Cheerleader Suspended Over Facebook Photo (Post #23)

Should a high school administration suspend a cheerleader over a picture of her at a wedding with a beer in her hand? The student and her parents argued that she was not even the person holding the beer but the other young lady in the photograph with her. The school administration cites school athletic policy regarding drug and alcohol possession. Three basic opinions arise in the video clip, the example cheerleaders set as role models, privacy, and the complete lack of privacy. What do you think? Please be respectful of others and their opinions when you blog

I believe that this issue is extremely controversial and I think that the school maybe took this to an unnecessary extent. If the parents argue that she wasnt holding the alcoholic beverage than maybe she wasnt. However the lack of evidence lead to the school's action and there's no obvious evidence to prove otherwise of what the picture shows.

I do not think the school should have suspended the cheerleader. they dont even have clear evidence that she was holding it. besides, she was outside of school at her sisters wedding. that has nothing to do with the school or administration. they should not be able to control what the cheerleader does outside of school. that should be the parents decision if they allow her to drink or not. thats if she was even drinking though. what if she really wasnt drinking? then the school and administration messed up and ruined a girls cheer season. they would be at fault in my opinion.

  3. the school is right. they have a policy, she knows the policy, she broke the policy, and she put the picture in the internet. she is responsible for her actions.

if something goes onto the internet, then it is not private! even if you set your profile to "private,"(that's a laughable thought), it is still open to everybody with connection.

but still, one picture is pretty insufficient evidence. the school might be wrong. but i don't think they are.

  4. Im with the school. The school policy says any athlete known to possess or use drugs or alcohol will be supended for 2 weeks or 3 games. The picture shows she had a beer up to her lips. Looks like she had it in her possession to me. Furthermore she admitted to having possession of a beer at some point during the wedding to school officials. This cheerleader needs to deal with the consequences that she brought upon herself.

I think that this event was taken to an unecessary extent. I agree with the point in the video that said 'if you wouldn't show it to your grandma, don't put it online'. However, the school should not be questioning just the cheerleader, but also her sister and mother. I don't thin that the cheerleader should be punished for posting a picture online which does not give a clear statement as to whether or not this girl was actually drinking or even holding the bottle. And whoever sent that photo to school officials should not have done that. It isn't up to them to decide what the principal sees outside of school and I think that was wrong. And since the incident happened off of school grounds and it didn't happen during school hours, I think that the police should have been the ones to deal with this, not the school.

  6. In this particular instance, I am not convinced that the beer was actually Bree's, and I don't think it was right to suspend her, particularly not for the last two games of the season. However, I am fully behind schools punishing athletes and such for breaking their contract. That student is a role model and is representing their school, in uniform or out, and if they sign off at the beginning of the season agreeing not to indulge in drugs or alchohol, they should abide by it. If they don't agree, they shouldn't sign off. It's completely their choice.

  7. In this issue, I don't think the cheerleader should have been suspended. It is right that cheerleaders should be role models and set examples for their community but she may not have been directly holding the beer. She could have been taking a picture with the other girl at the wedding and not doing any illegal activities. Although it wasn't smart for her to take a picture that would risk her reputation especially on a public site like facebook.

I think that the school was right to suspend the girl. Even if she may not have been the one holding the beer, there is no way to show that she wasn't either. In that situation there is no way to tell what had actually happened because the photo does not extend low enough to see who's hand it is. In any sense, you should not post things in the internet that you aren't comfortable with everyone in the world seeing. Your name can be googled and things can come up that you least expect; things can resurface after years and can ruin your future. Things that are put on the internet never completely go away. If you put something on the internet that is indecent in some way, a future employer could find it and it could be the reason you are not hired. The internet is not a private place; you should expect that everything you put on facebook will be seen by everyone from your friends to your parents to your administrators.

this is a little ridiculous. there was not proof that the student actually poured the beverage down her throat. this isnt a school even and i think that a priviacy line was crossed. yes it is on the world wide web, but it was at a family function. i know a lot of persons who underage drink at weddings. and if her school was suspending people for a picture online, they would be suspending a lot more students than just that girl. if i were in her shoes, i would be extremely upset. oh and no offense to cheerleaders because i like a select few, but i dont think that people look up to all of them...just sayin.

Honestly if you want to put something on face book go ahead but before hand think about who might see it and with this picture you cant tell who is actually holding the beer if you want to post a picture of it make sure that it is without a doubt not your beer or anything else so make that it actually shows who is holding it. if it is posted on the internet make sure that you no that it can be acessed by anyone and this stuff will come back and haunt you so no that if you post it on something as public as facebook no that it wont be private no matter what your privacy settings are because soeone you no might actually send it to some one else so all in all becareful of what you post

wow.... That is actually kinda funny, but that is the rules sadly; however, rules state that it is only a violation if the student is wearing the schools uniform in the picture. The cheerleader in the picture is not wearing her uniform as shown, which really proves that the girl should not have been suspended because of the picture.

  12. by putting information about yourself online, it becomes public domain, the fact that the girl was with a fellow minor WITH alcohol, might not be the best message to send out if she is a "role model". when you put yourself online, you give up privacy when you allow someone to view your information, you give up the right to privacy if you dont set your privacy settings. this issue is all on that girl. it's her fault, her bad judgment, and her bad luck that she got caught.

  13. I think the girl shouldn't have been suspended. That is pretty dumb, But I guess that's the rules which you gotta follow. If her parents say that drink wasn't in her hand then they should I think believe them. I think the girl should have got another chance and not been suspended.

  14. I understand the administration's decision to punish the girl because she possessed alcohol which was against the rules for high school athletics. She should have been careful to watch what she posts online especially when someone can leak the photo to the school. The administration did not go around snooping in her facebook page. A fellow student found the photo & presented it to the school. It is unfortunate that the alcohol may not have been consumed by the girl & she was at a family event, however it would have been smarter on her part to have not even posted the photo. I do believe in individual privacy, but it is also the school's job to ensure the safety of its students.

I think the school has the right to punish students who break their contract. That being said, I don't think this girl should have been suspended because there is no proof that shows she did break the contract. The beer bottle may be in the picture, but it is quite possible that she never touched it. Then again, the photo was on the internet and that wasn't smart either. Nothing on the internet is private; everyone has access to everything whether you want to believe it or not.

  16. That girl obviously thought she was cool putting a picture up of herself next to a beer like that. Even if she wasnt holding it still looked like it was hers. i think its dumb of her to put a pic up like that knowing people would see it, but the school needs to find better things to do than try and police facebook. And if they are going to do that they should suspend all the other cheerleaders with these types of pictures on the internet because more than likely shes not the only one doing it. it seems like a parent who doesnt like this girl sent it in knowing it would get her introuble.

  17. I have to agree with the school. She knew that the school policy states that she cannot be in possesion of drugs or alcohol, and she broke that rule. Whether or not she is in possesion of the alcohol cannot be proven either way, so I beleive the school is right in suspending her. I think that a rule of thumb is "Don't put anything online that you wouldnt show you're grandmother" Everything that you put on the internet is public domain, and something you did when you were young and stupid, could come back to haunt you, and strongly effect you're future. Be carful kids :)

I do not think that a high school administration should suspend a cheerleader over a picture that she has on her personal networking sight. If the student has a decent story behind the picture and the parents are also willing to back that up then I don't believe the school should have a say. However, the student obviously would have known about the drug/alcohol policy and if she had appreciated her spot on the team, she would have thought twice before posting the picture. Like I said, I don't think the girl should have been suspended, but because of this accusation, future cheerleaders and other students who are associated with a sport should all be cautious. Even though you may think that drinking/partying is fun it has its consequences when you're not willing to use your head.

  20. In my opinion, I think the school took this incident a little too far. The girl's photo was not found by the school, and that was an invasion of privacy on the person's part is showing the school this photo. But it is an the girl's part for making this photo public to the world of the internet. I do believe the girl deserves some punishment for this act, whether or not it was her drink or not, because, like someone stated above this girl is a role-model to the student body of her school. But the punishment was a little TOO severe. And not to talk down on our cheerleaders and such, but this may be too common of an event.

  21. I side with the school. The school has the right to do whatever they deem necessary in order to stop illegal behavior. It doesn't really matter whose beer it was, why was it in front of her face as if she was drinking it? She only took that picture in order to look cool, and the school did the right thing by punishing her. Next time maybe she will think before she does something so unwise. Also, why is her parent condoning this sort of behavior? She should be reprimanded not told that it was ok. Finally, I would like to applaud CNN on their ability to get both sides of the story, so that we don't just listen to the teen's point of view. This way we can actually hear the schools side, and see what the truth really is. That kind of unbaised journalism is rare these days, so I am very pleased to see that someone is still doing it.

The school in my mind has all the rights to suspending this girl. If you do not want the entire world to see what you put on Facebook and you are not ready to face the consequences then you should not have a Facebook or even post on it. Many schools and classes have Facebook pages. Why should it be any different if it's a students page or not when Facebook was originally a form of communication between colleges which are infect school. The same rules should apply. I funky support the school in their decision.

Also she should not have taken a picture that would made her look bad, she could have taken same pose and not put the beer in the equation. But i believe that the school did go far, by using something from the internet but if they had a policy that is fair because she had to have known or else why would she have joined the squad. People should follow the laws of the state and country. Of course it is illegal to drink under the age of 21 in the US, so the cheerleader is breaking the law. It may be allowed in her parent's opinions, but it is still illegal. If you do something illegal and don't want to be punished, you should have the sense to not post it on the internet where the entire world can find it.

theres two sides of this story. one the cheerleader's story and the schools story. Whose word do u take? If the girl says she wasnt drinking it there, but the school administration says that " at one point she confessed to having a beer in her hand" then who is the public supposed to believe. She is old enough to know the law and know that drinking below the age of 21 is illegal. The school did go too far in suspending her from the rest of the games of the season, but she should of still gotten some other punishment. The school should watch out for students bringing alcohol to school, and should stop worrying about what goes outside of school

  69. This is soooo stereotypical haha and you don't need proof that she drank it, the world isn't stupid. I think it is a combination: I think the school shouldn't be looking at student's facebook pages, but the student should know better than to post that on her facebook. She agreed to follow those guidelines when she decided to become a cheerleader and she left proof of her breaking them on the front of her facebook... Really now? Come on grow up take responsibility and learn from it. Also... who looks up to cheerleaders? Honestly haha

I believe that the school had no right to suspend her from her games. I believe this because her face book account is not school related, nor should the school have the right to check it for things to prosecute her with. Yes face book is public, but to monitor students after school is a bit much. In a normal case, if she was posting pictures that had a clear image of her drinking and so on, then I don't blame the school. But this picture can't support her story or the schools side, so it should have been dropped.

If the cheerleader had in fact taken a picture with a beer in her hand, then whether the school likes it or not they like all other accusers need hard evidence that it was in fact the cheerleaders hand that was holding the beer. But what worries we teens the most is that our violation of a private engagement of our lives was opened for publics view and used against us for having the time of our life at such special events. Its wrong and should not be done to anyone. So no the girl should not be suspended

A high school administration shouldn't have suspend a cheerleader over a picture of her at a wedding with a beer in her hand. and if the student and her parents argued that she was not even the person holding the beer but the other young lady in the photograph with her. The school administration cites school athletic policy regarding drug and alcohol possession. but as long ass its not at school they have no control of the students so they shouldn't get in trouble. Three basic opinions arise in the video clip, the example cheerleaders set as role models yeah they may be in tittle for that but as long as there doing that in school outside it shouldn't matter, privacy should be given to everyone, and the complete lack of privacy why would they even be wasting there time looking at students face book just to get them in trouble that's just not cool.

First because the school should give students there privacy and second because it might have not even been hers like her and her mom and dad argued and third because it is out of school and she is not under school authority its under her parents and if it was her sisters wedding that means her parents were there and only they can get her in trouble.

I see tons of pictures like this and it seems like every other kid on campus is going to parties and drinking, yet our school does nothing about, instead our school board decides to criticize the music played at a rally. our school needs to step it up and start laying down the law on the students who are participating in these things.

My opinion towards this blog is that it was not right for that teen to get suspended and maybe her and her mom are right that she was not drinking. Also I dissagree with the actions that the school took because this wasn't in school and the picture does not show her takin in the alcohol so they can not proof that she was drinkin just by looking at the picture. If there would have been a video it would have been different because than it would be proven that she was drinking and violated the terms of her as a cheerleader. I think that this violated her privacy and her life because it is her life and her mother was there so it shouldn't be much of a problem.

  85. I don't think the girl should have been suspended form the cheerleading squad. The girl was not actually drinking the beer and she wasn't the one holding it So it was not in her posession. And even if she was just holding the bottle she shouldn't be suspended because she didn't drink it. She lost her privacy by posting it on the internet, but she shouldn't have been suspeded. The school should not have the power to suspend people over what happens in their private life. If anyone actually has the power to do something over the picture, it might be law enforcement because of underage drinking, but the parents say that she is not drinking. Also the school and school staff should have better things to do than look at student's Facebook pages and then decide to punish them for a photo.

This is not the kind of example she should be making for "younger eyes". Get over the fact that nothing on the internet is private and respect your school's rules. Had they been able to prove that she was drinking, they may have had a case, but for a student with a good record (I'm assuming), she should not have been punished so severely. Students with truly damaging habits, such as drugs or a constant relationship with alcohol, should be monitored and perhaps deal with some consequences, minor offenses like this should not be punished so severely. That being said, anything that goes on the internet is subject to controversy and review by different people in an authority position, and they have the power to punish however they see fit.
