Wal-Mart Good for Galt? (#9; due Wednesday)

A Sacramento Superior Court (using judicial review) recently ruled that the city of Galt can continue to move forward with the construction of a 133,000 square foot Wal-Mart. The court
ruled that the environmental documents necessary for such a project do not need to be revisited. There still are other hurdles the company and city need to overcome before Wal-Mart becomes official but estimates now put ground breaking sometime around spring 2012.

Naturally, there are many trade-offs and opportunity costs associated with the establishment of a Wal-Mart in Galt. How will it impact pollution, traffic and property values? Will other local businesses suffer? Will the tax revenue that Wal-Mart brings in be worth the costs? How many jobs will this create and will they be good jobs?

On another level, we see the role of local government: our federal system allows for local decisions to be made by local governments, in this case the Galt City Council. Is the Council making a wise decision?

What are your thoughts on the very real possibility that Wal-Mart may soon be part of the Galt scene?

  1. Having Walmart in Galt will bring in lots of tax revenue and also employ lots of people. Currently, Galt does not sell many goods that people in Galt need, and so people travel outside of Galt to spend their money. If these goods were available to people at our own local Walmart, we could keep the money in our city and it could go towards schools and parks, which are nice :)

  2. I believe that having a Wal Mart will bring alot of jobs to the city. This will also make galt a more convient place to live at. I agree with Hailey we should really keep the money in our towns so that it could go towards our schools and parks so galt can also be a better place.I think having a Wal Mart is a great idea.

  3. TRUTH. I THINK THAT WAL-MART WILL CREATE GOOD JOBS BECAUSE REAL TALK GALT IS GROWING AND EXPANDING. IT MAY HURT OTHER STORES NEAR IT BECAUSE INSTEAD OF SHOPPING THERE THEY DECIDE TO GO TO WAL-MART.I THINK IT MAY BE A REASON TO MOVE TO GALT ALSO BECAUSE ITS LITTLE BUT IT HAS BIG STORES. IS THIS A SIGN THAT GALT WILL CONTINUE TO GROW? PERSONALLY I LOVE WALMART ITS CHEAP AND YOU CAN FIND PRACTICALLY EVERYTHING SO ITS CONVINIENT. I WOULD LIKE A WAL-MART IN GALT.

i am sort of split on the decision. i think walmart will bring more jobs for the people here which is good. i also think that walmart's cheap prices is a huge benefit for us. it is also a good idea because everyone coming from other cities are paying the city of galt with their taxes of things they buy. here are the bad things that walmart brings though. now that walmart will be in galt, the twin cities side is going to be packed. it is going to take even longer to get over the overpass on that side. also, the other stores around walmart will decline in production because of the low prices at walmart. so there are good and bad things that walmart brings with it in my opinion.

  5. To be honest, I always think it's kind of silly when people say that a Walmart in Galt will hurt local business. I would like to ask, What business? What does Walmart sell that Mom and Pop stores in Galt sell? Clothes? Nope, there are no clothing stores in Galt other than a couple of thrift stores, but if you want something new, you have to go to Elk Grove. Books? Nope, there are no book stores in Galt. Go to Elk Grove. Thinking on it, the only non chain stores I think even exist in Galt are the thrift stores, some confection shops, food joints, and other things that are more specialty. So, for example, the choclate shop that recently opened in Galt: if you normally bought chocolate from that shop and a Walmart moved in, would you start buying Chocolate at Walmart instead? No. If price and convenience were so important to you, you wouldn't be shopping at the chocolate shop anyway, your business for chocolate would be at Raleys or SafeWay, buying packaged chocolates. You're going there because you like fresh hand made chocolates. Walmart isn't going to change that.
So, while I really hate even walking into Walmart, I am not opposed to one in Galt, as it will bring in more jobs and keep money in town.

  6. Walmart would be great for the community in many ways. It would create many jobs for Galtonians and make it convenient to buy goods. The tax revenue that walmart would put out will be good as the money would circulate the community and, ultimately, help the economy out.

  7. I've actually stopped shopping at Wal-Mart for the most part and prefer Target for all my shopping needs, but I think that a Wal-Mart in Galt could benefit a lot of people. Wal-Mart offers a lot of items that are not sold in Galt, and a lot of jobs which is always a good thing. It's about time we have a store like Wal-Mart because all Galt has to really offer is fast food. The only thing I have a problem with is the location of the Wal-Mart. I heard a while ago that they may put it on Twin Cities. That would really bother me. It's hard enough to get through traffic on Twin Cities in the morning and during rush hour, let alone if there were a Wal-Mart there competing with Raleys. I like the idea of a Wal-Mart, but I really hope they choose a better location for the people that live on or near Twin Cities and want to maintain a less hectic place to live. Bauer/ Sloan

  9. I do not wish that a Walmart was in Galt, I personally prefer Target much more. Yes a Walmart would create jobs and offer a variety of items that are not currently available. However, a Walmart would hurt business for stores such as Raley's and small stores in Galt. This would bring more people to Galt and Galt will no longer be considered the small town that it is today and has been. I hope the City council chooses not to allow Walmart to be built. Sloan p.3

I think there are pros and cons of Wal- Mart coming to town. Yes there will be more jobs and better tax revenue. But there will be more traffic than there already is. I think local businesses, like Savemart or RiteAid or Raley's, would suffer. I don't think we need a Wal- Mart. There is one 20 minutes away in elk grove and lodi. Why would people from lodi or elk grove come to galt if they have a Wal- Mart a mile away?

I believe that wallmart can and will bring in a lot of dead end jobs that would be perfect for a teenager, but will be probably filled with middle age to older age people. I would love a wallmart to be right down the street from me, because this is Galt, enough said. Although I would like one to be put in, I can see and understand what walmarts do to community's. They bring the end to all mom and pop shops, and galt is filled with them. They will make galt into a commercialism area that will have people buying walmart brand items. It just generally could sink most of what galt already is.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I really think that walmart shouldn't be in Galt. It's a fairly small town and for a big store like walmart to be here could make the town overcrowded. Yeah its good for people to get employed but it will also leave other small businesses without any customers. I think the City council is making a wrong move and should just save the money for something else.

  15. Walmart would be perfectly fine for galt, but look ugly. I am not one for the poor aesthetics of box stores such as walmart. I would much rather there be a better looking shoping mall there than a walmart. But oh well. It will lend more jobs for the community and bring in some revenue for parks and the city i general, so this walmart is a great idea.

  17. Walmart would create a lot of jobs in Galt, which is crucial since Galt has an unemployment rate that is much higher than Elk Grove or Sacramento. It would be convenient to not have to drive to Lodi or Elk Grove to do shopping as well, even though many people might still shop in Lodi or Elk Grove. However, the new mega store would definitely hurt the local businesses and shopping centers that already exist in Galt such as Savemart and Raley's, and it might even push them away. I think overall it is bad for Galt, because our town does not need another business focused on retail and consumption. Galt has plenty of stores. A better source of jobs and revenue would be a business that produces goods and sells them to communities other than Galt, so that existing stores would not be hurt and the new business would not be dependent solely on demand from people in Galt, as a Walmart would.

To be honest, I really hate Walmart so I, personally, hate that one is going to be built in Galt. That being said, it could be beneficial to the town. Many more jobs will be created and if they use newer models of machines they might need, pollution shouldn't be a huge problem. However, I live somewhat close to Twin Cities, near the plot of land the Walmart is supposed to be built on...I'm not looking forward to the new Twin Cities traffic. The overpass is already a problem; imagine what a Walmart would do to that! The land they're going to use backs up to residential developments on two sides. Good luck selling those houses. Property value could go down tremendously for homes around the Walmart. The only stores I see losing customers are Raley's and Savemart because Walmart has some of the same things at a cheaper price. Overall, I'm not happy about a Walmart being put in Galt.

  19. Having a Wal-Mart in Galt can have its' pros and cons like many of my classmates have shown, but in my opinion I think it would be better to just keep things the way they are. Yes, Wal-Mart will bring more jobs to our community, but it will also take away the jobs of people who work at CVS, Rite Aid, or even Raleys and Save Mart. Since Wal-Mart can supply all the groceries and needs that these stores supply at lower prices, people are going to start shopping at Wal-Mart instead of stores like we have. To be honest though I can care less what happens because I'm going off to college anyway.haha.

In terms of the new Wal-mart, I believe that there will be a population increase as well as a traffic increase due to the citizens of neighboring cities who wish to shop. The new wal-mart could also harm the environment in terms of pollution and the fact that people fail to clean up after themselves. Citzens in Galt will also have to deal with a lot of cars passing through the streets of their calm neighborhoods. Yes, other local businesses will suffer because it will forever be an issue of competition. The only posative thing about the new store is the fact that jobs will be created and it might stimulate the economy for a while. Personally, I don't see the need for a wal-mart, whoever suggested the idea didn't take certain things into consideration

It will make this town look trashy. Jus saying, don't quote this, but it very well may rise crime like shoplifting or robbing. Just a possibility. And the traffic would be crazy. I believe that the Wal-Mart in the city of Galt would be a good idea aside from the negative points. A Wal-Mart in Galt, would be a big help for many because some shop at Wal-Mart and they have to drive all the way to Lodi, or Elk Grove, and having one in our own city would help a lot. The Wal-Mart in Galt would also help because it would bring with it, new jobs. Some of the cons to the new Wal-Mart in Galt would be that more people will be coming to Galt to the Wal-Mart from near by cities, like Herald, and/or Thornton, which will cause more traffic, other than the traffic that already builds up when it is school or it is flea market days. Other cons to the new store would be that other stores in Galt won't be as successful in selling as much. The new Wal-Mart may also lead people to robbery.

If walmart ends up being finished on twin cities anytime soon, i hope they reconstruct the roads for more passage way for cars.

The pros are that cheap goods will be sold closer to home, there will be many new jobs created, and there will be tax revenue. The cons are the increased traffic problems, the loss of Galt's small town feel, and possibly an increase in crime, like others have already mentioned. The twin cities traffic does not affect me too much because I do not live on that side of town, but if I were to go to this Wal Mart, I would then have to deal with the traffic. 56. Having a Wal-Mart in Galt would be good for revenue in that the store provides many supplies that are not accessible in Galt, therefore, a lot of money will be generated and that money could be used for good in our city. However, the creation of a Wal-Mart will also force many local businesses out of business for they simply cannot compete with the wholesale prices that Wal-Mart receives and gives its customers. Both good and bad things are going to happen if we get a Wal-Mart in Galt.

  64. If Wal-Mart is built in Galt, it is possible that more traffic will fill the streets and cause Galt to be more like a city than the nice peaceful town it is right now. It most defenitely create jobs and harm other business around that sell similar items. The outcome may be bad, but it would save time to go to a place near the house than 15 or more minutes away. I would probably even go more often.

  65. A Walmart in Galt has its pros and cons. The positive effects include more products will be available and now consumers don't have to go as far to shop at the closest Walmart. Some of the negative effects would be that small local businesses would be losing consumers as a result. Walmart could create a lot of revenue from this. It also would create heavy traffic in Galt. At this point the council's decision is indeterminable until it is built and we see what effects Walmart has in our city.

  66. Walmart would do absolutely no good for the economy in Galt. Walmart is an evil coorporation that must be stopped. This is one of the important reasons why, after college, I plan on running for Galt city council, so that I can fight for Galt. Walmart is not good for our economy because it will shut down many small buisnesses, and thus eliminate many jobs. Also why would anyone want a Walmart? Sure things are cheap there, but if you look at the quality you can really tell why the goods are so cheap. As a Galt city council member, I will fight for better stores such as Target or Costco. These are the reasons why we shouldn't have a Walmart and why you should vote Oshalim!

  67. I have not made up my mind about whether or not a Walmart is built in Galt. A walmart will most likely cause heavier trafffic and it will take awy business from other establishments. However, Walmart will also bring in tax revenue and jobs; but then again, if other shops are losing business then won't Galt also lose some tax revenue??and if other shops have less business won't they cut back on employees?? So walmart maybe Galt will not gain that much revenue or jobs; the benefits of walmart would therefore not be as great, if there is even any gains. This issue is very complex.

it all depends on the direction Galt wants to go. the current direction doesnt calls for a need for a walmart, but its convenient and what amrca wants. galt is no longer the small, one-high school, know your neighbor, west side of freeway, galt frostie, no major chain store type of town. its growing and the people are growing and even though we dont NEED a walmart, its convenient and will bring them revenue, which is what they want. its what any business wants, expansion. walmart coming to galt is just them doing their amrcan dream. the most galt can do now is just not stop there...but we will.

I believe that a walmart in galt is a great idea. first i think that save mart and other local stores would lose some customers, but it shouldnt be a big problem. It would also increase the value of our home in the community. The cost might just be that a bit more traffic will be seen.

  71. I have no problem with a Walmart in Galt, it's about time we get something in town so I don't have to embark on an epic exodus to buy competitively priced copy paper. It will bring jobs and revenue this town duly needs, but if Galt is to have a Walmart they need to plan better what is going to happen to the increasingly neglected west side of Galt? You know people live over here too.

  72. There are many bad things you could say about having a walmart in galt, but to look on the bright side of things, i will name a few positive effects. More people in Galt will be employed. Galt doesn't have many places to shop so walmart will be nice so people son't have to commute as often and the taxes imposed on walmart will go back to the city.

Walmart may decrease how much time people spend buying goods from multiple stores because Walmarts tend to have a larger variety products. However the other stores may lose business and have to lay off employees. Of course Walmart will hire employees, but will they be able to hire more employees than the stores that may go out of business. By the way way things look, the Walmart will be built, unless people convince the Galt City Council otherwise.

I think that wal-mart would be mostly beneficial to galt. Many of the small buisnesses in galt fail and they dont sell a lot of the items that wal-mart does sell. Also, employment will help people in this area who are looking for jobs.

  75. I think a walmart would be quite swell. Im tired of driving out of Galt to go to real stores, so I think a walmart would prevent many trips to Elk Grove or Lodi. Galt will do just fine having it and it will bring many jobs for students and unemployed adults.

Walmart is ruining America one store at a time. All those money hungry idiots do is sell cheap garbage from China and screw over their workers with low wages. Sure a Walmart comes to town and brings in jobs but at the lose of the jobs around it. And Galt is not going to bring in people from Elk Grove or Lodi here to shop they already have Walmarts of their own.

  79. There is no doubt that the continuing and the completion of wal-mart will definitely affect the city, and the environment also. The question is, will this all be beneficial, and worthwhile in the long run. As many people would believe that with the completion of the Super Wal-mart, there would be an increase in traffic, however, when dont we face traffic. People are just so hesitant to change that they would come up with the stupidest effects ever. Such as pollution. i mean, come on, its not like California has the cleanest air. Its ridiculous. I think that this Wal-mart would definitely benefit many, no matter what.

I don't want a Walmart here. They're gross and dirty. It will pollute our poor little valley that is over-polluted as it is. It will make traffic a nightmare on Fermoy. They should move it somewhere else, somewhere not on this side of town. It may briong more jobs and help with revenue but it will create all kinds of problems in this area. There will be a large increase in noise complaints due to deliveries being at all hours of the day and night.

I don't like the idea of having a Walmart in Galt. First off, Galt is way too tiny to have that big of a "super store" in the first place. And secondly, bringing in a store like that WILL take away from many jobs that already exist in Galt. I work at Raleys and if we got ran out of business by a stupid Walmart, I would be pissed and would loss a job where I actually receive good pay, good benefits, and a job that is Union.

In my opinion if the walmart cannot affect us in a negative way, though it can only become positive with the growing population that Galt. though a walmart may be positive because people would not have to travel to Lodi or Elk Grove. Lots of people feel that galt makes poor decisions or complain about the lack of money galt but no one wants to exchange money for a little traffic. A Wal-Mart in such a small town is a horrible idea
We have all those small businesses for example, CVS, that will close down.
Yes, it will create jobs, but those that lost their job from the small businesses closing down are all going to scurry to Wal-Mart.
The traffic is going to be ridiculous. Lodi and Elk Grove wouldn't have a need to come here but there towns on the out in the country that will come to town.
The revenue isn't even going to be that dramatic. Only Galt and some of the country folk will be going to this Wal-Mart. Lodi and Elk Grove will not go out of their way to come to Galt to go to Wal-Mart. They have theirs.
This Wal-Mart will ruin Galt, the way it has ruined many other small towns.

  111. Not only is the new Wal-Mart going to worsen pollution, traffic, and property values, other local businesses will definitely suffer as well. Everyone keeps mentioning the tax revenues in such a light that they will bring upon new "parks." Well if you haven't noticed already, there's a park in just about every housing development of Galt. I think we're good on parks. That said, no I don't think the tax revenues would even make up for all the cons of the wal-mart, at least if they really do end up going to such "parks." Yes of course Wal-Mart is a good company to work for and it wil indeed bring about new jobs but the thing is, with moving to Galt, you made a decision to live somewhere where you were going to have to commute to work as well as commute to make purchases that are more than the necessities. If you wanted to be close to work/shopping, you wouldn't have come here. People move to this town because of its small town charm... which will now be ruined by a Wal-Mart! Once it was built they would have to redo twin cities because that road right now can hardly handle the everday traffic of crossing over the bridge. Yes it would bring in tons of tax revenue, but it would also destroy small self-proprietorships that galt has...and it has many. but all of these small shops would have to shut down because they wont be able to keep up with the low costs of walmart. There is already a walmart in lodi and elk grove...why does there need to be another one in the small city of galt between the two?
