San Quentin Readies Refurbished Death Chamber (Post #12)

The death penalty is a very controversial issue and is in the news again. A brand new death chamber has been recently built at San Quentin Prison near San Francisco at a cost of $825,000. The current economic conditions in the state of California make this expenditure questionable at best. What is your opinion on that matter? There are many others issues surrounding the death penalty like; is this a form of cruel and unusual punishment? Does the state have the right to take a life? Is the death penalty an effective deterrent to violent crime?
Please always respect others and their opinions when you blog.

  1. The death penalty is always in the news, because anything about taking the life of another ends up there one way or another. Normally we are told to believe that killing is wrong, and we should all get along with one another. But this fact is just wrong. Humans killing other humans is a normal part of life, like it or not. Human nature is generally violent until you are tamed by are society. Although some never fit into this category, so they kill others or commit other large crimes. For the people like that, I see no reason to keep them alive. I don't feel like spending money on them, so they can rot in jail for the rest of their life's. If we kill them, then we save money and we can move on with life, instead of wasting are time and money on this type of media and topic.

  2. 825k for a quick solution to problems who cost much more than that to keep alive year to year, it's worth it.

cruel and unusual? to deserve the death penalty you would have had to have done something "cruel and unusual" and done it with conscious choice, i have no qualms about removing those kinds of people from this existence.

right to take life? did they take life? would they continue to cause harm and damage if they were free? if we keep them they cost us money, if they die then they're out of our hair completely its all about weighing opportunity costs, risk or money?

deterrent for violent crimes? you bet! "do this and die" pretty effective if you ask me, short of insanity, there's no excuse to disobey.

  3. I think the reason the death penalty is so contraversial is because we have it drilled in our heads that killing is bad. On the other hand the criminals in the death sentence have probably commited multiple murders or another equally serious crime because for murder its usually from 20 to 30 years in jail. I believe for this reason the state has the right to eliminate individuals who have caused so much harm.if the death penalty is their punishment and its cheaper to do it, then we should. i personaly don't want to waste more tax money than i need to just to feed and clothe the criminals.

  4. This is a form of cruel and unusual punishment, but these criminals were asking for it when they were murdering other people. The state does have the right to take a life when necessary to keep society away from dangerous people who have killed and may kill again if given the oppertunity. The death penalty is effective in preventing violent crime because criminals will know what's coming to them if they commit a severe crime.

  5. i think that if a criminal committed a serious enough crime, then that....bad guy(i would like to use a much stronger word but ya know what i mean)should be put on death penalty. just think if some criminal killed and raped some girl and was just put in jail for 30 or 40 years or whatever...that definately is not what i want. put that low life on death row so he can't get another chance to do something worse.

I feel that the death penalty is an acceptable punishment. If a judge and a jury of a person's peers have decided that the death penalty is what the person deserves, then that should be the end of the discussion. The people should not get to sit on death row for the rest of their lives and die there old men. We as tax payers waste millions of dollars on prison inmates who could be being put to death instead. These are not good people who have done bad things; they are bad people who have done bad things and they deserve the punishment given to them. This is not cruel and unusual punishment, death by electricution is, yes but not death by IV. The drugs that they inject when putting someone to death just make their heart stop pumping in a matter of minutes. Putting these criminals to death just means there is one less violent person on Earth.

  7. The death penalty to many people its a wrong doing. what i think is that if the person killed other people its okay to give them the death penalty, because that person probably killed an innocent person that didn't deserve to die and should be punished. on the contrary California's economy isn't doing so good to be wasting money to build that death chamber.

  8. I do not believe in the death penalty. First of all it is more costly to sentence someone to the death penalty than to sentence them to life in prison. Secondly I do not think it should be up to say whether a person should live or die. Also I believe that the death penalty is a easy way out of life for criminals. If a criminal kills another person then they should live with the consequences their whole life and suffer.

  9. I think that it is ridiculous that a new chamber was made in San Quentin prison for that much money. I think it would be faster and cheaper to get a gallows in a room that is closed off to the public, because it still kills the person but we don't have to waste taxes on new equipment. I don't believe that the death penalty is a cruel punishment, it gets rid of danger in the neighborhood and brings relief to the families who lost a loved one through that criminal. If they don't get taken care of and just get released then they're just going to keep doing what they've been doing. I bet that criminals on death row are not killed by people who enjoy seeing death, but by those who believe in justice. It's difficult to say, but I do think the state has the right to take the life of one who takes lives as a hobby. If the state doesn't stop them, who will? Do we want to have a killer going around and putting our family in danger? I know I don't.

  10. Ok we all know that killing is wrong and that it shouldn't have been done in the first place. Of course if there is someone out there that is killing people then they should be punished. I always thought that they should just be locked up forever because no one should have the right to take a life away. If someone murdered another, it wouldn't be right to be doing the same because it wouldn't make us any better but on the other hand, others think differently because the crime must have been severe. I believe that building a new death chamber is a waste of money because they already have the old one. Why do they need a new one? They both end up executing the prisoner anyway.

  12. I feel like the death penalty is a controversial issue. I feel like certain people should not recieve the death penatly, unless they have commited a serious crime. For example, Scott Peterson is on death row. I believe he is deserving. The death penalty is a form of cruel and unusual punishment, but, there are laws for a reason, so should you not follow the laws? Every wrong doing has a punishment.

This subject will always be a topic of discussion. The $825k spent on a new death penalty chamber was worth it and yes, criminals who are given the death penalty should die because they had to have done something horrible to be there. Life in prison gives them the chance to see the sun, eat, watch TV, talk to their family. This is something the person or people they have killed will never get to do again. The state does have the right to have this type of sentencing, but I think it should be federal law and the same for each state.

I believe that the money used to make a new death chamber should have been spent on something else. Depending on what someone did, then yes, I do believe that the death penalty would be appropriate in some cases. However, states shouldn't focus on killing, but should come up with other ways where justice could be obtained.

I believe that building a new death chamber was worth it. I strongly believe in the death penalty. If people are willing to take the lives of others, then they deserve to die as well. We don't need criminals in our society. Why keep them in jail and waste a jail cell when they could just be killed? If justice isn't served then criminals may keep killing or committing crimes because they know they won't be killed. I do not think this is cruel and unusual punishment. Well if you use electricution then it is, but killing them from an IV isn't. The IV method is a painless procedure; therefore, it isn't cruel or unusual in my opinion. This money spent on a new death chamber was worth it to me.

  19. There's a reason this topic is so controversial! In my head alone I have two completely seperate arguments for each side.
On one hand, my logical mind says that anyone who commits these horrible crimes of taking the lives of others should not be on this planet. W dont need people like this in our society and would be much better off without them. If I had a family or friend who was a victim of murder, I know that I would want the killer dead. I would want to know that the murderer was suffering the consequences of the pain he or she had caused everyone else.
And yet, my morals tell me that this is not our decision as humans. To take someone else's life is not the job of us as humans, it is God's job. This leads me to feel that it would not be morally right for us to make the decision to take the life of another human.
As hard as it is, I just can not fully believe in either side of this argument at this time with the knowledge I currently have, because there are so many arguments to this issue.
As for right now, the economy is in the toilet. Why are we spending our money on this death chamber? Who is this helping? At the present time, let's focus on something else, please.

  24. Prisoners on death row have all committed very serious crimes, and it seems unjust that we give them TV, food, and a bed to sleep in. One of the biggest problems California is facing is an overcrowding of prisons and a lack of funding to control and take care of the number of criminals we punish. This has resulted in many prisoners being put on parole when they would not have gotten out otherwise. The increasing number of parolees is also a burden on parole officers, who have to make sure that these people are no longer being menaces to society. This problem is clearly shown in the kidnapping of Jaycee Lee Dugard by Phillip Garrido, a parolee who obviously should have been in prison, but was allowed to ruin the lives of others yet again. Keeping prisoners alive is pushing other criminals back to the streets, which is the last thing anyone wants.

However, I also believe that people can always change their lives. It is not within the government's authority to decide if one person is worth keeping alive or not. In fact, no one has the authority to decide if a person should be kept alive or not. We all cry for justice, but do we really want justice? How many times have you screwed up and got away with it? Does justice look so peachy now? The prison system is in shambles, but the death penalty is not the solution.

  25. I am a very big believer in a eye for an eye. If someone believes they have the power to take a life, then they deserve something like the death penalty. Now about the new chamber. I don't think that this investment was very smart, just based on the fact that that money could've been used for something else like schools, children, etc. But with the public safety in mind, I am totally for anything that makes Californian streets that much more safe.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Spending all of that money on a new death chamber is very unnecessary as far as I can see. The CNN clip made it seem like the new chamber had more room for friends and family? If a person is undergoing the death penalty, yes we want it to be secure and humane and what not, but there has to be a way to do that in under $800,000.

  27. The death sentence is always a tricky topic to discuss. Personally, I'm not a believer in the death penalty. My biggest fear with this punishment is executing an innocent person. Once an execution is done, there is no turning back. Also, a better punishment I think for a person who committed murder would be to have to live the rest of his/her life with the guilt and to be stuck in jail rather than being put out of his/her misery. The belief I have with the death penalty reflects my opinion of the building of a new death chamber. Our economy is still struggling and the $800,000 used to build the new facility could have been put to something else that is VERY necessary to the United States. It also made me uncomfortable to see that they now have actual seating for people to watch the execution. Although it is strictly for relatives and family (at least I believe I heard in the video), it is odd that the seats are set up like seating to see a play or a baseball game. Maybe there is a purpose to it, but seeing the set up of the new death chamber made me feel very awkward and uncomfortable while watching the video. It is just my opinion, but I think that money could have been put to a project more beneficial to our economy.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the death penalty. If someone has done something horrific enough to deserve that, then so be it. They probably deserve it, to be blunt. I think it's a great way to lower crime rates. Most people really don't want to die... But states should have the right to sentence the death penalty, if someone did something THAT bad in that state, the state deserves to give an equal punishment right back to that person.

  29. I think they really shouldn't have built a brand new death chamber especially now that we basically have NO MONEY. Also having the death chamber sounds cruel. I really don't see the need in having one. Like it's an awful way to torture someone. That's not right either. State doesn't or really shouldn't have the right to take a life. I agree with Kassie Lizama that I have an argument for both sides. If someone I knew was a victim of a murder, I would want the person who committed the murder to suffer. However, I don't believe that taking someone's life is our decision. A little part of me thinks this is sinking down to their level, and killing just like they did. I do not agree on the death penalty either even if a person decided to murder another, I believe that they should be punished by staying in prison for life, because when they kill someone and go to prison but then get the death penalty i would think its the easy way out of the problem. I think they should know how hard it is to be in prison, without the freedom of doing what they want or going where they want, because they had the decision to go one way or the other, and if they decide to take the wrong path then they should face the consequences.

Supposiveley it's because there is not enough room for the spectators to see. Who knew it was an event so many people would want to show up for? The state has the right to issue the death sentence on a criminal who deserves it, but in the case of that they have too make sure that the criminal is indeed guilty of the crime.

I believe that waisting 825k on a new chamber is a bad idea due to our economy. The money should be used for something more wiser to help our economy. On the other hand I do believe in the death penalty and that if someone takes the life of a loved one then their life should also be taken.

When talking about the death sentence the issue of wether its a cruel punishment or not is always mentioned. But i believe that its cruel but is done for a good reason unless the accused was innocent. We must realize that if we kept every person that got the death sentence there would be high tensions and also the jails woulds be full(economy being as it is, would be even worse). Even though its wrong to take a life (only God can). If we did not have the death sentence we would have may criminals running around mostly because not all criminals are going to be little angels and stay put in jail.

First off, there are pros and cons to this new Death Chamber. Cons are the fact that the money spent on this wasnt necessary, when death chambers arent even used twice a year and how much in debt we are. The Pros to this, is how the old death chamber obviously needed more space in it and new accomidations and these were met.

  65. I have no problem with the death penalty. I think that people who are given the death sentence deserve it because they did bad things. The death penalty also saves money, because instead of having terrible people, who committed horrendous crimes, in prison for life and spending money on them every year, they can be sentenced to death and this cuts back on expenses.

  67. I think that the death penalty isn't a good thing. Yes the person may have done something bad like murder but two wrongs don't make a right. 68. Personally, I could go both ways with the issue. For one, I believe if the death chamber continues to be used, on average, only once a year, I do agree that this was a useless expenditure when there's many other things that would have also benefited from such money. However, if we actually start to use the death chamber more, then no, it was a quality investment. I call at an investment as, in the long run, if we give the death sentence more often, then that's less money we will have to waste feeding/taking care of prisoners for the extremely long terms they are to serve. In saying this, I do declare myself a supporter of the death sentence. I do not see it as "cruel and unusual" whatsoever as it is a painless procedure. Additionally, the state should indeed be entitled to take a life of one citizen if he/she took the life of another, but under such circumstances only, nothing less. I believe the death penalty is as effective a deterrent to violent crime as there will ever be. I mean, what more can you threaten someone with than his/her own life? Nothing.

  69. i believe that the death penalty is a good penalty to have. i think that if we executed it more, the crime rates would drop. people commit crimes and think about getting jail time, and possibly getting released early because of good behavior, which must not be that big of a punishment to them if they are committing the crime anyways. but the truth is that almost all of the poeple who have committed serious crimes, such as rape and murder, will commit those crimes again once their released. with all the statistics saying how dangerous these criminals are, why would we ever think about letting them walk free? they should be out of this world so no one will have to suffer because of them again. as for the cost, they probably could have not spent so much, i mean why do these criminals need to be comfortable before they die? but in the long run if this facility begins to function regualrly the cost will even out because we will have less criminals in the jails to pay for because they are being executed or the people are obeying the law because theyre scared of the death penalty. either way, it works out well.

  72. The death sentence is the punishment for taking the life of another... do unto others as you would have done unto you.

As far as expenses go, its all those improvements to make prisons "humane" that is costing us. Nowadays, prisoners are more privileged and taken care of than most US citizens. People who cant support themselves can simply rob a store and get sent to jail for a while. Prisons need to be miserable places for the prisoners, places that give reason not to commit crimes. Stop pampering the prisoners, and there you go, cost problem solved.

Everyone knows they will have to die one day, so those criminals who still choose to do those crimes are obviously not afraid to get the death penalty. I don't have too much to say about whether it is a cruel and unusual punishment, but I feel that it is cruel. It does seem as though there is no other way to stop crimes from happening unless eliminating those who are causing the crimes, which is the death sentence. If it is not going to be used, then why build it when that money could be used to benefit other citizens in need. 88. I beleive the main reason the death penalty is so contraversial is due to the fact that we are tought at a young age that killing is bad. On the other hand the criminals that are tried for the death sentence have probably committed sirious crimes along the lines of murder or even worse. Murder is usually anywhere from 20-30 years or life in jail. For this reason the state has the right to eliminate individuals who have caused such harm to society, if someone is able to take the life of another individual they should recieve the same punishment. If the death penalty is their punishment and its cheaper to do it, then that is what the law should pursue. Why should we waste more tax money on criminals that have no respect for our people it is a waste to feed and clothe the criminals who deserve no rights.

  91. I honestly don't know what I should believe on this topic. It's so sketchy. But I do know that California does not have the money to pay for things like that. If a person has gotten the death penalty why make the "death" area new or nice for them? I don't know, I guess if someone is going to believe in the death penalty they shouldn't worry about what the person is going to be sitting in or whatever when they die. I still don't know if I support the death penalty or not because there are many pros and cons about each side. Too many. It's one of those topics that needs more research. I don't like the idea of killing someone because of the risk of them being innocent. But the message it sends out to people isn't a moral one either. Killing someone for killing someone(or whatever else they did)? That doesn't seem right? But if they aren't killed they'll eat up all the tax payers money because we pay for them to live. So it's so sketchy! Either way it's messed up.

    ReplyDelete
  92. i can understand how this issue can be so controversial. on the one hand, the death penalty is an effective way at eliminating killers and is effective at warning others of the consequences. However, 800,000 is too much money to spend on such a facility for people whose lives are about to end. If you think someone deserves to die for their actions, then why do you think they deserve more space and comfort in their last hours? it just doesn't make sense. also, someone who is serving a life sentence with absolutely no chance of ever leaving is eating up tax payers money. its annoying knowing that criminals have food, clothing, and a roof over their head while good honest people with bad luck are bumming it on the streets trying to make ends meet. on the other hand, who are we to say who lives and dies. That is God's job alone. He is the ultimate judge and i do not think that we were ever meant to take someone elses lives into our own hands.

I believe giving them eternal sleep is giving them the easy way out. Now to think this state is spending money on something so minor compared to our other problems is uneasy. We have so many other uses for that money. I think California needs to shape up.

  127. I do believe that the death penalty is a cruel and unusual punishment. Even though the criminals have done very bad things to most likely innocent people. I believe that they should suffer and face the consequences. And spend a long time in jail. If a person has done something really bad, i believe that for that circumstance they should be punished.

  128. I do believe in the death penalty. In California we spend a lot of time and money taking care of inmates and prisoners. in prison criminals can do many leisurely things such as watching satelite tv, working out in the gym, free meals, all of these things that we california taxpayers are paying for. im not sure if spending 800,000 dollars was the way to go if we hardly use it, but if this means that california actually starts using it then i think it is a wise investment.

  129. From what i've heard, the biggest controversy of the death penalty is taking innocent lives, but realistically, in modern society, it is extremely rare to have an innocent convicted. But the thing people forget, is if they are innocently put to death, if we take away the death penalty, they will just innocently sit in prison the rest of their life...so taking out the death penalty isn't going to solve innocent convictions. As far as spending 825k on a new room... yea that seems a little silly, although its still cheaper than keeping them alive forever in prison...it's still a pretty big expense to make their death easier. Most death row inmates sit on death row for about 10-30 years anyway, so its not like they aren't already a big expense.

  130. I do think the brand-new death chamber is a waste of money. If California only does about one execution every five years, why are tax payer dollars going into that and not books for schools. Executing in general is wrong. The state doesn't have the right to take a person's life. Yes, they took another life, but it's still just revenge. No one deserves to be murdered, even people who kill others. It's cruel and unusual punishment to kill someone, no matter their situation or crime.

I'm very torn when it comes to the death penalty. However, was it necessary to spend allllllllll that money on a place where we're just going to kill people anyway; pretty ridiculous, right?

  132. I think that spending almost a million dollars is way too much. I think that the prison system is too nice on the convicts. They get three meals a day, gym, and health care when needed. I think that spending all that money to kill someone is way too much. Besides who wouldn't want to die in an old funky blue room?

I think that spending $825,000 on a death penatly is way to much. In my opinion i believe that the only reason to kill a human is if they've killed someone themself. Other charges should just be delt with in a prison. The prison criminals are able to do many leisurely things while in prison. So i think they should be more strict on the way the prisoners are living.

  134. I have mixed feelings on the death penalty.
The death penalty is not cruel or unusual.
I personally would much rather die that to live in a jail for my entire life. The criminal feels very little if any pain. It is clearly not cruel.
Unusual? Do we know History? The death punishment is everywhere and in every time. To say its unusual is to say that its unusual water falls from the sky.

Do they deserve it? without a doubt. Is it murder, i do not believe that is is?

On the other hand i believe taking a life is wrong and could never bring myself to actually killing them.
Do i believe the government has that right? yes i do.

in my opinion i see the death chamber as a cruel and unusual punishment. i say california is not in good conditions of money to spend them on bed chambers. why waist the money on that when they could do something that wil help and benefits us and everyone. i no criminals derserve to pay for their attentions but not this way. there is many other ways we could help out. we dont have to kill the criminals.

  137. I believe that there is nothing wrong with the death penalty. The crime should fit the punishment, and some crimes should be punishable by death, such as first degree murder. And the $800,000 used to build the death room thing, isnt much when you consider how much the government has to spend, and shouldnt be a big deal

  138. The death penalty had been used but why would they make a new one and waist so much money on it? That could have gone to something else that our economy needs. My opinion on this is that it is a good idea to have the death penalty for people who have committed major crimes for instance if someone has murdered a family or is a cereal killer then they deserve to have their life taken from them because it wasn’t fair for a family to suffer just because of a certain person who is sick in the head.

  139. My opinion is that if everybody's concern with money, then leave it alone it's just common sense, inmates on death row don't even get executed for years on in, if they wanna save some money just back to hanging.

  141. If the crime that was committed was bad to a certain extent, then i think that it is right for us to put them down. If they kill people, for no reason, then i think they should be pEnalized. the money spent on the new equipment i think was too much for this type of procedure only for the fact that no one has been killed in the death penalty for awhile.

  142. I do believe that death is a natural part of life, in some situations death presents itself in a more cruel way than others, but it happens. I am fine with the death penalty as a consequence of commiting a severe crime. If they say that this is not right for a human to take another humas life, what right do the criminals have when they commit a murder? The same right that we have to issue the death penalty.

  143. I believe that the death penalty shoukd be aloud. The person on the death row must have done something horribly wrong to bne in that seat. It is said that the death penalty is a cruel and harsh punishment. In my opinion those on the death row probably committed a crime worse than the death penalty. I think that people on that death row should be punished this way to keep them from doing it again.

I think that the death penalty should be used more. If we decide to get a better update of the chair, why not send more murders and psychopaths to death? And I believe that if someone has killed or butchered people, they shouldn't be in jail chillin, while we pay taxes for these horrible people. They should be put down like helpless animals. They can have a trial, and people should vote whether they want or do not want them sent to the chair.

  145. My opinion about death penalty,is that i don't is necessary to take someone's life for a crime, there can be different ways to punish that person.I dont belive hat the seath penalty should be the solution.

  146. $825,00??!! really that much was spent on a room with a table in it with straps sriously? We might as well rent a closet and stick a table in it with a life time supply of tape. Its really useless we havn't had someone in line for death penalty in years and i know for a fact it will be a while until someone will commit a crime so serious to reach that point.

  147. I feel that it is a waste of time and money that the money was spent on a new death chamber. Why does the place have to be nicer that the person was sentenced to die in? There are sooo many people on death row. We are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to keep these death row inmates alive. They were sentenced to death by a "jury of our peers" and then they sit on death row for most of their lives. If they were sentenced to die, because of their horrible acts, then they should be put to death. The money we are spending on keeping them alive would get the state of Ca out of debt.

  148. I think the death penalty is the correct path to take for someone who has taken a life him/herself. An eye for an eye makes the world blind, yeah i know. But, wouldnt you learn if you learned how that person lost their eye, and avoid the path that that person took? Just my thought on that. If we were to let them just rot in jail....we would lose prison room and have to spend even more money than it costs to use lethal injection, on new prisons. Kinda foolish with this economy...

  149. As a citizen of California, knowing that our streets are safer because we are getting rid of criminals that deserve the death penalty for a crime they committed is always nice. But the fact that the facility costed $825,000 in our California economy is not nice. If the old death penalty was just as effective, then stick with it. Now our tax dollars will go to an easy death for criminals who are sentenced to a death penalty.

  150. I dont have a problem with death penalties, but to spend almost 100 thousand dollars to refurbish the new one is ridiculous. Like jimmy has mentioned they both do the same thing. It would be sad though if an innocent man was put on death-row. like the movie the GREEN MILE, where the man was put to death at a crime he did not commit. Just thought i shoul mention.

  151. I dont think it is a cruel way to punish the prisoners because they were being cruel when they committed their crimes.

  152. building that death chamber was a waste of money, they sould use it for something else like help the city in some ways or others but the death penalty is really used that much. instead of waitin 5 years to kill someone from big charges. they should just do it the old fashion way.

I think that this was just a waste of money because I dnt think that its right for the government or anybody to take another persons life because God should be the only one with that right. I think also that this is a cruel way of takin a persons life away and it would be better for the people on death row to just be kept in prision for life insted of geting thei lifes taken away.

  154. So we definetely could've used this money for something a little more important..but I do feel the death penalty is necessary...some people call it "cruel and unusual pumishment"....you wanna know whats really cruel and unusual punishment? 155. The death penalty should be banded in all states. there is no need to take someones life. If a person is in jail, they are pretty much dead. They have no life in there. They also don't know if it is cruel punishment and if injection actually hurts the person when they're dying.
