Rep. Rangel Guilty of Breaking 11 House Rules (Post #24)

Yesterday New York House Of Representatives member Charles Rangel walked out of an house ethics hearing in which he was found guilty of almost all the charges against him for all sorts of financial issues from misspent campaign donations to accepting vacation gifts (see article here). He has no plans of stepping down and was just re-elected for his twentieth term by a huge margin. At what point should a politician step down? How many mistakes will the voters accept? Are these just political shenanigans? What do you think? Is Rangel an extreme example of what voters will accept or have the voting public's standards dropped so much?

  1. I really don't know what people were thinking when they re elected him. I believe that Represenatives should be allowed to serve as long as the voters let them, but if they make as many mistakes as that, then stepping down would be the right answer. However, it is still up to the voters. It just shows us how much the public voting standards have dropped.

  2. Re-electing Charles Rangel was obviously not a good thing to do as he was found guilty for various issues. I think Rangel should have stepped down because it just shows the people that our politicians can be corrupt. He sets a bad example for politicians. This was his 20th term which probably means he has a good number of faithful voters who will vote for him to win office no matter what he does, even if he is found guilty. I strongly believe that this is just an extreme example of what voters will accept.

  3. Were these issues brought to light before the election? What were these people thinking when they reelected him? He needs to resign and his failure to do so is basically saying that the rules and regulations made to stop corruption are meaningless to him. He is putting himself above the law, which should never happen, especially if we are expecting him to lead our country.

  5. I believe that Rangel needs to step down. He probably is in a district where the voters see that they are being forced to pick their poison. They either choose Rangel who is a democrat who now is tarnished because of his corrupt actions, and a republican with views that they do not agree with. Rangel should not force his constituents to make this difficult decision, because of this, I am not disappointed by the voters for his re-elction, I am disappointed by Rangel.

I cant believe the people re elected this man. Rangel is obviously not worried about what he does since he has been found guilty for several issues. if these facts were released before the election then im shocked. if they were released after the election, then Rangel should just step down. he needs to worry about the problems he has right now. i really hope he wont be re elected next time because he basically thinks he can get away with anything. by re electing him, were telling him he can keep making mistakes and wont get punished. i think Rangel should just step down and handle his personal problems.

  7. I don't see how it would be safe to have a member of Congress re-elected into the House of Representatives after committing a number of financial violations. It would be one thing if Rangel did something very minor, however it sounds like Rangel participated in behavior that threatens the stability of the House of Representatives. I don't know why people would want to elect someone with House conduct violations, but if a person breaks the codes of the House of Representatives, they should not be allowed back into their position.

  8. I think Charles Rangel should step down if he's not doing what he's suppose to and not using money correctly. If people know he does these things, I don't know why they keep voting for him. This just shows that the people don't care about themselves or the future if they continue to let him make mistakes.

  9. It is a sad reflection of society if this man was reelected even with the complete disregard of eleven house rules. If I had voted for Rangel, I would be embarassed. It's true he has no intention of stepping down, but aren't there consequences for what he's done? How is it acceptable for him to break these house rules and still hold office? I think if he does not step down of his own accord, he needs to be removed from office.

  10. Randel should be made to step down if he doesnt voulntarly, His actions are a disgrace to politicians in general and give them a bad reputation. He needs to be made an example of to politicians everywhere and that you cant just get away with this kind of stuff with only a slap on the wrist.

  11. A politician should step down when they know or feel for sure that they won't win another election. I really don't know how many mistakes voters will accept, depends on how good the politician looks to them and how much they don't pay attention to issues. I think it is just political shenanigans. Some politicians are just playing a game of popularity and some people don't care enough to do something enough. I feel that the population of America is loosing smarts, which is not good.

  13. I think a politician should step down after breaking rules. Rangel is 80 years old. I think it's about time for him to step down and let someone else take over. As for the public voting, I think their standards have dropped if they are willing to let someone stay in office that has broken rules. People only do what they know they can get away with. If the public is letting something like breaking eleven rules just go, then we're in in trouble.

  14. There are rules and laws which should not be broke. As a politician he believes he can get away with it and it is not right. He is not special and he broke the laws it is time to step down. As for the voters, they should not stand for it. Standards are being dropped if we are voting people back in that are going against their own people. Maybe it is just because they know the name but it is not right in my opinion and it is time for him to move on.

Though Rangel has done many bad things the public still supports him and that is a mistake that will ultimately cost them. People should take the charges that he was found of much more seriously and realize that if he is guilty he should not be re elected. Most definitely it is not political shenanigans and if a government official manages to get away with these types of things then why shouldn't the public believe that they can do the same. He should be ashamed of his actions and step done from his position, but ultimately he can only decide that himself, or the people(which don't seem to care). It is sad that the people have such low standards but like i said before that can only affect them the people.

  17. This man should not be in office for what he has done. There should also be a limit to the number of terms a person can serve in congress or else people like Rangel will be able to serve for half their lives or more. Something must have gone wrong, or voters have low standards becuase it is not logical for voters to want a representative who has broken so many rules to remian in office.

However, if the voters were unaware of Rangel's wrongdoings and he has no intentions of stepping down, aren't there still other consequences for flagrant rule breaking??

It just looks bad for them and for Rangel as well, in my opinion.

  31. In my opinion Rangal got what he deserved. I am not really involved with politics too much, but all I know is that it all revolves around money. These days only candidates with money make it anywhere. All voters have been voting for people with money. Rangal is probably not the only man in the white house who has over spent money the way he did. It is not fair to the people who donate the money or for citizens to vote for a man who spends money on vacations.

  33. Personally I think he probably won because of his image and party. When we look at who won and why it's really important to look at the views of the population voting. Maybe the population was highly democratic, since he is, and wouldn't even give the republican candidate a chance. Everyone should know that a politician wont step down, well in most cases. But people are blind at whats really happening because they don't have time to watch whats going on in the world of politics. They just go in, see the democrat on the ballot and vote that way. I would know just by phone banking and asking people who they are voting for and get a response like "oh i'm voting for the democrat. i don't like republicans" or visa versa. Many people in our society vote just based on the party. And that's America's problem, ignorance that the "enemy" might actually be right.

  37. The guy is obviously doing something right/good if he has been reelected for the past 40 years. Taking into account the accusations against him, however, whatever he is doing to get reelected may be shady or even illegal. I find it funny how Rangel said that he hoped "that the full committee will treat me more fairly and take into account my entire 40 years of service to the Congress before making any decisions on sanctions"(http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40190465/ ns/politics-more_politics). How long he has served should not be a factor when deciding a punishment because if he did something unethical, many of those years of "loyal" service may not have been so great after all. If Rangel's 40 years as Representative are counted in the trial, if anything they should be counted against him, signaling that it's about time he retired and let someone run his job ethically. 38. I think that Rangel was wrong in not resigning. In doing this he is saying that he does not care about rules and regulations. If people knew that Rangel was breaking rules, and then they elected him, then he probably won't step down because he was already elected. Maybe one or two things done wrong could be considered mistakes, but after doing at least 11 wrong acts, then the politician should step down. People who commit crimes should not be allowed to run for office or stay in office.

  82. I think politicians should be able to run for as many terms as they want if there is no term limit. If the people think they are the best choice for that office. People seem to be tolerating more and more for ploiticians because they think that lying and cheating is the norm.

  83. I believe that if a person if accused of wrongdoings that no matter how many years they have served, they should step down nevertheless. We don't want any corruption in our government as much as we can help it. It only makes sense. If he/she does not do this willingly, voters should most definitely take it into their own hands to deal with the situation and vote them out ASAP.

  85. I believe that if a politician does even one single, illegal act, then they should be forced to resign. They are supposed to represent the people and do what's best for them, but instead he went and misused money and broke rules for his own personal gains. There's also so much corrupt in the government right now that people have drastically dropped their standards for politics. It's pretty sad that the people that we're supposed to look up to for help and reform in our society are a bunch of corrupt and greedy people.

  87. wow that's terrible. bad men should not be leading us. if this guy was so weak as to get involved in illegitimate money schemes, then why do we expect him to have to strength to be a member of the house? we don't. is there no way to have him removed? that's sad if there isn't. just completely sad.

ideally he would do the honorable thing and step down. but he's acting like a 3rd grader and is too stubborn to lose the game. what a weenie.

  88. I believe that politicians are somewhat "role models" so they should be setting an example for the country and the area they live in. Just because they are well known doesnt mean they get to do illegal things. They need to be responsible for their actions and held accountable as everyone else is.

I believe that any politician who is guilty of any crime should step down immediately. They are a public figure and should be setting a good example for the rest of the nation. I would hope that the voters are outraged by this. They put their trust in him and he let them down. If they were to re-elect him again that would just be ridiculous. They shouldn't have the option of re-electing him at all, he should be removed from office and barred from ever running again.

its sad to think that hes the candidate people want since hes had varius mistakes. but i dont think people want this i think alot of the voters dont do enough research before they vote or their not as involved in this category of the election to know what going on. i believe that if he isnt stepping down they should remove him because after all sometimes the gov should do things not all voters will agree on for the good on the nation.

I believe that as voters it is are responsibility for putting him back after all of his flaws. If he was messing up previously then we should have ended him then. If I were him, I would not step down if the people were going to put me back in office time after time.

  93. Rangel used his power to his advantage.A buliding designed to be a campaign office was used for residential purposes by Rangel. He failed to report income to the IRS from a unit he owned in a Dominican Republic resort. My biggest concern is why he was re-elected? IT shows that our voters are not as informed as they should be.This is not good. Rangel should resign however, it seems as though he won't.

  95. I think he shouldn't have been re-elected. There should be a time limit to run in this position because not everyone will want the same person handling the job. In my opinion he should have stepped down the moment he began this scandle. It's such a shame because people actually still voted for him. He should have thought about his plans more clearly. Because obviously this just shows that he doesn't care about his social position and what others think of him.

I believe that Regal should step down, he made many mistakes and was found guily. Our country as a whole should not have someone like that have an power at all, even if the people still want him there. A restless person like that can really do some damage.

its hard to believe that people will continue to reelect Rangel. he isnt worried about his actions since he has been found guilty for many issues. if these facts were released before elections and people still gave him the vote, thats just shows how citizens act today. if they were released after elections then he needs to be the mature man and step down. i cross my fingers that he wont be re elected next time because he thinks he can get away with this and thats wrong. we shouldnt allow him to think this is okay.

I think that Charles Rangel issue is just another issue. people make mistakes expesuly when their under presure. i dont have the knolage if this happend before or after he was elected but the majority of the people have chose him and he has been re-elected many times so i dont think this would be such a big issue. i think that a politition should step down when the people electing him belive it is time.

I am shocked that Rangel got re elected. If this is the 20th term he is serving and he is just now being convicted of all these crimes, think about years in the past the things he could have done. If this information was posted before the election i am shocked that people still supported him. I believe he should step down because everyone knows what he did was unjust.

  102. i think people voted for him again because simply on how the stuff were before, maybe from the mistakes it was still good and going. and they decided to vote again and also because they liked him, maybe he was friendly? but when it goes to far and more mistakes are done. take em out because he simply didnt learn from his mistakes

  103. If Rangel was found guilty for all these rules broken then i dont see why they didnt resign him on there own. I dont see why people would want someone like Charles in office anyways. And Charles probably wont resign on his own because he probably is corrupt and want to use his power for bad things.

  104. To be honest if someone like Rangel has been breaking rules i think he should be resigned and he shouldnt get any chances of being slapped on the hand because then all hes going to do is constantly mess up, some people just dont always learn from their mistakes.

I think that he should step down because of what he commited and this should set an example to the people because they should get an idea to think twice next time they vote because you never know what could happen maybe that person could be nice but than commit something bad like how this person did.

Really people need to start paying attention to who they vote for. I honestly believe people should give congressmen 2 strikes, that's enough to decide if they should stay in term. If they keep accepting the issues then the congressmen will just continue and think it's okay to make mistakes
