A Route to Citizenship in Defense Bill (Post #11)

On Saturday the Wall Street Journal published an article about David Cho a student at UCLA and an illegal immigrant from South Korea who arrived in the U.S. twelve years ago at the age of nine. Mr. Cho is one of the 825,000 illegal immigrants who may gain american citizenship through the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors bill—informally known as the Dream Act. This act would give illegal aliens who came to the U.S. by the age of 15 and who had been in the U.S. for five years and graduated from high school legal residency for six years in return for two years of college or military service during that time. At that point the young person would be eligible for citizenship. Proponents of this bill argue that it would help military recruitment by adding patriotic soldiers and benefit the country as a whole by adding educated population. Opponents think this bill is a thinly veiled amnesty bill. What do you think? Would this bill help the military and america as a whole. Does service prove loyalty? Commitment to becoming a citizen? Does immigration policy belong in a defense bill? Could this be political theatre to gain votes in the coming midterm elections?

This bill could help military recruitment a lot. If the illegal aliens' only options are to go to college for two years or provide military service for two years, they are likely to go the military route. Many of them probably don't have the money to attend college or even get a loan to pay for college. Military would be the only option for a lot of these people. Just because they join the military however, does not mean that they are helping us. They could join only to leak some of our secrets to their home countries and that would not benefit us in the slightest.

  2. I belive that the more educated the population of a country is the beter the country benefits. An illegal immigrant that fights in the military of a country that they were not even born in shows that they want to be a part of it. The United States would greatly benefit from the increase in the military epsecially in times of need. Why would a country want to reject a more educated population. I think that an individual who serves his country deserves the opportunity to be a citizen of the country. My parents brought us when we were little kids,a and we have gotten an education that benefits us and the United States. People that come to this country for good deserve the opportunity to cetizenship.

  3. I think that this bill is great for the U.S. military and for our country as a whole. It is an amnesty bill, but we are gaining highly educated people or those who are willing to risk their lives for a country that does not even allow them to vote yet. I do not believe this will mean a massive introduction of new citizens either. An immigrant has to first find a way to pay for two years of college or commit to the military, and neither of those options are relatively easy.

It seems like it would be a great benefit for both the US and for the immigrants. They (immigrants) get to come to the US and get an education, while we (US) in turn get soldiers. It's a win win situation for the time being.

  6. The Bill would definently lead to more patriotic military people as they would feel better about fighting for a country that has provided a lot for them. It would also promote a better educated population which is needed during a time where the country is in need of quick thinkers. Immmigration policy can be in any bill that immigration affects. Whether it be economic or educational, immigration is something larger than just one area so it should be taken into consideration that America needs to crackdown on immigration.

  9. i believe that service to the country can prove loyalty, but if they're here illegally they've already broken our laws. illegals should be (in a perfect world which this is not because we depend on their cheap labor) deported and gain access legally to be here.

I think this bill would be good for our country. It would help our military out so much because we would have more citizens to choose from. The only thing that i would be hesitant about, would be some immigrants might not be loyal. Even though they have been here for awhile and fits the requirement to become a citizen doesn't mean they will be loyal to us. It will be hard for the immigrants to go to college because of the cost of it. If they are capable of going through everything to become a citizen then that's great for our country.

  12. I dont think this is a good idea because the military should not be open to citizens of other countries ever. its not like there arent hundreds of military applicants signing up everyday to join the military, and these are natural- born citizen, which i feel, are the only ones the military should have. these people should go through the citizenship process to be even allowed into our country! they shouldn't just earn the right because they have gotten away with being an illegal alien all those years.

This bill will seem to help our military and america as a whole because it will not only give us more of an option of military personnel to choose from, but it will give us more educated minds in this country which any country needs. Let's just hope that no one coming from another country tries to abuse this and kills it for the rest by doing something stupid.

  14. I think that bill could be America's ticket to get illegal immigrants to come and be citizens here legally. I think that this can help our economoy, because one, higher education means higher paying jobs to boost our economy and two, it will help our military. on the other hand it could be hard because not all of the immigrants could be loyal so perhaps if that happened then they could put some precautionary bill pertaining to that.

  15. This seems like a very reasonable bill, specifically because, if immigrants are willing to participate in society, then there really isn't much difference between them and any other citizen. If they are willing to work and serve in the military or attend college, they are the type of immigrant we want...It's the ones who are here illegaly and do nothing to contribute to society that we want out, especially if they are committing crimes.

  16. I consider this to be a great opportunity for the US to become a better country, promoting a more educated public. This act would benefit the US with more tax money coming in from hardworking people who deserve the right to progress just as any other citizen and improve the population with a better educated residence. The people who brought their children to this country at a young age did not commit a crime in wanting a better future for their families. Maybe the life and country they originated from didn't offer them the rights to freedom a person should lawfully sustain. They were just in search of a life worth living, as do all of us. & honestly, some people take what they have for granted, not fully recognizing what benefits this country has to offer. So I'm the end, I do believe that this Act is one that should not go unnoticed.

  17. As if states, the Dream Act would help the military and America as a whole because of its compromise. It also may seem as a bad idea if it is looked if the citizen who went through this act is not helping America and instead is harming it. Therefore, this service does not prove loyalty because it's up to that own individual even though it may be commitment to his/her citizenship.

I think that this bill is a good idea. Immigrants want citizenship and complain about it. The kids who actually want to be here to get a better education and like our country should be rewarded and get citizenship here. They are serving our country and bettering it as well. I belive that since they are helping out and actually want to do something in america that they deserve it.

  19. I think that illegal immigrant kids/teens who come to the US shouldn't be thrown into the military just to prove their loyalty. They might be here for freedom or education, or even a better lifestyle because where they come from is poor or horrible. They should have a decision whether they want to join the military or not. We shouldn't put them in ourselves.

I think this bill would be good for our country because as others have already pointed out, it would lead to more military personnel and also a better educated country. I think this is a good opportunity for many immigrants because most likely they came to the U.S. in search for a better life. By going to college, their chances of a good job and success in the future are much higher. Also, I believe that this bill is great for many illegal minors because it might not have been their choice to come here in the first place, so at least they have an option.

I see the Dream Act as a wonderful opportunity for all people trying to achieve the "American dream". There are thousands upon thousands of undocumented people in America who are "blameless for their status and helpless to make it right. Most cannot leave their families to return to countries they do not know. They cannot legally work, qualify for scholarships or loans to pay for college, or serve in the military. They live in limbo, vulnerable to arrest, their dreams deferred, their hopes squandered." The Dream Act provides hope for those who once had none. "The educators and others who also support the act recognize how much better it is to encourage the aspirations of young people, not to consign them to lives of under-the-table jobs and unmet potential." Not only are we motivating undocumented people and helping the greater good, we are gaining a large amount of educated people. We are making America better by providing our "invisible" inhabitants education and documentation."The Dream Act alone won't achieve the large-scale reform the country needs. But it will be a desperately needed affirmation that fixing immigration is not all about border fear and lockdowns. It's about welcoming the hopeful."

I do think because some arrived before 15 they should have the opportunity to get a proper education (hence we being the "Land of Opportunity", which can be isolated to that of the West). Maybe at the age of 18 an illegal alien may apply to be a U.S. citizen. Fair enough to me.

If the Dream Act allowed illegal immigrants to earn citizenship in a due ammount of time, then I'd support the issued bill. There are always concerns about illegal immigrants, but since I don't really see the problem with people coming to America, I guess I don't really pay attention. In some cases I believe that the Dream Act would ease people's minds about immigrants. At least they'd be going to school in hopes of getting better jobs, having to start out new and not just taking the jobs of other people, having to work as equally hard to get to the top. And thoes who choose to be in the military would be kind enough to be willing to defend our country, proving their loyalty. Also, getting a good education would benefit America. The next immigrant could work very hard to become a highly recognized doctor who vowes to help better the lives of his country's people.

If these illegal aliens were to go to college and become educated just as us legal citizens do, even though I have to admit that our society is always better off with more educated people, ultimately these has-been aliens could end up taking jobs from us. I think though, that if this does happen to be the case in the end, it shouldn't be that drastic a situation as not that many will participate in this act. Many aliens probably aren't going to choose to go this route, whether it be because they don't have the money or they just can't get into a college (since they haven't lived here since their kindergarten years as we have to acquire the same level of knowledge). All in all, this bill will probably end up being more advantageous than harmful and so therefore has my support.

It will also grant citizenship to those who came illegally and who have been living and faithfully studying in the U.S. It also helps the army gain new troops that will be knowledgeable think up tactics that will lead our country to victory. This shows also the loyalty and commitment to become a legal citizen of illegal immigrants that wish to be apart of this country. It is the people that make this country beautiful and admired by all others. Those who are committed to becoming knowledgeable will cause the U.S. to rise above all other areas.

There should not be an express lane for people that have gone into the military, if we dont trust these people enough to be citizens, we should not trust them with guns, they could just wind up killing our own people. If you ask me id say keep them in their place and us in ours, and stop immigration as a whole. If someone hops the boarder illegaly and drops out a kid then the kid gets citizenship? thats b, and so is this, i think we should just build a fortress around the whole us and not let anyone in.

It will provide a more quick way for immigrants to become citizens, the only problem is that there are only two options- military or college. If they can commit to either of those two then they are set. One thing that I saw come up throughout the blog was the fear that the immigrants will end up being spies. I believe illegal immigration is wrong. Personally becoming a US citizen should be a process in which immigrants have to endure. It is unfair to the people in our own country who put forth the work and effort to have it taken away in a flash. This Bill is stupid from my perspective. Honestly, how are we suppose to pay for people in other Nations we can barely pay for ourselves? Seriously if we can pay for education and Military necessities through our government for foreigners hey here's an idea... WHY DONT WE JUST GIVE ALL NATURAL BORN CITIZENS COLLEGE FUNDS? Seriously, there are students out there that drown themselves in student loans, put themselves in DEBT just so they can live a life and get a job that hasn't been outsourced! We live in this country therefore we should get benefits rather than illegal immigrants! This is ridiculous, there are always going to be volunteers and there are ALWAYS going to be people that need to join the Military to better themselves because they have nothing. SO WHY! WHY... bring in Illegal immigrants to TAKE this spot? When they should just get their green cards, the right way, STOP SNEAKING INTO OUR COUNTRY, learn how to speak our language and live as an actual member of the United States of America that functions in the workforce as an equal!

  100. I couldn't disagree more with this proposed bill. First off, just because illegal immigrants are in the military doesn't mean they want to be there; maybe they just chose to join so they didn't have to return to their country. And just because they're in college doesn't mean they are learnind. Forcing them either into the military or college won't help this country at all. If illegal immigrants really want to be a citizen of this country, they'll go through the necessary requirements to do so.

Giving back to America for getting citizenship is an effective way to gain loyalty. The Dream Act seems to benefit both illegal immigrants and the U.S. It could increase the military's power and/ or illegal immigrants' education level. It is a good thing that the U.S is trying to help illegal immigrants that probably came to the U.S with their relatives or when they were too young to know what was happening. This way illegal immigrants can become citizens while being productive at the same time. However they should create an ROTC type program where the illegal immigrant completes 2 years of military service and then goes to college for two years, but extend the residency to 8 years. This way they don't just get free tuition, while most legal citizens can't even afford one year of college without loans.

  105. I really don't think this bill is a good idea i mean it's not exactly fair for the government to put illegal immigrants into the army to become citizens but i do think it is fair to gain citizenship in exchange for years in college because sometimes illegal immigrants are more serious about their education than other people their age that were born in the U.S.

Plus, whose idea was it to give illegals the right to join the military so they can be a resident? Pretty dumb idea there. Just asking for another brutal attack on the country. I believe that the dream act is great because it will allow our country to be one of oppurtunity and give the example that a citizen doesn't have to be born, to show that a citizen can be created. That through education one can succeed and become a worthy person to be a citizen. Also this would only help the country by having all these people that are interested in having an education and many cases the careers that are been done are those that lack to be done by society today. The soldiers I believe would help but they must have certain love and pride for the cuntry of they are willing to risk their lives. It would also allow those who want to get a higher education to go to college; there are concerns that immigrants who have a higher education will take away jobs from the people that were born here, but if Americans do not want to lose those jobs to immigrants then they should also try to further their education. I know that getting a higher education is expensive but it will also be expensive for immigrants, so they have no advantage. If we allow educated immigrants to become citizens then they will be paying taxes and their higher education will probably mean that they will be paying more than the many other Americans who will be earning minimum wage. There are also concerns that immigrants in the military can act as spies for foreign nations; however i think that foreign nations in need of information would probably rely on spies whose background would not arise suspicion. They shouldnt just hand out citizenship for nothing. You should earn your rights not just have them be given to you. Not any one person should be automatically become a citizen.

  142. I believe that this bill is a great idea. I believe that he should be allowed to be here because hes making an education for himself and is actually doing something here not being one of those annoying nonenglish speaking guys that just bug people all day. This will definitely bring a better military and will benefit the US.

I think the Dream Act will be good for our country because we will have more educated people in the U.S. I think illegal immigrants who came to this country at a very young age and completed school, should be able to go to college.

  144. I believe that this bill would not help our military as men and women who have been born and raised in our country wouldtn join the military those who arent citizens prob wouldnt and if this bill came into affect it would give those who came to our country illegally nothing more than a slap on the wrist.

  145. this bill would help out in the number of military people that is counry has an the education levels would jump up as well something that this country truly needs at this time we are in .So in mr.chos case i think it would be great so he can be a good citizen to this country.

  146. i think that it is a good opportunity for the US because illegal immigrants will become citizens while doing something helpful to our country. they can either serve in the military or get a good education.

  147. I think it's a fantastic idea! There are millions of undocumented students who whish to get an education. Some illegal immagrants see this country as their home now and wish to make the best of it by helping and getting involved. It would help the military and other jobs that are needed in the United States. I believe this Law should be passed and that their shouldn't be any hesitation because a lot of illegal immigrants are smart and would problaby be the next to help other citizens make the U.S a better place.

  148. I think that this bill is a good idea. Immigrants want citizenship and complain about it. The kids who actually want to be here to get a better education and like our country should be rewarded and get citizenship here. They are serving our country and bettering it as well.

I beleive in people being able to gain citizenship for joining the military beacause that shows patriotism. I don't like the college thing especially if the students get it free.

  150. Many illegal immigrant students have lived in th eunited states for most of thier life. They have adapted to the customes and values of America. If they move on to college or serve in the military for two years with the customs of an American, why should they not live in America. They also have to have "good moral conduct" which will insure they are worthy of living here. If illegal immigrants became residents they would be taxed which would eliminate a major aspect of immigration. Most of all the Dream Act represents what America is, the land or dreams and opportunities.

This isn't a good idea at all. Illegal immigrants shouldn't be given more than they already are. What, now they get citizenship after coming in illegally and probably sucking our system dry for five or six years? I don't think that proves loyalty at all. It's loyalty to nonresidents of the country, not the actual citizens here. It probably wouldn't help out our military much anyway.

  153. this could be a bad idea. it will just give not-yet illegal immigrants more incentive to rationalize a choice to break the law in coming to america. i may be misunderstanding the concept here, but why would we want to give more opportunities to people FOR breaking the law? it's backwards.

I do belive that this act will increase the military population. I am not sure though that an illegal immigrant, however, will stay true to our country if we happen to be at war with their home country.another thing though they are "illegal" aliens meaning that they came here illegally so why should others who are caught trying to come here be rejected while the ones who succedeed in sneaking over here have a chance to become a U.S. citizen.

  156. I think the DREAM act is a great idea. How many great minds are we depriving the chance to help the world by keeping them from becoming citizens? How many amazing discoveries are we not having because these geniuses aren't citizens? Immigration doesn't belong with defense; they're two separate issues.

  157. My opinion is theirs more to this story than meets the eye, in every person in the whole world that one person has an opinion it might be a good thing to do this but why are illegal immigrants still hopping borders. Patriotism is just a word our founding fathers wanted to find reason and question things before taking action.

The Dream Act... well I actually approve of it. I think that if immigrants actually try their hardest to be an American and do all those steps to becoming American, they deserve it. I honestly don't see why this is such a problem, if I like it, most people should. It would give them eduaction, they would help our country, etc. It's a good act that should be passed

  159. i think that this is a good plan for the US, it will allow the illegal immigrants that are here to become citizens while helping out our country through either the military or education. The illegal immigrants are her, now they can become citizens while doing good and helping the country

  160. I am a proponent and I believe that the Dream Act would help our country as a whole. It would either make the immigrant go to college which would help them find a place in society and help our economy, or the immigrant would help our military. Ultimately, the immigrant would be helping our entire country in either case. If they end up going through with the Dream Act, they would actually deserve to be a citizen because they helped our country. I think it could be a political theatre to gain votes in the coming midterm elections.

  162. i really dont know what that bill would do. only trying to get immagrents in to the military to show that they care more for the U.S instead of their original country? it makes really no sense. but it the U.S think its gonna do good, they go ahead

No, she has no right to get any schooling. She has no right to have any freedom. She has no right to have any say in anything. She is still not from the us, nor did her parents do the correct things to be her legally. I think they should have deported her right there on the spot when they found this out.

I think that the dream act could be a dream come true to many illgal students in this country because that would give them the right to continue on with school and make the counrty better. No i don't think that this is like an amnesty because not every illegal alien will get the citizenship only the ones that want to continue on with their education and military would be stronger with more education and it would give a chance for the ones that want to be something to accomplish their goals and become succesfull in their lives. this reminds me of Martin Luther King jr. with hes term "I Have A Dream" many illegal students also have a dream and that is to be given that opportunity to continue with their studies.

i do belive that this act will increase military population. im not positve that an illegal immigrant will be in good behavior to our country if we happen to be at war with their home country. theyre "illegal" imigrants meaning that they came here illegally. some of these people are about to get their citizenship while others are just getting caught. it isnt very organized.
