State of the Union: Jobs and America (Post #6)

As your years of mandatory schooling soon comes to an end, you will all be faced with the task of finding work and surviving in the economy.  Some of you will attend college first, but that will only delay the inevitable.  Your future doesn't just depend on what you do, but it depends on others as we are all interdependent in the economy.  Watch the video of the President's speech (about 4 minutes), listen carefully, and address the questions below.

Do you agree with his view on American jobs past, present, and future? Are you as optimistic for the country as he is (short term, long term)? Will we continue to lead or be passed up by nations like China?
Are you optimistic for yourself? Has your education prepared you for the world? Will it when you have finished? What will your role in the economy be?
What will it take on the part of citizens (not the government) to improve America's economic future? What can the government to do help?

Post your responses by Friday.

America was and is one of, if not the greatest nations in the world. However, it has become too spoiled and relaxed, and does not focus on its priorities. Countries like China are just dying to get the chance to be more powerful than America, and they are steadily pushing forward to that goal while we slack off.
I dont think my education is enough to get me a job over an education from elsewhere in the world... not just because I'm a bad student, but because the education in America seems to be dumbing down consistently. I believe it is only a matter of time before America is no longer a super-power, and our education will be minuscule in comparison to that of other countries.

  2. i do agree with the president, china is by far becoming a greater country than we are. like obama said, "china is educating their children earlier and longer in math and science." this is very smart for china to do and i do not know why we are not doing the same. soon china will be the number 1 world power if we keep up what were doing now. education is the key.

  3. To begin with, I do indeed agree with the President's views regarding the job hunt in the past, present, and future. As I have discussed with my Nana about jobs in the past, what he said was exactly what she said: it used to be much more easier to acquire job without having a degree first. But like the President stated, as times change, we too have/have had to change and so we we're able to arrive where we are now, with the "largest most prosperous economy in the world" even in the recent hard times. Regardless of this fact that we're still succeeding in the present, I agree that such changes as to "out-innovate, out-educate and out-build" must occur to keep us up to par for the future. I am more long term optimistic than short term optimistic since it will not happen overnight that we will achieve these three things. Possibly we may indeed be passed up by nations like China until then, yes. In regards to myself, I have yet to understand what my role in the economy will be, but I believe when I am finished with all of my schooling, I will know the answer and therefore be prepared "for the world." In regards to American's citizens, it will mostly be on us to perform the actual acts to get us out of this rut yet the government can guide us in exactly what we should be doing such as influencing more of us to go into the study of the sciences by offering scholarships or whatever other incentive.

I definitely agree that a lot of jobs in the past didn't require a degree. President Obama is right in that times are different now. As new technology comes out and jobs change, the jobs are going to require workers who have studied and have been trained to do these jobs. Continuing our education is very important because as far as I am concerned, I do not believe we are "prepared for the world". After college I can only hope that I will be prepared to take on the world and be successful.

  5. President Obama's speech really does encourage me, and it should to everyone in America who watched it. I am in agreement with his view on jobs in America, as he doesn't sugar coat it but tells the truth. It can only make an individual listen and then tell themselves that 'this is reality, lets work hard and get better.' Just like any other nation in the world, America has overcome what seemed to be impossible in the past decades. Optimism is our only hope to a better economy. It can spark and fuel ideas which lead to, ultimately, a much better economy and more educated people who work not only for themselves but for the good of society and America. At this point in my life, I can say that I am optimistic. Things like college and jobs look interesting and fun and I am willing to work hard to get to my destination. The citizens of America simply need to want to compete, and not just have things handed to them with ease. If that is accomplished, countries like China will have to move out of the way for America's explosive economy.

  6. I agree with president Obama that times are different now and that more skill and education is required in the jobs tha we have now in the future. I dont beilieve that education alone can prepare someone for the future but experience in the world and in that career is also required to better yourself. I am willing to work hard to have a better future for myself because getting a job today isnt as easy as it was back in the day when not much skill and education was required.

It is true that many things have changed over the years. an education after high school is becoming more in demand. if there were two people applying for one position, and one of the applicants had a hs degree while the other had a college degree, who would be most likely to get the job? i dont have to worry about education after hs because i already have a job locked away in the marine corps

  8. I do believe that America should be educated so people could have better jobs. A lot of people don't have jobs because they are not educated. Although many people don't have jobs because of the economy. So unless the economy gets better then I don't think that the unemployment rate would change even if people were educated.

There is truth behind obamas words. We as a nation have come far and for it we have prospered way beyond many others. And yes we have lossed many jobs in our nation and built many new establishments, blah blah blah. But honestly how do we get optomistic about a world that will come to ruin by the many kids the adults are hoping have learned well and are still learning. Now, im not saying we coudnt make this country better, im just saying im a bit concerned. So many of the teens I have personally seen seem to not care about their futures. They live in the past and the present. The future is like the fog of a cold morning. They dont care that its there. Sure its effecting their life, but all they have to do is make it out into the society the adults have provided for them and later in the day go home again. HOnestly the educational standard for student is great. But it isnt what they choose to teach us. Its how we choose to accept what they teach. And throuh the actions and words of some of my fellow classmates we dont really seem to care if it really will effect us at all.

I agree with him. It used to be really easy to get a job but the economy has changed and employers expect more from the employee. A good paying job most of the time requires a degree so students in school should try harder and try to go to college. Not all of us do though and that's why china has so many honor students. They started learning at an earlier age and focus more on subjects that matter the most like science and math. If students keep quiting school or decide not to continue and go to college we might be in trouble.

I believe that education has a lot to do with the accomplishment of getting a job. If someone is not educated, then the search for a job will be much harder, but, the economy also affects the search for a jobs because some businesses do not have enogh for paying their emplyees. Still even though the economy may affect jobs, everyone should be educated and be prepared for everything, and to get a good job.

  12. I agree with Obama's view of the past, present, and future. I remain optomistic and that we we remain the lading nation as long as every citizen does his or her responsibility by educating themselves and going to work. I myself am optomistic about my future as long as i go to college and earn a good education to prepare me for work out in the real world. As long as each citizen does there share of labor and take care of their responsibilities the nation will prosper more in the future.

And in the case of China passing us as the "world power", it happens. It's not like America is going to stay the best country forever. It's probably better anyways so Americans can get off their high horse and work a little harder. And I don't know what the citizens will have to do to fix the economy. Just let time pass, it'll fix itself.

I actually agree with Obama, that's a first. He is right about the importance of education. It's much harder to get a job now than it used to be. Technology made work out of high school (factories, etc.) much harder to come across. "...but this shouldn't discourage us; it should challenge us." I must say, I'm discouraged, not challenged. So, I guess I'm not as optimistic as he is. Shocker. I think China will pass us by with time. My education thus far is not sufficient enough to get me a promising career I don't think. There are those people who go out and start their business out of high school and get rich, but that's not me. I'll go to college and go from there. After that, a stable career is much more attainable. I'm not too sure what citizens could do to improve the economy, considering the people are the ones who can't find work. The government has work and it's their job to represent and take care of society. They'll figure something out...eventually.

  19. “Do you agree with his view on American jobs past, present, and future?”
Yes, the world has changed drastically in the last hundred years, things change, and so we must adapt to change and make the best of the world we live in.
“Are you as optimistic for the country as he is (short term, long term)?”
Everything in the world happens in cycles, the switching of the magnetic poles, global warming/cooling, the economy, ect. if nothing detrimental happens, I believe the economy will heal itself.
“Will we continue to lead or be passed up by nations like China?”
We will continue to lead because America WAS built on the ideal of freedom. China just mass produces goods at a low price by manipulating their currency value, in truth, America is superior.
“Has your education prepared you for the world?”
No, my parents helped prepare me, and my interest in my future career helped prepare me.
    “Are you optimistic for yourself?”
    Most deffinately.
“What will your role in the economy be?”
I will be making people healthier so they do not need to rely on special foods, diet programs, gyms, machines, ect. When those industries lose money, the people will most likely put it towards things that make the economy circulate more productively. I don’t know much about the microeconomic effects, but I’m sure I can contribute fairly well.
“What will it take on the part of citizens (not the government) to improve America's economic future?”
Less apathy, less laziness, more passion, and more effort. If we sit back and watch the world burn, it will burn, people need to care more about each other and stop being so self centered and living in their own worlds, people need to just CARE about each other and conditions in our lives would improve dramatically.
“What can the government to do help?”
The government can put a lot of petty conflicts aside and work towards the greater good, something that always bothered me about the government, when FDR started his new deal programs and we SAW the positive change in the economy and the attitudes of the people, why was he attacked? Why were his policies criticized and deemed ineffective when they obviously worked. Politicians need to work TOGETHER to solve this problem. Yes, politics will always exist, but start caring about the bigger picture instead of just yourself, care about others.

So being an optomist about the economy right now is all we can really do. Yeah other countries are surpassing us greatly in technology, but what are we to do when technology takes over completely? I honestly feel as if the world as a whole has lost it's *UMPH* people are so dependant now on their fancy IPads and Iphones and Blackberries when in actuality all this will lead to our demise in the long run. We do have an OZONE layer, and I feel as if people do not care, and also... Google is coming out with a car that drives you... what can that possibly do? What if it drives you off a cliff into an ocean because of a malfunction? We really need to expand our job force and figure out new jobs for America... Obama keeps talking about this "Change" yet have we seen a great increase? I think not...

  29. I am not as optimistic as President Obama is about the state of the economy, but I have hope for it. Obama proposed several spending cuts that will be a good start. In order to improve our economy, we need to focus on the long run which I believe Obama is focusing on. The amount of education a person goes through affects how much easier it is to get a job. For example, working at fast food places where high schoolers are qualified to work is more difficult to be hired at because SO many people are trying to work there. A job as a doctor might have more opening once a person goes through all the education necessary. In the long run, it is more beneficial for someone to go through a longer amount of education to be able to get a set career.

One difference is that students in the U.S. do not go to school for such long periods of time as countries like China. In order to improve our economic future, students need to work harder in school, but for the same amount of time, so that we can compete for jobs that require more education. The government can play a part by requiring more of the students in terms of math and science classes. I hope that I will be prepared for the world when I am done with college.

I am optimistic for the country because as stated before, we are strong and defined, we've proven ourselves in getting out of even some of the toughest of times. I believe that the United States will continue to take the lead when it comes to other nations because no other county is as diverse, no other country has so many creative minds, and no other country has such great opportunity.

Many people in the United States value entertainment and leisure rather than "progress" and "efficiency" and all those communist propoganda goals. Basically, even after China passes up the U.S. as the world super power, this will still be one of the best countries in the world to live in. I am optimistic for my future and I believe that with a college education I can easily land a job within the United States that will pay well and allow me to live a content, fulfilling life.

I think as long as the US fulfills its potential and doesn't slack off. I'm optomistic about my future, but i'm not sure if my education has prepared me for the real world because i haven't tested my skills yet.

China is becoming a better and greater county than the U.S. I believe that my education has not yet prepared me for the world in general.Maybe we should just start following china's footsteps so we could have a better future for our country and for our economy as well. I think for getting a better and higher education would improve the economic future and the government could help by loading more money for the students that want to continue their education.

I agree with Obama about the American job situation over the years. I also believe that it is only a matter of time before China surpasses our country by far. They are so dedicated to working and getting ahead that no one takes the time to relax. You hear about kids being in school for hours and hours and hours everyday and their discipline but where is their fun. I am cautiously optimistic about about the future of the country. My future however, I am very confident in. I feel that I have recieved an education to get me where I need to be. Furthering my education will only expand my options and prepare me for things to come.

  61. The imposter in the White House is destroying this country. In the first nineteen months of his presidency, he's added more to the national debt than all presidents have from Washington to Reagan. China, as a result, will surpass the United States economically, militarily, and technologically in the imminent future. This country will not survive with this incompetent, sophomoric community organizer as president.

How can this country maintain its economic leadership in the world? Impose tariffs on all Chinese goods, cut government spending, and eliminate entitlements. End the war in Afghanistan, and bring back jobs to this country.

Why isn't Obama focused on resolving our economic woes? He's either genuinely idiotic, or he wants to cripple this country so that he can impose socialism.(Sloan P.3/Bauer P.4)

If Obama actually achieves some of his goals regarding making America better, then maybe people should be optimistic in the long run. People can not expect anything short term because Obama states only long term goals. Whether China passes America, or whether America continues to lead can not be certain because anything could happen at this point.

China and India ahead of us in technology? What a joke. What their ahead of us in is population...aproaching 3 billion when combined. Their education system is not ahead of ours by a long shot, we would have a high score too if we only counted our top grading percentage of students. What those idiots over there have that we don't is modern slave labor. Over there people work in factories for the equivilent of a dollar a day. That's were all our jobs are going to, the rabbit like breeders accross the pond. The problem is our American based companies are manufacturing products over there, then sending it over here so we can go to places like Walmart on weekends and buy cheap plastic garbage from China that's going to get thrown into a land fill next month. But hey, what's there to do? The great leaders in charge have racked up a huge credit card debt to the lender named China.

Personally i believe that our nation does need to improve the educational system. As the president said about how to improve the college rate in our nation it all must do with the education that we receive from our educational instructors. I believe though that we need to create a system of teaching that allows teachers and students work together, as we can see the system we have now does not seem to be working well. There needs to be changes and to move on and not get 'left' behind by other countries we must all (students and teachers) become in sync to be able to create long life learners out of the future generations.

  83. Unfortunately, my view on America's future isn't one of butterflies, daisies, and filled to the brim with optimism. I believe the majority of America is progressively moving down the path of the spoiled and lazy( me included). It all stems from under appreciation. We really don't grasp how lucky we are to have all these opportunities. Everyone is always complaining how bad they have it and that the minimum wage is to low, or the cost of college is to high, etc. So we have all our business moving overseas because some people are willing to work for cheap because they just want money so they can put some food on the table, they aren't worried about Plasma TVs, Playstation 3's, or other wants. Now that I think its right or that people should work in those conditions or at that low of a pay. Yet, we have plenty of Americans who are unwilling to work at minimum wage because it is beneath them or would just rather sit on their ass because unemployment deals out so much money. We need to start to with moral reform personally, how you can implement that I have no idea.

I believe that by pushing harder to strive learning more, gettig a higher education, better ourselves and to then educate the world, we will make the country a much more independent, self-reliant but hardwokig at he same time, each generation has to step their game up in the working industry to know that technology changes and so does everything and everyone else an their expectations.
