Conflict in the Koreas (post #25)

In 1953, an armistice was signed to end the fighting of the Korean War.  The two nations share a history, ethnicity, and language, but are separated by a heavily patrolled border and two very different governments.  The U.S. has accused the North of seeking to build nuclear weapons and has bases in South Korea and Japan.  The North has strong relations with China, today the world's other superpower, besides the U.S.  Their leader Kim Jong-il's has named his son, Kim Jong-un, as the next ruler.   Last Tuesday, North Korea attacked a South Korean island killing four and forcing an evacuation.  No further fighting has occurred, but tensions are high and other countries could become involved.  The North has one of the world's largest militaries and far exceeds that of South Korea.  Read this link for more info or watch the video and then answer the question below.

If North Korea were to attack again, what position should the United States take?
Consider, we are friends and trading partners with South Korea and Japan and are their main military protector.
North Korea has tested nuclear weapons and may be capable of short range attacks.
China is allied with North Korea and assisted them against us in the Korean War.
We are still fighting in Afghanistan (which also borders China) and have troops in Iraq.
Wars are expensive and we have a large budget deficit.
Explain why you believe we should be involved or not and in what way.  Remember human lives are at stake in any war, both U.S. soldiers and citizens of other nations, so be considerate in your comments.

  1. the U.S. will probably intervene in the affairs of North Korea in the hope of preserving our economic interests in South Korea.

i personally do not believe in war, i do not believe it is necessary or the only way, but it is the way the world chooses to solve its problems. in that context i would say we should be involved in the protection of innocent South Korean lives, and the the preservation of peace, even though one of the main motives of our actions would in most cases be economic at heart.

in a nut shell: yes to involvement, in the effort to protect lives and maintain peace.

  3. If it were up to me to make the decision either to go to war with North Korea, risking U.S. lives and the possibility of Chinese involvement, or to not take the chance, I would not go to war. Simply because we are already fighting a war in Afghanistan, and two different wars at once is probably not a good idea considering our budget deficit and American lives at hand.

I don't believe that the United States should get involved if the situation gets worse. However, the United States will probably become involved because of our ties with South Korea and Japan. I also don't believe getting involved would be a good idea because of the financial problems we are facing, and war is expensive. We are still fighting in Afghanistan and have a huge deficit, so getting involved would not be very smart in my opinion.

  7. I do think the U.S needs to get involved, North Korea needs to be put back in place. They violated the armistice and must suffer the consequences and if that means U.S involvement so be it.

  8. I would be a little hesitant before involving the United States in South Korea. Yes, they may be an economic ally. However, this sounds to me a little too much like the Korean War which went on for years and years and ended up being a loss and an extremely unpopular war. We are still at war in the Middle East. Another war would cost the United States more money and more lives. In its current condition, I do not believe that our country needs to become involved in this dispute.

  9. Well, undoubtedly China will take any opportunity it deems worthy to bring the United States even farther under its control...
However, North Korea is nothing but a little bully, and if it is not put in check it will continue to attack South Korea to its liking. I assume that Kim Jong Il, due to his illness, is attempting to fulfill his dreams of power before he dies, and that China is using his ambition as a tool for its own gain, like a scapegoat.

Although the war in Iraq has been costly, we know that if we the citizens put forth a full effort rather than just procrastinating and wasting so much time, effort, and supplies, and work like we did during WWII, the economy would not be harmed but rather benefit like it did in WWII. A successful war effort is determined by how fully the president chooses to support it through his actions, and in this case President Obama is unwilling to make a stand against seemingly all countries that are not our allies.

I believe the US should put naval pressure on the North Koreans without violating any NK or Chinese boundaries, and simply make South Korea a very difficult place to attack. We need time to crack down on terrorist groups in the Middle East before we create a whole new front.

I really hope that if it is posible, that we can stay out of this. We are still in another war in the middle east that Obama said he would be ending but hasn't. We are stuck between a rock and hard place no matter what side we choose, because even deciding to not choose side is choosing a side.

  13. North Korea is a broken record with an insane leader. They do not have the money or resources to fund a full scale war against Nato and SK. If NK were to attempt a full scale attack, it is our obligation to intervene. We have over 28,000 troops stationed in SK and also have funded to modernization of the SK military. On the side note of NK's nuclear program, this should have been stopped early on and the UN is to blame for not enforcing more punishment. When Iran does the same thing, will we react similiar? I hope not. There is no guarentee China would back NK like it did in 1953. They are aware of this rogue countries irresponsible actions and want little to do with it. It is worrying however that they have taken little action against it. All in all SK still needs the firm support of the US, UN, NATO, and it's allies against this Communist regime. If a war occured, NK in the future would be better off due to a liberation of the country which is full of poor, starving people oppressed and indoctrinated by their government. SK is the rightful owner of the Koreans and our support is in our own and the world's best interest

We already have other issues such as the ongoing war in the Middle East and the recession that we as Americans are going through. It would would be a very poor decision to get involved in a confrontation with another foreign country. The US government needs to realize that it can only do so much inthe world and sometimes we need to let things play out before we make any rash decisions.

The United States should in no way shape or form get involved with the continuation of the Korean War. We tried before and we have not seen an end to this war. The Korea's signed a armistice which is a end of fighting but not an end to the war. I believe that this war will never be over. I'm afraid to say this but by the end of the year or mid next year the Korea's will be yet again in war with each other. I have to wonder what America will do though. Do we go agains a country the could possibly have nuclear weapons and is backed by China, the country that owns more than half of America? Why would America do that? More than 75% of the goods that we Americans buy is "Made in China". From our iphones, computers, backpacks, pencils and most of our clothing. I find it hard to believe that America would continue this war and fail again. We have almost a 14 trillion dollar debt in this country. I would be very angry if our federal government put us in another front where we shouldn't belong just like Iraq, Afghanistan and anywhere else America may wrongfully be. Along with that we have modernized the Japanese and South Korean armies. Why can't we cut the umbilical cord and let these countries be their own nations and let them lead the way they lead. Not with the American "Big Brother" looking over their shoulder but as free people. On the other hand we as American need to regroup, bring our country together from our gridlock and political party hatred, and finally do something as Americans. Not Democrats, Republican, Greens and Libertarians but as Americans.

I believe that the U.S. should not take no position in the war between South and North Korea, because there is already other issues that should concern the U.S. more tan Korea, even though they are friends and trading partners. Another reason wyh I think that the U.S. should not take part in this because Korea is trying the nuclear weapons, knowing that they will not affect only one place, but the world as a whole, sooner or later. The U.S. is not making the right decision to help Korea with their war because China is involved, while we are bordering China. While also people their are at risk of dieing, not only soldiers but the citizens themselves. Plus the wars are very expencive, with the money the U.S. has, I think should be for other things that need it like the education or health of children, and with the economy being not so good it makes it worse.

We signed the alliance with South Korea almost fifty years ago under a different president and in accordance to a completely different generation of citizens. It would be much too costly to fight a superpower combination of North Korea and China as well as whoever else might become involved. Plus, we already have our own conflicts going on. A war with anyone right now would be a horrible idea. If it did come to war between the Koreas, our best bet would probably be to provide them with supply and other aid; just not soldiers or anything too costly.

No, there is no need to begin another war, especially with the Economic advantage China has on us (which is that they hold a majority of our bonds and can drop us at any moment bankrupting us). I think we could at least evacuate or put up stronger defense lines along the border to protect from incoming attack. Now considering the parties involved, the us can't go against China because they are our greatest supplier of goods and money (loans). On the other hand we can't go against S. Korea because then the war would be won before the start because China,N. Korea and the US all havebetter militaries than S. Korea. Nuetrality would mean the US would just stand by while S. Korea is conquered by N. Korea. This is a tuff desition but Nuetrality seems the best option. But even if the U.S decides not to go to war or get involved, we cant help what happens with the other countries where there's many tensions and if something happens over there we wouldnt resist not to get involved even if we have a budget and many civilians lives, including soldiers, are at risk. We have to consider the fact that anything can cross borders and if north korea sides with china, one of the world powers that have successfully tested nuclear weapons, we would have to take that into consideration as well. so its hard to tell what the next step for the U.S is going to be

I believe that North Korea is just throwing out threats. North Korea has done things like this in the past to get other country support to fund them and help their military causes. Depending on what are government decides to do could also be a large factor. I don't believe that the US is in danger in any way, because we are an anchor for most country's and are paying back are det to others. As far as the testing goes, it is not a first time they have started testing for a pointless reason other then to gain suport.

We’re China’s number one market, and they hold a significant amount of our debt. If hostilities erupted on the Korean peninsula, China would have to chose between the cost of upsetting Kim Jong Il versus the cost of losing their biggest market and having us negate on 3/4 of a trillion dollars in US federal debt. North Korea poses a threat, however, it is not hard to recognize the insanity of the leader and i do not think other nations have failed to realize the same thing. 73. We are allies with South Korea, and since we are allies we should help them when they need it. I do not think we can afford to launch a full scale war on North Korea at this time, but we absolutely could and should aid in the defense of South Korea. In addition to defense, we should run Special Forces operations in North Korea if it comes to fighting. Special Forces are extremely effective and compared to a War cheap.

China would get P.O.'ed if we crossed the border in North Korea to invade it, given they are allies. However, China is not opposed to a unified Korea, as can be found in the recent Wikileaks documents. It would create economic opportunity and more safety for them if this were to occur.

Essentially i believe we should aid in the defense of our ally if the need arises. Our countries are friends. If your friend was getting beat up by a giant scary person, would you sit bacvk and yell "can't we all just talk about this over a cup of green tea?"? no. you wouldnt because you know that is completely hair-brained and not in the realm of possibility. You would leap at the chance to defend your friend. Countries should do the same for each other.

Well for now they should not get involved into the war. Instead of getting involved through war they should try to become involved by making the nations come together to fix their problems. What is impressing though was how China as mentioned wanted to become the mediator between the south and the north. Also they gave a good idea of all the nations of China, Soviet Union, South Korea, North Korea, and U.S. coming together to fix the problems. Also this would be good because all of these nations can stop the shed of blood and money by not making a war. We as a country are not in the best position and maybe if the south really needed help then we should get involved, but if they can handle it then just let them do their own thing.

I believe that war can be necessary to maintain peace, however ironic that may sound, and that with our strong military we should help other countries in need. There are innocent people in South Korea that don't deserve to be caught up in all the conflict of North/South Korea, but I think that we need to be more concerned about our own citizens' lives at this point. It sounds a little selfish as I say that but I can't see bringing troops home from one country just to send them into another right away. If things get too out-of-hand in South Korea we may need to step in and assist, but for now we should give the fighting a rest.

Back when Iraq actually had an army they went down fast, anyways. With North Korea, they have a big army sure. But I'm pretty sure America has a huge military force too, and could take them down. The only way I think we'd lose is if China stepped in and was on the North's side. But, I don't think they will, because they'd lose their largest group of consumers, us. I think China is smarter then that...

North Korea has done similar things in the past only as a "scare tactic". The U.S. has already given North Korea billions of dollars over the past fifteen years due to these kinds of tactics. As long as North Korea doesn't use nuclear weapons, the U.S should only try to relieve tension between North and South Korea.
