President's Spech to Students (Post #10)

On Tuesday, President Obama gave his second address to K-12 students across the country. Last year, many teachers showed the speech in class and much controversy was made nationwide, with some parents opting to have their students stay home and not watch the event. Watch this year's video below (it's 20 minutes long, so you can jump around to get the idea, speech really starts at about 5:30 in). The written transcript is available if you have video or audio problems.  The message again this year is individual responsiblity.

Think about what it means for you as a student.  What it means for your younger siblings and cousins, your future children, and those growing up around you who are going to make up the adult population in the future.

Just freely share your thoughts on the topic of what it means to have personal responsibility and the importance of education.

Focus on the words and not so much the person

  1. I remember watching this on t.v when Barak was talking about how students need to be responcible when it comes down to school. He is right, students need to take education seriously and should do what ever it takes to learn to better the future of all of us. it was a good speech with good intentions for the Students of today.

  2. I believe that everything obama said in this speech is true. Students need to be responsible about school because our decisions in life not only affect us but the country as well. I also believe that with effort and hardwork, anybody can be anything that they want to be in life.

  3. it is my personal belief that to better the world we live in we must learn about it and understand it. how can you improve a car's design if you know nothing about cars? the more we learn the better we can make the world and ourselves, and it's always up to us to make the decision to learn and succeed.

  4. School is not only important for the world but it is also important to yourself. People today need goals. Whether its losing fifty pounds, gaining twenty for muscles, or whatever. But school and knowledge are the highest goals because anyone can go to a gym. But it takes dedication and time and the will to learn to go to school, get good grades, and make yourself better today to help the world of tomorrow.

  5. School is a must in this country. No If Ands Or Buts about it it is required for every citizin to go to school to get an education and try and expand the worlds Smarts not its minor flaws. Today we have iPhones, ipods, HTC's blackberry's HP, Apple, Dell, Ford, GM, Chevy and many other things that make life A Lot smoother but what about the cancer patients and the pepole that have respiator problems. all the technology we have now isn't nessisarilly helping them out. America needs an education and a strong one at that. We need things to help us live longer and help mother earth not iphones and cadillacs we need machines or medicines to help people get their life back it is what they deserve. So we all must go to school and get our education sop we can be the ones that thrive and become stronger and smarter. not other nations.

School is such an important part of life for everyone. We go to school to get an education and to ultimately achieve our dreams in the future. What Obama said in his speech is true: everyone is responsible for their own future. In order to be successful in the future, we need to get an education and form a self-discipline right now. Anyone can be what they want to be if they apply themselves and work hard.

This speech that Obama gave had the right intentions to it. However, a lot of people didn't take him seriously. Those people are dumb. School and education is so important in life. Now a days in our society you need a college degree to get a good job. Without one, you probably won't be working at a well paid job. Our economy is depending on us to get out of the mess we are in. Students should take their education very seriously to help our society.

Getting and education and going to school is an important part of life. Going to school gives you social skills and ability to achieve goals and reach full potential. An education helps you in the day to day world and with dealing with others.

  10. In order to be successful in life after high school, you need to have an interest in something, learn more about it, and then go do it. You cant just completely ignore every moment of school. Even though it is unlikely everything you learn in school will be used later, it is still good to know certain things.

I think that education is very important to be succesful in life. The world is only getting more complex and the competition from other countries and our own is building. The only way we can compete with them is to earn an education and gain skills.

  12. I believe that President Obama's comments in his speech was right on, especially when he says that an education is the most important thing for the future. This will help America by increasing our human capital, which will help, at least in the future to shift our production possibilities curve to shift to the right, benefiting our economy, and our everyone, because we will have more goods, and thus we will have more money if we trade with other nations. It also benefits the individual, because the more educated that you are, the better jobs you can get, and the more money you can make. So there are two reasons that education is important, number one is that it helps you earn more money, and number two, it helps improve your country's economy.

  22. This was actually a very good speech from our president. He pretty much narrowed it down on how to be successful with our lives and how we should be determined in ourselves. He really got to me when he said we are all capable in achieving our goals and succeeding in life. None of us are not capable of doing so. Everyday my dad tells me to work hard and make the effort so I can get a diploma, get a great well-paid job, and make good decisions for myself. President Obama also mentioned about treating others the way you want to be treated. Now that is the golden rule in life because if we don't treat others good, what possibility will you have that those people and others will treat you good? How will you achieve in getting a good job and making goals for yourself if your not going to treat other people good? Treating others the way you want to be treated helps our society flow in a good direction and everybody need to learn that. Never give up during your high school career. If you don't get a diploma, certificate, GED, whatever, from high school, how will you ever find a great job in life? You would pretty much work in a place that gives you less than minimum wage, if lucky, or you go on the streets begging for a home, food, money, etc. Those people didn't try and were lazy and I know for sure that I'm not going to be one of these people. I care about myself and my future and everybody should think the same way too. Get your diploma, go to college if you choose to, get a good job, and live your life to the fullest. High school passes by pretty quick for us teenagers and try to make the best of those 4 years for you, your friends, and especially your family.

What I think about this is that that was still during the time that Obama was outrageously popular because of his race and that it wouldn't have been shown to students if he was white, but it still would have if it had been a female president, it was only shown, from what i had seen, by either the teachers that are really into politics enough to watch every one with their class, which i doubt happened in any classes except for government classes; but more so by the teachers that are glad to see a black man in the presidency.

School not only offers necessary learning skills, but also life lessos. By keeping an open mind and a clear conscious, we're able to handle anything that life my throw at us. 35. I agree with Obama's point that the success of a student truely depends on how much work that student does. In real life, practice really does make perfect. The longer you work at something, the better you will be at that skill. I know for myself that even trying to take up sports is quite a challenge at times. I play tennis and I know that compared to the first day I went to a beginning tennis lesson compared to today at my advanced tennis lessons, I would seen as a completely different player. My skill as an athlete came from three years of hard work and dedication to practicing tennis. Obama also made a point that being intelligent does not necessarily put a person a head of everyone else. I find this to be INCREDIBLY true, especially in the school system. I know many people that are a lot smarter than I am, but they have worse grades than I do because they do not do their homework whereas I do. The only way to learn to actually try. In the real world, a person needs to try at their job otherwise they'll risk losing it. The only real way to be successful is through effort. I think President Obama is sending a great message through his series of educational speeches.

I believe that every word Obama just said in this video is very well said in the way that it motivates students in any level, being a 1st grader or a 12th grader in becoming someone better in life and to have a greater future. The thing is that one has to know how to apply it to their own life and situation. I do agree with him that each one is responsible for their own future, and to have that future that many desire to have can not come so easily without education. I think that people should make the right decision and keep doing the right thing with the education and not stop until the end. Like Obama said it, that if you quit on your education its not only quiting on yourself its quiting the on the whole country because soon its going to be us out there in the world, and there should be people who know how to give a good example to the ones to follow. I really think that if one wants to be something important in life they should keep up the hard work to get the results you want. Nothing comes easy in this life, it only comes with the effort and then the success will come. One has to at the least try, and keep trying untill one gets the neccesary. If one wants to reach a goal keep trying never say "I can't" because everyone has something there good at, and with that little thing they know how to do and enjoy they can turn it into their career like being a dentist, teacher, or even a president. Nothing in this world is impossible, unless you try.

One of my biggest frustrations in my life is when, regarding school, if I score well on a test, etc., I have someone tell me that I am "lucky" when in reality, luck has nothing to do with it. It's all about hard work and not about "luck" whatsoever. Unfortunately, as I have grown older it seems that I am relying more on my "luck" than anything. In the past, I used to be one of the most dedicated, hard-working students and have steadily been navigating a down hill slope since my freshman year. As I have experienced a steady drop in my GPA as well, the idea has proved itself to me that it really is hard work that brings upon success and not "luck." I hope that my peers, as well as myself, can find the drive within to be self disciplined and be the most hardworking and therefore successful Americans that Obama wishes us to be as well as what we owe to our own future to be. It's really sad to say, but that scares some older folks. The way you represent yourself in school, is most likely how you'll represent yourself in the future as well. (There are exceptions!) We should take our schooling seriously, we have to learn this information to be able to function properly in society. (Once again, there are exceptions) There are also life lessons that I personally would rather learb in school, instead of at a job, such as deadlines, having to get along and work with people that you may not get along with, and getting places on time, with what you need. We have a right to ask for help, but the responsibility to ask for it (Thats on Bauers wall, I'd like a cracker:)

i think that obama is right in his speech. i agree that students should be responsible for their education because education is the key to success in the future. if we begin to quit on our school work, we are quitting on our country because we are withholding our potential contributions. we need to set an example now for younger students because if they see us succeed they will want to and this will start a trend in succeeding, which will eventually lead to a more educated and better functioning country.

Everyone has their own individual responsibility to do well in school, because good grades and good education allow people to get better jobs. Getting good jobs should act as an incentive for people to do well in school. The reason getting better jobs is important is beacause good jobs have higher incomes and allows people to participate more in the economy and also help expand the nation's economy.

Education is very important in this day and age. In-N-Out Burger won't even hire someone without a high school diploma. If you don't choose to get a higher education, you could end up in a hard situation later in life. When you are 45 and it comes time for your children to go to college, you want to have money saved up to help them with tuition. If you don't get educated, you probably won't get a very high paying job and won't be able to save much to help them. However, if you choose not to further your education simply because you are lazy, you deserve whatever you get in life.

It helped me realize that I was about to make important decisions for my country. His points about eduction was dead on. Without educations youth and the nation as a whole would not have to tools needed to make good decisions.
