Student Online Access (#10)

As many of you know the Galt Joint High School District blocks wikipedia, blogs, and Facebook (among other things) from school computers. Do you think this is a good policy or can you make the academic case for opening up Internet access to a wider selection of sites?

  1. I believe that the sites should not be blocked and that we should have a wider selection of sites because sometimes when working on school projects it doesnt help much when you go on the site and you see it blocked. Yes, i understand that if it is unblocked then kids can go on facebook but at the same time only personal sites shouldnt be blocked. If we have a wider selection of sites it makes it much more easier and convient to do our schoolwork.

I have a split idea on this. I think that it wouldent matter if they did becuse its not like we even use the computers alot in Gov class. I could see if we had acsess to more computers more reguerly that the school should have winkipidea unblocked. i honestly dont know why anything is blocked at our school, but as alwse we have those people who ruin it for the rest of us... I honestly dont see whats wronge with wikipedia. its fast easy infromationand if you need more proof of credibility you can follow that topic to the scorce they got it from originaly. I would think if less people were uptight, we can get more things done.

  3. Personally, I believe that certain sites should not be blocked. For example, wikipedia, blog sites, and various other sites related to wikipedia shouldn't be blocked. On another note, sites like Facebook, myspace, twitter, etc. should be blocked because they can cause distractions in a working environment like school.

  4. I think that sites like wikipedia, yahoo, and sites related to useful information should not be blocked because if a student is doing research at school and those sites are not available then the amount of informatin they can get is limited.Sites like social networking sites should be blocked because they can distract the student.

When it comes to blocking the sites that could provide students with valuable information for homework and projects, I believe the school should reconsider. I don't blame the school for blocking socail networking sites such as Facebook, Myspace, etc., because we aren't here to post status updates, we're here to learn and do our assignments with no distractions. In terms of wikipedia being restricted I do think its a bad thing because the site does offer more information on desired stubjects, but I also belive its a good thing because its almost as if students have become dependent on the same web page, not learning how to obtain information from other various sources.

I support blocking social networking sites such as facebook, however, I believe students should be able to access wikipedia. Wikipedia is a wonderful starting place for research and if you scroll to the bottom of the site there are links to other sources of information that could be more credible and useful.

I think that certain things should be blocked, because many students look up irrelevant information. There are some sites that I personally try to get on because it has useful information to a topic I may be looking up, but everything tends to be blocked.Wikipedia for example, should not be blocked only the things such as porn or anything completely non related to school standards should be.

I think that most sites should be unlocked for student use. Things like Wikipedia can be used as helpful tools to a student. Also, the world is not the same as it was when schools started to block content from the web. Face book and My space are now a part of online life. It has actually got to the point were teachers have made a face book page for their class. Schools should use new technology like this website to advance into the present form of life.

  10. As much as I would love to access facebook while in the computer lab, it's probably not the best academic decision and is unecessary during school hours. However, other sites that are blocked are potentially beneficial to the education process. One that comes to mind is youtube. There is a lot on there that teachers could make use of in their lessons. It would be ideal if there was a way to block restricted sites from student computers only.

  11. I think the fact that they block social networking sites is just fine, but I don't like the fact that they block wikipedia and blogs, and whatnot. Most of these sites have critical information that help in the learning process, and we are not able to access that information. It is quite frustrating when I find a site that actually has what I'm looking for, and I cannot access it.

  12. I personally believe that it is not such a good idea to put blocks on websites at school. We should have a wider selection of websites to view in order to complete either the homework or class projects that are due. Often students will realize that when trying to do a school project or just homework, school computers will block the sites you often need most to complete your school work. School computers then should not be blocked so students may have a wider selection to view and complete their own assignments!

  13. It depends on the particular website. Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter should remain blocked on school computers since they cause distractions and are not relevant to education. However, I do think that websites like Wikipedia and blogs should not be blocked on school computers. Wikipedia does have good information to get a student started on a project and can lead a student to other good websites on a topic. What the school considers to be an "acceptable" website has lead to the inability to access so many websites that it is difficult for students to find sources sometimes.

I completely support Facebook and other social networking sites being blocked. No work would be done if they weren't blocked; and besides, let's face it, the majority of students will spend the next 6 or 7 hours after school on Facebook until they go to bed or have sufficiently procrastinated enough for the night on their schoolwork anyway. I do think Wikipedia should be unblocked at school. A lot of their information is actually credible and useful. I don't think these sites being blocked are really a problem though. We're on our fourth year of having these sites blocked, it really hasn't been an issue.

  19. I do think Facebook and such sites should be continued to b blocked; i have found though that wikipedia is not totally blocked because i have accessed that website but just simply clicking on the link. I do think that websites should be unlocked because they provide quick information and allow for other sources to be quickly found by using their works cited. Sloan p.3

Well sights like Myspace and Facebook are blocked for obcvious reasons. I mean, who would be getting any work done? nobody. So I understand that. Now for Wikipedia, I think it should be unblocked, but we shouldnt be able to cite it in a paper, like we cant now. As for blogs, I think that if it has a reason in a lesson that a teacher is giving, then it should be requested to be unblocked for as long as that teacher needs it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Wikipedia should be un-blocked due to it having valuable links and citations at the bottom of each page. In addition, any changes made to wikipedia are reviewed and if accurate kept, if not discarded. It is perfectly reputable. As for other sites, i really dont care.

  23. There should be more internet access to certain informative websites such as wikipedia. As my peers have said, it would allow us to find more information, which is beneficial for a student to complete his or her hw. Often times, I feel like I am being deprived of info. due to lack of access to valuable sites.

  24. i think that there should be a wider range of websites for students. when i am on a school computer and i'm looking for research i always end up coming across a lot of blocked websites...this doesnt help me at all and it limits my range of research. but i do think that social websites should be blocked because that stuff should be on your own time at home or something.

  28. Wikipedia's works cited is GREAT for finding sources that we ARE allowed to cite, and Wikipedia is a great place to find ideas for papers. it should be allowed, as for blogs, i think no because those have no regulation on whether they contain factual information or not, and facebook should definitely not be allowed, people would clog the computer lab 24/7!

I think that wikipedia and blogs are a great start to research and should be allowed back at school. Wikipedia in general has become a very reputable resource and has created a large task force of people that can and do change wrong information on wikipedia. Facebook on the other had is what distracts many people including myself from homework and other activities. Facebook should not be allowed.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Sites such as wikipedia should be able to be viewed. While the school sees them as "non-usable" sites for research, wikipedia provides numerous amounts of other sites to get research otherwise not seen in google.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Blocking web sites such as Facebook, Myspace, etc. in school is understandable because those would be a distraction. Other sites that can be used for inforation should not be blocked. Wikipedia and some blogs should be aloud. The information on wikipedia helps students get a general understanding of their topic before going into more in depth research. Social networking sites should be blocked as they cause distraction but email hosting sites should be allowed for file sharing between the home and school.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think that websites such as Facebook,Myspace and other useless sites for school work should be blocked. The necessary websites for school work should be unblocked. For example Wikipedia can help students with info. Some students don't have computers at home and make it harder for them to do their work at school because of the blocked sites.

I can see both sides of this case. On the one hand the district is just trying to protect us from profanity and other inappropriate things on the internet. On the other hand, we should have access to all types of information out there so that we as students can evaluate all of the materials out there and decide for ourselves what is right or wrong. A good example of something the district has blocked but is of good use to us is this blog. Not only is it of good use to us, but it is also a part of our grade. If a teacher finds a site that is blocked but they deem it appropriate and useful to our education then they should have it reviewed by the district to get it approved as an unblocked site for all classes to benefit from. There are more advantages to unblocking these sites than disadvantages.

I agree with Facebook and other social networking sites being blocked but there are so many sites that are blocked that could help with doing research. Wikipedia should definitely be unblocked because it is an easy way to get useful information. I know that while im trying to get research done it like you get no where because it seems that everything you click on is blocked.

  36. It really doesn’t bother me that some sites are blocked at school. Students really don’t need to be on face book ect. during school. If you’re in the computer lab with your class, your there for a purpose and I’m sure it’s not for face book. Regarding Wikipedia and sites like that, well we aren’t even allowed to use them for school projects so there’s no point in even looking at the site. I say, just leave the policy as it is; UNLESS the school is paying money to block these sites. I’m not sure if they are or not, but if so, that’s a BIG waste of money. Students shouldn’t be going on those sites during school but I don’t think we should waste school money on it when we barley have any in the first place.

To me, it makes sense that facebook and other social networking sites are blocked since we aren't going to need any research info. off of those sites and kids would just be on the computers all the time for the fun of it maybe when others need them for more important reasons... BUT any other site, esp. wikipedia, I find no reason that it should be blocked as research can be found pretty much on any other site except for facebook, etc. Therefore, my own personal policy would be to block only like facebook/myspace/twitter and leave everything else alone for open usage.

i think that it is a fantastic idea to block these sites. our school has too many hooligans who lose focus instantly to sites like these. by blocking these social networks, it only forces students to zone in on the one task in school, to get educated. if we had these distractions, i believe grades would drop dramatically. at the same timeeeee, a lot of students dont use their lab time wisely.

I agree that facebook should be blocked because it isn't used for academic reasons. However, blogs and wikipedia should be allowed because they are used for educational purposes. Wikipedia should not be used in a works cited, but it is a great tool for learning the basics and it provides sources from which it took information. There have been numerous occasions in class where my teachers could not show us something because a site was blocked.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think that certain sites such as, wikipedia, can be called academic because they take information from other credible sites and compact the information into one easy to read page. While the information there should be double-checked to use the student should be able to cite Wikipedia for their projects. Blogs, however, have less credibility to me because people can say whatever they think and have almost no censorship. I think blogs could be used for personal research but have no place in the classroom. Other sites like facebook also should be blocked from school because it will just offer more distraction from actual schoolwork. Even if some people find it helpful to communicate with others, there are too many other thigs on the site that will take them away form working.

The only purpose for email is to contact teachers and send yourself notes and links so you can find the same info at home that you found in class. wiki is also a great source. it may not always be 100% accurate but it does have a lot of good information that is hard to find elsewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I believe that some sites should be able to be viewed by us students. We are growing up and there should be less restrictions put against us for academic purposes. Many sites that are blocked are not allowing us to view full info of certain topics. The kids that abuse the internet at school should be put on restrictions, but if students only use it for school related topics they should be able to view sites that have previously been blocked.

  55. School's these days just don't realize how big a factor the internet has become. As many students need it to access information necessary for projects, essays, homework, and other school-related work. It's kind of ridiculous on how far the school would go to somehow "protect us" from the dangers of the internet. Such as Wikipedia, oh how dangerous and evil it is(keep in mind, i'm being sarcastic). Every time I try to look up information in my Journalism class, next thing you know, a big "warning" sign pops up stating that the site is so called unaccessible. Not like i was going on some site i wasn't supposed to. It was completely legit. The school needs to lighten up, and accept the fact that sometimes, certain websites are necessary.

But there are soo many websites blocked that can be great use to students that I feel the school should not even block sites anymore. Students who don't have Internet access at home and comes to school in order to do some online researching aren't able to because so many of the websites are blocked. Yes, there are other websites to look on, but as it seems to me, the school keeps blocking more and more websites each year. It's ridiculous. But all the websites like wikipedia and other info sites shouldnt be blocked because then we cant get any research done at school. If you want to look something up you cant because the websites are all blocked.

I think the policy on this issue is good as it is right now. Maybe a re-evaluation of what EDUCATIONAL sites are blocked or not, sometimes there are some sites that are very helpful but they are blocked, either cuss its a forum or blog. So i think the social websites should stay blocked and a re-evaluation is needed but its not really a big deal

  81. You shouldn't be able to cite these sites but you should at least be able to look at them. Wikipedia is very helpful when doing homework and proides usefull information that can give you a good background on a project.

Wikipedia does have a lot of information and should be allowed because it helps people quickly find information or at least a good summary of what they searched for. Teachers should be the ones that say whether or not Wikpedia will be allowed as a source of information. Blogs and other sites should be blocked because they usually contain more opinions, than actual facts.

I think having internet sources blocked is kind of annoying at times but then again it is smart because a lot of people normally cant focus mainly on school. When we are looking stuff up at school and certain web sites are blocked, it makes things harder but facebook and other websites I can see why they are blocked from students. We're on them 24/7 outside of school

  87. well...i think that it'd be good to have the sites unblocked. some of them are helpful for school projects and its really inconvenient when the site comes up blocked. We should just block personal sites.

I MEAN IF ITS LIKE FACEBOOK AND MYSPACE THEN I GUESS THEY SHOULD BLOCK IT AT SCHOOL BUT FOR EXAMPLE WIKIPEDIA OR YOUTUBE SOMTIMES CAN BE A GOOD RESOURCE. IT PERSONALLY GETS ON MY NERVES WHEN I HAVE TO DO RESEARCH AT SCHOOL AND ALL THE GOOD WEBSITES ARE ALL BLOCKED..GGRRR!!!!

  89. I think that the school should unblock things that help students meet academic requirements; wikipedia for example is a great tool for research, most of us need research for our assignments. The blog should also be unblocked because it is something we are required to do.

I think that the school should unblock certain cites because when your looking for some thing you always because its all the good sites that are blocked for example you tube isn't that bad and can be good for showing clips to student in class . the sites that i'm OK with being blocked are like Facebook Myspace and others .

I believe that wikipedia should not be blocked. It has valueble information and helpful when we start our research for something bigger. Wikipedia has its resources at the bottom of the page to check ourselves for authenticy. Not all websites should go unblocked though like facebook and twitter.

  95. I think we should be allowed to use wikipedia on the school computers because it is a helpful website. Wikipedia cites its sources and student can use these sources for research. Other websites like facebook would be nice to have but it would be a distraction for the students.

Obviously not a single student at Galt High School likes this policy. It is extremely annoying when you are trying to research stuff on school computers and you can't get to a websites because it's blocked. But most of the time those sites, like wikipedia, aren't 100% reliable because anyone can put whatever they want on there. I don't think it is that big of a deal. If people would do their homework before the day it's due, no one would even care what sites are blocked.

Sites that can lead to poentially dangerous or harmful results should be blocked. Sites such as wikipedia and blogs are not the threat that schools are afraid of so they would not need to be blocked.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I dont think it really matters if they are blocked or not you can always find information on other web sites. If the school feels that it should be blocked then block it, we could always get the information from home if it is that important.

  101. The school is censoring our use of the media. This is good and bad. We are being fed a trickle of the knowledge out there so that we thirst for more. We learn what the school wants us to learn about. how can we think for our self, if we are always told what to think? Learn about the world from inside a box with only one hole to view through.

I think that all sites should be unblocked on school computers. If kids want to waste their time going on facebook or any chat website then let them be. There just waisting there time and risking their grade. Wikapedia can be used if you trust it enough, because people can change it whenever they want so its your opinion to do what you want.

  105. I believe that the sites should not be blocked and that we should have a wider selection of sites. By blocking a good amount of sites, that! narrows it down in our sources, such as Wikipedia even thou it is a open opinion but most of it is very useful. And as for blogs yes because that gives us another opportunity to get our blogs done in school!

Yes, i understand that if it is unblocked then kids can go on facebook but at the same time only personal sites shouldnt be blocked. If we have a wider selection of sites it makes it much more easier and convient to do our schoolwork.

  109. Although many sites should in fact be blocked from Galt High school, there are some sites that are helpful in the classroom. YouTube has many videos of recent economic, world, and government issues and events. In order for our teachers to help us understand and learn about whats going on in the world. It can also be used as a tool to compare many current events with things we understand as well, such as certain clips from television shows or movies.

  110. Sure, facebook and myspace should probably be blocked at school, partly to respect the wishes of parents who don't want their kids on those sites where the kids would take advantage of the access at school, but also to keep kids from goofing off while they should be working on class projects and such (not that we don't always find other things to goof around and do anyway).
Wikipedia however, is a great resource. It's almost always obvious when the information is fake, even if you don't know much about the subject you are researching, and wikipedia often has sources at the bottom of articles, which can lead you to ligitimate sources for your research. Wikipedia is a great starting point, and we should be allowed to use it.

I think that our school should keep blogs and communication sites blocked, but I think things like wikipedia and other sites should be allowed because that can actually help students start somewhere in their research. Honestly though, Facebook and stuff should be blocked because as a student I know that sites like this distract me from my work.

  112. i think that our school should open up just you-tube because it helps out if a teacher wants to show something to his class. i do not care if face-book is blocked. face-book is not very important anyway. Wikipedia probably should be open too because it is a helpful source.

  113. The blocking of social websites like Facebook is completely warranted and understandable.
Sites like youtube can be helpful for educational videos, of which I have personally seen many pertaining to math and science, and filters can be placed on the viewing capabilities to limit use to educational only.

Wikipedia should be open season because it is an excellent source of information. It provides backgrounds for things almost impossible to find elsewhere, and often more information than you could get from multiple other sites. Although the validity of wikipedia is questionable because it can be edited by anyone, there are moderators consistently checking it to make sure information is not tampered with. It cannot be used as a source for this reason, but it provides great general overview and a list of other sources that can be used on the same topic.

  117. hello mr. bauer its janett gomez it has been a while since ive posted ..technical issues but i have to say that its a good thing that we dont have facebook access on the computer since half of the kids at the school dont even do the work they are supposed to do during class. Haveing facebook would be an even bigger distraction and it would cause a whole lot of drama. I think the school accually protects the kids too much from the pictures on google. How do they expect us to do a good job on school projects if the oictures come out black and white and we have only so much of variety to choose from. but yeah thats all i really have to say...
