On Tuesday, President Obama gave his second address to K-12 students across the country. Last year, many teachers showed the speech in class and much controversy was made nationwide, with some parents opting to have their students stay home and not watch the event. Watch this year's video below (it's 20 minutes long, so you can jump around to get the idea, speech really starts at about 5:30 in). The written transcript is available if you have video or audio problems. The message again this year is individual responsiblity.
Think about what it means for you as a student. What it means for your younger siblings and cousins, your future children, and those growing up around you who are going to make up the adult population in the future.
Just freely share your thoughts on the topic of what it means to have personal responsibility and the importance of education.
Focus on the words and not so much the person.
I remember watching this on t.v when Barak was talking about how students need to be responcible when it comes down to school. He is right, students need to take education seriously and should do what ever it takes to learn to better the future of all of us. it was a good speech with good intentions for the Students of today.
ReplyDeleteI believe that everything obama said in this speech is true. Students need to be responsible about school because our decisions in life not only affect us but the country as well. I also believe that with effort and hardwork, anybody can be anything that they want to be in life.
ReplyDeleteit is my personal belief that to better the world we live in we must learn about it and understand it. how can you improve a car's design if you know nothing about cars? the more we learn the better we can make the world and ourselves, and it's always up to us to make the decision to learn and succeed.

School is not only important for the world but it is also important to yourself. People today need goals. Whether its losing fifty pounds, gaining twenty for muscles, or whatever. But school and knowledge are the highest goals because anyone can go to a gym. But it takes dedication and time and the will to learn to go to school, get good grades, and make yourself better today to help the world of tomorrow.

School is a must in this country. No If Ands Or Buts about it it is required for every citizin to go to school to get an education and try and expand the worlds Smarts not its minor flaws. Today we have iPhones, ipods, HTC's blackberry's HP, Apple, Dell, Ford, GM, Chevy and many other things that make life A Lot smoother but what about the cancer patients and the pepole that have respiator problems. all the technology we have now isn't nessisarilly helping them out. America needs an education and a strong one at that. We need things to help us live longer and help mother earth not iphones and cadillacs we need machines or medicines to help people get their life back it is what they deserve. So we all must go to school and get our education sop we can be the ones that thrive and become stronger and smarter. not other nations.

This speech that Obama gave had the right intentions to it. However, a lot of people didn't take him seriously. Those people are dumb. School and education is so important in life. Now a days in our society you need a college degree to get a good job. Without one, you probably won't be working at a well paid job. Our economy is depending on us to get out of the mess we are in. Students should take their education very seriously to help our society.
ReplyDeleteGetting and education and going to school is an important part of life. Going to school gives you social skills and ability to achieve goals and reach full potential. An education helps you in the day to day world and with dealing with others.
ReplyDeleteIn order to be successful in life after high school, you need to have an interest in something, learn more about it, and then go do it. You cant just completely ignore every moment of school. Even though it is unlikely everything you learn in school will be used later, it is still good to know certain things.

I think that education is very important to be succesful in life. The world is only getting more complex and the competition from other countries and our own is building. The only way we can compete with them is to earn an education and gain skills.
I believe that President Obama's comments in his speech was right on, especially when he says that an education is the most important thing for the future. This will help America by increasing our human capital, which will help, at least in the future to shift our production possibilities curve to shift to the right, benefiting our economy, and our everyone, because we will have more goods, and thus we will have more money if we trade with other nations. It also benefits the individual, because the more educated that you are, the better jobs you can get, and the more money you can make. So there are two reasons that education is important, number one is that it helps you earn more money, and number two, it helps improve your country's economy.

I think it is good that he relates to many kids on a personal level and isn't shy on saying so. I believe many kids should listen to this speech, despite the length because it is very meaningful and makes people stronger in self confidence.
ReplyDeletePersonal responsibility means doing what should be done whether a person wants to or not and doing whatever possible to reach one's goals. It means making sacrifices for the benefits that come later. Education is immensely important, especially in todays society, in order to get anywhere with a career and improve the world.

His awareness and recognition of having great education is awesome because I believe our education in America needs to be shapened up a bit at the public level. Students need to realize that they truly are the future of this country. Obama is right when it comes to his thoughts on our behalf. It's our responsibility to fully give it our all when it comes to learning and understanding in our environment. Education is a key subject when it comes to life. As someight say, you truly do learn something new each day. Obama's speech clearly made a point, in my opinion. I sincerely believe that if we put our minds to it, we can accomplish a better future for all of us, young and old.

This was actually a very good speech from our president. He pretty much narrowed it down on how to be successful with our lives and how we should be determined in ourselves. He really got to me when he said we are all capable in achieving our goals and succeeding in life. None of us are not capable of doing so. Everyday my dad tells me to work hard and make the effort so I can get a diploma, get a great well-paid job, and make good decisions for myself. President Obama also mentioned about treating others the way you want to be treated. Now that is the golden rule in life because if we don't treat others good, what possibility will you have that those people and others will treat you good? How will you achieve in getting a good job and making goals for yourself if your not going to treat other people good? Treating others the way you want to be treated helps our society flow in a good direction and everybody need to learn that. Never give up during your high school career. If you don't get a diploma, certificate, GED, whatever, from high school, how will you ever find a great job in life? You would pretty much work in a place that gives you less than minimum wage, if lucky, or you go on the streets begging for a home, food, money, etc. Those people didn't try and were lazy and I know for sure that I'm not going to be one of these people. I care about myself and my future and everybody should think the same way too. Get your diploma, go to college if you choose to, get a good job, and live your life to the fullest. High school passes by pretty quick for us teenagers and try to make the best of those 4 years for you, your friends, and especially your family.

What I think about this is that that was still during the time that Obama was outrageously popular because of his race and that it wouldn't have been shown to students if he was white, but it still would have if it had been a female president, it was only shown, from what i had seen, by either the teachers that are really into politics enough to watch every one with their class, which i doubt happened in any classes except for government classes; but more so by the teachers that are glad to see a black man in the presidency.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Obama's point that the success of a student truely depends on how much work that student does. In real life, practice really does make perfect. The longer you work at something, the better you will be at that skill. I know for myself that even trying to take up sports is quite a challenge at times. I play tennis and I know that compared to the first day I went to a beginning tennis lesson compared to today at my advanced tennis lessons, I would seen as a completely different player. My skill as an athlete came from three years of hard work and dedication to practicing tennis. Obama also made a point that being intelligent does not necessarily put a person a head of everyone else. I find this to be INCREDIBLY true, especially in the school system. I know many people that are a lot smarter than I am, but they have worse grades than I do because they do not do their homework whereas I do. The only way to learn to actually try. In the real world, a person needs to try at their job otherwise they'll risk losing it. The only real way to be successful is through effort. I think President Obama is sending a great message through his series of educational speeches.

You only get as much out of something as you put in, so if you don't put any effort into your own education you shouldn't expect to succed as much as others who do work hard. I believe that every word Obama just said in this video is very well said in the way that it motivates students in any level, being a 1st grader or a 12th grader in becoming someone better in life and to have a greater future. The thing is that one has to know how to apply it to their own life and situation. I do agree with him that each one is responsible for their own future, and to have that future that many desire to have can not come so easily without education. I think that people should make the right decision and keep doing the right thing with the education and not stop until the end. Like Obama said it, that if you quit on your education its not only quiting on yourself its quiting the on the whole country because soon its going to be us out there in the world, and there should be people who know how to give a good example to the ones to follow. I really think that if one wants to be something important in life they should keep up the hard work to get the results you want. Nothing comes easy in this life, it only comes with the effort and then the success will come. One has to at the least try, and keep trying untill one gets the neccesary. If one wants to reach a goal keep trying never say "I can't" because everyone has something there good at, and with that little thing they know how to do and enjoy they can turn it into their career like being a dentist, teacher, or even a president. Nothing in this world is impossible, unless you try.

In his address to students, Obama brought up a point of which I strongly agree with and have been trying to convey to my peers ever since I can remember. One of my biggest frustrations in my life is when, regarding school, if I score well on a test, etc., I have someone tell me that I am "lucky" when in reality, luck has nothing to do with it. It's all about hard work and not about "luck" whatsoever. Unfortunately, as I have grown older it seems that I am relying more on my "luck" than anything. In the past, I used to be one of the most dedicated, hard-working students and have steadily been navigating a down hill slope since my freshman year. As I have experienced a steady drop in my GPA as well, the idea has proved itself to me that it really is hard work that brings upon success and not "luck." I hope that my peers, as well as myself, can find the drive within to be self disciplined and be the most hardworking and therefore successful Americans that Obama wishes us to be as well as what we owe to our own future to be. Generations before us have done their part, now it is our turn to do ours.

As said in the video, working hard on education is crucial for the future. It is our responsibility to study, get good grades, and then get into college (if it is what we want to do after high school). What Obama is saying, is all completely true, I and agree 110%. The people that surround us in school, are the future President, or Secrutary of defense. It's really sad to say, but that scares some older folks. The way you represent yourself in school, is most likely how you'll represent yourself in the future as well. (There are exceptions!) We should take our schooling seriously, we have to learn this information to be able to function properly in society. (Once again, there are exceptions) There are also life lessons that I personally would rather learb in school, instead of at a job, such as deadlines, having to get along and work with people that you may not get along with, and getting places on time, with what you need. We have a right to ask for help, but the responsibility to ask for it (Thats on Bauers wall, I'd like a cracker:)

ReplyDeleteEducation is important. It is the future. It is what seems to be the only thing that is able to succeed in hard lives like ours. With education, in my opinion, you gain money. Money is essential.

I believe students do need to be responsible with their school attitude because it not only effects our life, but also the country in what jobs we get and how much money we can make. With effort and hardwork, anything can be achieved, you just have to want it enough.
ReplyDeleteResponsibility is a valuable characteristic in life . It is good that it is practiced among younger children in elementary school and even better when in high school . Responsibility makes a person dependable and trustworthy of handling jobs such as a business or group projects . It is a trait that will get you somewhere in life and it's great to have a president value the meaning of responsibility .
ReplyDeleteI think that our education is important and it can impact our future in many ways. For almost any job you will need a high school diploma. I liked how obama took time to speak out to the younger audience. I believe our students could improve alot more in school if we all really tried.
ReplyDeleteI believe what Obama says is very true. As an individual our choices now will affect our future on account of we are the future.

yes i believe in what obama is saying.. all students should be good in school becuase with out education then most of the poeple put in the world wouldd be poor or isnt living the life they wanted to live
i beleive that what obama is saying is all true. kids need to go to school to get a good education and actually become somebody of importance one day. if you study hard and beleive in your dreams... you can go any where you want in life.
ReplyDeleteHe is right its the students responsiblity to attend school and up to them to excel in it. Who does the work in school , the student does. Why should this be put on the parents for these students dropping out . Thats just nonsense. The students are in control of "their" future not their parents. jordan elzie per 2 sloan
ReplyDeleteWhen President Obama says that education is the most important part of our future, I believe he is completely correct. Having our future generation be well-educated means a better society for everyone, as well as more opportunities for those directly affected. If students today are not well-educated, we will not be able to move forward as a nation, and all the progress we have made will slowly fall behind, as our citizens fall behind.

I think that Obama's speech was true. Students need to start getting more serious and focused on our education. Our education does affect our country, and in the future we will see how importnat it truly is. I think that students really need a wake up call because many dont really care for school. They should have shown this speech to us at school.
Ryan thinks that the speeches presidents give tto students can help cause most of them have to go though hard schooling in college and many people are inspred by people in power telling them to so things to get a better education. I think the parents who wanted there kids out during this want there kids to not succed cause they didnt. Ryan only thinks that the students if bush was saying this would get more stupid since bush isnt really bright. But ryan thinks speaches like this are insperational and help overal and get kids to focus on school to get somewhere in life.

ReplyDeletei higly agree with what president obama said in this speech.i believe that us students should be responsible to learn more and bring our lives a better place and make this country a better place.
School is life training. It is important because it gives you the oppurtunity to be educated and take that advantage into the world and make yourself or the world different. Notice i said it is an opportunity. Whether you choose to do well in school is on you, but it may determine where you'll go in life. It will also affect the government if you were to become part of it. Education is serious, and it's your repsonsibility for how it makes you.
ReplyDeleteSo agree with Obama.

I think a speech like about education to young kids by our President is important and everyone should watch with their kids. Education is important for all of us at any age and you are never to old to learn. Getting an education is the main part of going to school, but learning how to deal with all the other parts of life are part of school too. We are all responsible for our education and our goals.
ReplyDeleteI liked the part of Obama's speech last year when he said that dropping out is also quitting on your country. When the founding fathers were establishing our government they said that the effective functioning of a democracy depends on citizen virtue and people doing their best, giving their best, and being active participants. This is what the president was encouraging kids to do.
ReplyDeleteThe president does have a point and everything he said in the speech is true. If us, as kids and teenagers fail to succeed our country will fall apart. We have to try harder in school because its what prepares us for our future.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Asher Maroot, you need to be interested in something to be successful in life after high school, the same goes for being in high school. Students do need to be responsible while in high school to do good, but it would be easier if they were interested in what they were learning.
ReplyDeleteI believe that everyone should take responsibility in their education. Everyone is smart and has the ability to learn, it's whether you choose to that's the problem. People of today need to step up their game and work harder to get their education. Everyone has the capability to learn, even with learning disabilities! It is your choice to learn, and I believe everyone should make the right choice.
ReplyDeleteI believe President Obama's speech was very true. You control your own future and no one else. Our society is depending on us to help fix up our economy. To have a good future you need to get an education. Without an education it will be hard to go somewhere in life. Businesses are looking to hire people that went to college and have a degree. It's best to stay in school and go to college so you can achieve what you want in life.
ReplyDeleteI love that Obama is putting a little bit of pressure of students to take their education into their own hands. He is completely right: times are hard. However, our future is in our own hands, and if we put in the effort and dream big, anything is possible. I think that it is very smart for Obama to encourage the students of this country because someday we will make up the adult population, and we will need to have gained all the information we are learning right now and the year to come. We are all each responsible for our own individual futures, and for the future of our country.
ReplyDeleteEveryone says the children are the most important generation, and if they are uneducated then society will soon follow. Without education how can we expand economically, politially or culturally?
ReplyDeleteI think President Obamas speech was great. I believe that we do need to stay in school to be educated well and succeed in life. Everyone is responsible for their actions and what they choose to do. If you choose the right path you will be going towards a successful life!

School is the microcosm for the entire world.Of course it is important to take responsibility of your life and not rely on others to do what you need to do. The harder you work and succeed in school, the more likely you will work hard and succeed in life. Your life does not begin after high school. What you do now will mirror what you will do later in your life.

School is such an important part of life for everyone. We go to school to get an education and to ultimately achieve our dreams in the future. President Obama's speech is very inspirational to me, and many other students just like me. His message to all young people out ther K-12 is that our future depends on our education. The way you and your family will live in the future depends on you education. If you strive to the top and educate yourself your country as a whole will become a better one. Your siblings will see you as a role model, and will strive for their education.
ReplyDeleteObama's speech was very strong to everyone in K-12. It's up to us to keep this nation still strong and also it's up to us to make this nationg better. we have the responsibility to learn, for later on in life give back to your country everything that it gave you.

In my opinion if a school were to have a big drug and weapon problem then they should have checks because this could be harmful to students and teachers. Also with the random car checks I don’t think that should really be necessary unless they are able to get a warrant or the students parent permission.

Students should care about school because this will greatly effect them in the future. This also helps the entire country if you learn more in school. A smarter person has more to offer to his or her country and can potentially have a great effect on our country.
ReplyDeleteObama said in his speech is true: everyone is responsible for their own future. Without proper education however your options are very limited and teens and young adults must realize that they are the future adults and the choices they make in school reflect on America. You shall aslo work hard to achieve your goals.
ReplyDeleteSchool an education is very important for kids and teens even adults its better to make sure students and citizens learn a lot in school because later on when your out in the world you will be able to get a job you like instead of being clueless and not knowing what to do and it also helps you with college.
