the parents who think that they need such technology.

  21. I personally see no reasonable explanation for using such a device. I dont believe the school has any business in knowing where a student is at all times. My personal life is for me to know, and NOT for the school to find out. It is a complete invasion of privacy, even during school hours. Having the school, or even parents hover over your every move is ridiculous. High school students should be trusted to use their own judgement in decision making, and suffer the consequences for bad choices. I dont believe a GPS tracking device would stop teens from leaving campus during school hours. I can see it making them want to leave even more. With budget cuts, i dont see this being a useful way to spend money, especially if there is a way to loose or break the GPS device. If i was subjected to this sort of big brother technology, i would not attend the school, and would find an alternative school. If my parents don't even use this kind of control over me, i for sure would not allow the school to do it. I dont believe it is fair, especially to those who have done nothing to deserve it.

I know for sure i wouldn't be going to that school. But obviously it would be violating students' privacy. I mean I get that the school wants to know where the kids are during school, but as far as 24 hours a day that's just too much. Like the parent in the video said, it is the parents business to know where their kid is and the school's business only to an extent. That extent of course being when the student is at school, but ONLY then.

Let me start off saying: as a student, I disagree with tracking students throughout the school day!!!! Its a violation of privacy and it would be bothersome.

But if you look at the other side of the argument, the administration isn't asking too much. If the students are doing what they are supposed to during the day, this wouldn't affect them. However, the GPS would only bother the kids who ditch class or cause problems at school. Imagine if a fire alarm is pulled in the hallway. The school would be able to know which children were around that area when the alarm was pulled and be able to figure out who did it. The scvhool wouldn't hover around the individual student unless they are suspect for something that happened around school.

GPS tracking on a person goes more under the lines as having a 24 hour stalker! It's a highschool student. Like really, what could they be doing that is so important to the government?? If your kid doesn't go to school I see that as being an issue for the parents, not someone who doesn't even know the kid. To have this tracking system would just be crossing the line among privacy terms.

Student tracking would be a violation of the students' rights. I understand why a school would want to know where the students are and if they are actually at school to prevent them from ditching. However, isn't that the point of taking attendance and putting it on Power School? I also understand that parents have the right to know where their students are, but again, they have access to Power School where they can view that information. Having to wear a GPS device for 24 hours a day is unneccessary and unfair.

  29. I do not think that this GPS tracking system would be a good idea to put in a high school. The students deserve their right to privacy. Once a teenager hits high school, they are slowly becoming more independent & a school needs to respect that. The only situation that I could see a tracking device being positive for is if the school had an emergency, such as a fire or an intruder on campus. Using the tracking device in that situation could benefit a child's safety. Other than that, however, all I could see coming from the system is bad reactions & complaining from students & parents. It would seem to be just a mess of trouble.

  30. GPS trackers on students would be an invasion of privacy. Our sue happy society has placed pressure on schools to protect students every second of the school day and even before and after school hours. However, being a babysitter is not a role that schools can afford to play due to a lack of financial and human resources. Moreover, being a 24/7 body guard is not a role that school's should feel the need to play because at some point, individuals need to learn to take at least partial responsibility for their own actions and well being and not depend entirely on someone else to keep them safe and happy.

It may be a plus to the parents because then they'd have the ability to track us when needed but other than that, that's a major invasion of our privacy and should not be taken into action period. Everyone has a right to their privacy and it isn't necessary for schools/parents to know a persons every move, espically since most of these students are reaching the legal age of an adult. If parents want to get a hold of their child, they either supervise the event or should provide the child with a cell phone, its as simple as that. However, I do believe that younger students, maybe ages 6-9, should be tracked... It may put the parents at ease and if anything ever happened, the child would be quickly located.

To make sure kids are in school? And how would that even work anyway? You can't force someone to wear that. If I was told I had to wear that I would switch schools or go into homeschooling because they don't need to know what a student is doing outside of school! It's none of their business.

I do not see a valid reason at all why a school would need to track a student after school hours. Nor can I think of a particular emergency situation that would involve the school having to locate a student via GPS. I believe this is an absolute invasion of privacy and it is completely uncalled for. Not only is it uncalled for, but it is way too far and a waste of time and money. It is a parents job to know where their child is and the childs job to make sure theor parent knows where they are. It is not a school districts job to spy on a child. That efforts can be much more appreciated if directed somewhere else such as towards our education funding.

The right for someone to do what they wish during the day is as simple as just getting up in the morning. Tracking a student to make sure "they behave" or something is wrong. Everyone makes mistakes, how are we to learn from them if we are not able to make them or are followed to make sure that they never happen. What kind of life is it when a students sits on the couch going "Ok, now what is mom going to worry that ill do next" Its silly, and i believe that there is a major privacy violation.

It infringes upon personal rights and freedoms, and it's not gonna stop people from going somewhere else anyways. It's the same as having a computer teacher watching everyone's monitors. Some students will still break the rules, even under surveillance. Maybe on buses it could be useful, since it is their job to go to certain destinations, and it could be a little more helpful than just a checklist that the driver checks off. However, when applied to students, it seems ultimately redundant and useless, since students will most likely pay no mind to it and break rules or ditch anyways.

I believe that the tracking device would be more useful for children from 4 to 8, who could wander off the playground, and be hit by a car. You want us to act like adults, well, then start treating us like one's and that includes the responsibilty of being where we need to be.

And they have every right not to be. The school is always throwing a fit about how much of a student's day falls under their liability. Hence why we cannot have off campus lunch or how once a student closes their front door to "leave for school" and until they "touch their door knob" the school system is supposedly still responsible. So, wouldn't by tracking a student, that make a school even more liable and responsible 24/7. Only the legal gaurdians of the student should know where their child is. Tracking students would benefit the school because it could probably help diminish the amount of students that skip class. First of all, why would they even consider using GPS trackers, when that involves spending alot of money that schools dont have?! We cant afford to buy paper, but we can get GPS trackers?? I think having trackers would be a bad idea because then it would be completely violating the students privacy. ONE good thing about it would be if someone was to be kidnapped, they could easily be found.

  137. having gps tracking applied to studets on a 24 hour basis is completley infringing on their privacy. the school has a right to know where a student is when on school grounds, but not on their personal time. it is the responsibility of the parent to know the whereabouts of their child and that is absolutley none of the school's business. according to the video the "pro-gps guy" says the student would have a card that acts as a gps monitering device. this seems illogical to me, honestly, i dont even remember to bring my license with me everyday, how would students be expected to have this card with them at all times? basically, this idea is not very good and i believe it will be rejected by the student body a well as their parents.

In my opinion having a GPS tracker on a student 24/7 in order to fully monitor his or hers whereabouts is both an invasion of privacy and a violation of natural rights. The school does however have the right to observe and mandate our well being on school grounds, but when it comes to life after school, it's completely unacceptable. It's costly also. Spending money on such a ridiculous thing isn't fair to those who care about their learnings in school. Why waste money we already don't have, for something that goes against a persons privacy and well being. So basically this whole idea of having students monitored and or tracked is just plain stupid. Simple as that.

  145. I theink the idea of a student GPS tracking system is ridiculous. No school or parent should have the right to violate a persons privacy this way.Parents should trust there kids and school should not have that much knollage into a students live. It's a waist of time and money because students will find a way around it, simple as that. Tracking any persons live is stupid, and its against human rights. People should have a right to their own privacy.

  148. I honestly think that this issue is not one to stress too badly over. In my opinion, it would not matter to me if my school did this. I believe the school following me during school time is justified as that is when they are responsible for me. I could see this coming in handy if we have an unidentified, armed person on campus and the administration was trying to make sure all the kids were safe. Instead of risking their own life by going out and checking the bathrooms to see if anyone was still in there, admin. could simply just go on line/on a computer or whatever to see everyone's locations while still being able to stay within safety. If the school was to keep our tracker "on" after school hours, I would want to know what their intent would be. But I really don't think that it would be too big of a deal anyways as long as they don't start calling us and bugging us about wherever we are. Unless our locations are recorded by a computer, I don't see administration wasting their weekends and after school hours sitting in front of a computer watching us move around. I believe this action would only occur during schooltime which is fine by me. To conclude, if our school was to do this, I would not be one to be bothered.

For the school to have this ability is wrong. What makes the school think it has any place to dictate what any student does after school hours? If the parents want to do this i do not care however. What a minor is doing with their time is their parents concern and not the schools.

If the school district uses these devices to help students by keeping them safe or keeping them in school by catching truant kids, then I believe it can be very helpful. This might be considered infringement on our privacy, but the only students who would be worried about this would be the ones who have something to hide. Even though I don't mind this device, it is definitely a form of helicopter education. I think these devices should only be active during school hours, because the school district should have no need or interest to know where we are when school is out.

I think that student GPS durring school hours is alright. The Admin of the school wants to know where students are all the time becuse they are liable for there actions. This is just one step passted taking role in every class. i think the trackign should start at 8am and end at 3pm. the device should be apart of your Student Body Card and that must be use in many ways. one was to use it is that you need to have your card to check into class and you also need it to buy your lunch. i belive if you give the students a reason to ahve a Student ID card they will use it.

A GPS tracking device has pros and cons. Pros would be putting it on kids who are always getting into trouble for such things as skipping school, gangs, and drugs. There would need to be some type of system for them to get a GPS once they have gotten into trouble so many times.
Cons would be putting them on all kids no matter what the kid is like.
The good kids should not be punished with a GPS if there is no reason for it.

Honestly! The only kids who would even need to be considered to use one of these would be problem kids who skip school. And if these children are being truant, it is the student and the parent's fault, not the school and the government. The school can only do so much. It would not be beneficial for anyone to use these GPS devices.

It is not only a complete violation of student privacy but the schools shouldn't spend so much time and money trying to be a parent and focus on learning. A huge amount of teachers and classes are getting cut around the nation because of low budgets and schools began to spend on such stupid form of security? The school tracking a person's every move through GPS is wrong and a violation of privacy. I don't believe in technology being used like this today, because I feel that we are moving more and more into a world were you are under 24/7 watch. People including government can track what you eat, what you are watching, what you say on the phone, what you look up on the web, your work habits, your education and so on. The point is, that I don't like it. I understand that the government can do some of this for a good reason, but this power is not suppose to be in school. I recommend spending money on something useful for once. Who cares if a student or two go missing from time to time, the world will move on.

Well I think that this isn't right because this would take each individuals privacy and it would be weird to know that you are being tracked on your every move 24 hours. This would help so that the parents will know were their son or daughters are at, but that would make students life miserable because they would not be able to be going around were they want confortable due to them knowing that they are being tracked so i dissagree with this and yea this could be "helicopter" term because it is like if somebody is stocking you. It would benefit the school because than it would tell them if you are geting into trouble or not nd parents as well, but still think that this is wrong.
