Organ Transplants and Scarcity (Post #5)

Around the world, governments and citizens make decisions on how to best use scarce resources.  In the case of organs, science has made great strides with surgeries that allow one person's organ to be put into another body, thereby extending the life of someone who otherwise faces death.  38% of American adults are identified as organ donors on our driver's licenses.  A deceased person's family have the option to choose to donate at the time of death, as well.  People can also voluntarily give up their own organs while they are alive. .For example, we have two kidneys and can survive with one, bone marrow, and blood and plasma can be given.
The problem is that not nearly enough of these organs are available and people in need are placed on lists during which time many die while waiting their turn--having never received their donor organs because of the shortage of organs.  The only incentive is the rewarding feeling of helping someone else and obviously that isn't enough to solve the problem.  A blackmarket exists in some countries where those with enough money can find an organ while those without cannot.
In the nation of Israel, they have a long history of problems getting organs.  "Most Jews are under the mistaken impression that traditional Jewish law requires a body be buried whole at all costs," according to Robby Berman.  So in 2008, a law was passed in Israel to give donor card carriers a legal right to priority treatment if they should require an organ transplant.  Also, families who agree to donate the organs of deceased loved ones may accept money to "memorialize" the deceased.  These decisions to donate must be made by the individual while they are alive in order to qualify.  So, Israel has become the 1st nation in the world to legally do both of these things.

Read either linked article underlined blue above and consider the following questions.
Are you an organ donor or do you plan to be one?
What could be done to help encourage your decision or the decisions of others to become one?
If you needed a kidney or other organ, how far would you go to get one?
What should the United States do to increase the quantity of organs available for transplant?
Consider and explain both the pros(benefits) and cons(costs) of the idea you present.

  1. Yes, I am an organ donor. There isn't much to encourage it except for the fact that you are helping to save someone's life. That alone is powerful enough to persuade people to simply become organ donors, regardless of beliefs or religion. If I was in need of an organ or kidney, I would simply put my name on the waiting list and wait to recieve treatment. If the U.S. wants to increase the quantity of organ donors, have hospitals and organizations give incentive (money) to the family of the deceased donor. In my opinion, the benefits far outweigh the costs. You are saving a life, and only giving up a part of your body that will never be used again.

  2. I AM NOT AN ORGAN DONOR YET. I PLAN TO BE ONE IN THE NEARER FUTURE. I LET MY FAMILY KNOW THAT IF I WERE TO DIE I WANT MY BODY TO CONTINUE LIVING THROUGH OTHERS. I AGREE WITH JIMMY AND THE UNITED STATES SHOULD GIVE MONEY TO PERSUADE AND MAKE PROPAGANDA TO ADVERTISE THE IDEA. I KNOW BY DONATING ORGANS I CAN SAVE LIVES. IF I NEEDED AN ORGAN I WOULD PROBABLY TRAVEL THE WORLD TO FIND ONE IF THEY DIDNT HAVE ONE HERE IN THE U.S.

  3. Im not an organ donor either but i also do plan to be one in the future. The only benefit i can think of is that you would be saving other peoples' lives. If you choose to donate after you pass away, there shouln't be any cons since you have no need for the organs anyways. If i ever needed an organ i would try and pay any amount of money or travel anywhere to get one.

There is no real incentive to be an organ donor. The only incentive I could think of was when I went to get my Driver's License, there was a $15 fee to NOT be listed as an organ donor on the license. Personally I think there is NO reason not to be a donor other than religious reason or terminal disease.

Sadly there are over 254.4 Million Drivers drivers in the USA and only an average of around 20% of them are listed as organ donors. The bottom line is, there shouldn't have to be an incentive to be an organ donor, and there are very few legitimate reasons to not be one.

  5. I don't think I am an organ donor...? But I definitely want to be one. I don't see why not! Donating organs is just when you die right? So it really wouldn't hurt anyone at all to be a donor. I think everyone should be one! Perhaps the reason they aren't is because it could be hard or complicated to become one, or maybe they just don't know how. But that can easily be fixed with a little media and propagangda (;

if im not an organ donor then i would like to become one. why wouldnt you want to help save someone's life? i think the US could offer some benefits to convince more people to become an organ donor. we could also spread the word of becoming one through billboards or tv commercials. we could help save many lives if we had more organ donors. if i needed an organ i wouldnt go too far out of my way to get one. if people dont want to help save my life or someone else's life, then thats on them. you cant make people do it even though it is the right thing to do.

  7. I believe many people would be an organ donor, however the thought of dieing to donate an organ is a scary thought. For example, when a person is getting their license and they are asked to be a donor they might put it off due to the negative thought, a.k.a my mother.
I will become a listed donor and i think everyone should. people who receives transplants from the black market tend to be wealthier than most. Not only is that unfair than those who are less fortunate, it also poses the question of where these organs are coming from. To avoid illegal activity and deaths everyone should become a donor.

  8. To be honest the idea of being an organ doner is too scary so as of right now I would not donate, maybe when I get old and don't care I will donate, but as of right now no way. I believe the only way to get people to see this issue and to get them to change their minds is by making commercials or advertisements in which it shows statistics of people who have their lives taken away from just waiting in a line. I beleive that if they were to put up advertisements on facebook millions of people would change their minds about organ donating.

  9. i do not know if i am a donor, if i have the option presented to me, i shall become one.

the only incentive i can think of is possibly advertising that upon your DEATH when you will no longer require your organs because you are DEAD, you can possibly save a sad mother's child from some disease.

if i needed an organ, i'd go through legitimate means to get one, a waiting list.

more organs needed? fund organ cloning.

pros: people have a higher chance of survival, no organ rejection, less clogged up medical system

cons: upset religious people, financial costs.

  11. I personally wish to become organ donor when I have the opportunity. To know I can still contribute to our society after my death is enough incentive for me to participate. It's hard to say what I would do for an organ if it meant life or death. It's possible to wonder if I might seek illegal methods in an attempt to prolong my life. I think a cash reward of some sorts could inspire others, but I don't think we have the money to support this incentive program. So we'll just have to rely on the giving nature of the American people.

I am an organ donor, the biggest thing that caught me to organ doning was knowing that i could help save somebody's life. if people knew the amount of people out there that could live through simply giving an organ i would hope they would donate. if i needed one i would try my best to find a donor, but the government should show people that this is a problem that we are facing, and make it knowing that by donating you are saving a life, just like giving blood can do.

I believe donating organs not only saves lives, but gives second chances to those that need and deserve it.
I would wait on a transplant list among others for an available organ.
I believe we should fund organ cloning/ Stem cell research etc etc.
Pros: Saves lives, Stops the scarcity of organs, may become handy in the future if we all suffer organ failures (Repo the genetic opera) etc
    Cons: Upset religious people, financial.

  14. I personally am an organ donor. I chose to become an organ donor because if anything were to happen to a family member or anyone close to me, I would want to be the one to lend a helping hand. If I were to encourage people to become organ donors, mostly I'd say it's a feel good about yourself type thing.
If I needed a kidney, I would wait on a transplant list just like everyone else. How far I would go is a case by case question because my options would depend on how urgent the matter was.
I believe the United States should increase appraisal for being an organ donor. Maybe publicize it more.

As of right now I am not an organ donor. In the future I will probably become one. Like others have said, maybe people shy away from being an organ donor because the thought of dying is scary. Personally, that's how I felt. I was getting my driver's license and they were asking me if I died if I would like to donate my organs...too much to think about right at that moment. However, in the future I will probably become one because the idea of helping someone else makes it worth it. To increase the number of organs available there might need to be some sort of money incentive.

I am an organ donor and cant see why somebody wouldnt want to be one. If youre dead you have no use for any of your organs and if they can save someones life by takeing my useless ones im all for it. I REALLY think it should be mandatory for everyone to be a donor because ou never know what can happen.

  17. I'm not for sure on what can be done to help me change my mind, but I am not an organ donor and I don't plan on being one. If I needed a kidney or other organ, I don't think I would go far to get one, because life for me is going to end one day. The United States can't do much to increase the quantity of organs available for transplant because it's up to the individuals themselves. The good side of donating organs is that it allows another life to be lived longer. The con of it is that the individual is allowing a part of him/her to be inside another individual, which I think is weird when thinking about it.

I am not currently an organ donor, although I would consider it, most deffinately. I've always wanted to be an organ donor, but in due time. One way to encourage my decision would be to speak to a person in need of a transplant and to hear and see how much it would mean to them. If I needed a kidney or an organ in general, I'd probably go as far as anyone who really needed it. Maybe I wouldn't be pushy about it, but I know that once I was finally able to recieve one I'd be very greatful. There have been medical break-throughs where artificial organs have been made, that could be something to increase the ammount of organs available. Maybe those in need of organs should tell donors and non-donors there story in hopes that more people will step forward and offer a part of themselves to someone who could make good use of it. The only other thing I could think of that would possibly increase the amount of organs available is if more people start dying...

The benefits of being an organ donor are that you'd be saving someone's life, wether a child or an adult. You'd be making someone's life so much better, letting them live, keeping them with their loved ones. In return for an organ maybe you'd get everlasting friendship or some type of repayment.

The cons of being an organ donor is that sometimes you don't know if you can even donate. There may be something medically wrong with you and then you may end up needing the organ in the end. and in some cases when you donate, the person who needed the organ may not adapt to their new body part and could still result in loss of their life.

I do plan on donating because we have two kidneys and just need one to survive so why keep the other one? That one can save one life and if more people did that more lives would be saved. What I think is unfair though is that we donate our organs when were alive or when we die but some people still have to pay money to get it. Either way, I would still pay everything I could to get an organ if I ever need one.

  21. I am not a organ donor right now, and I am still between whether or not I'll become one. I'll probably become one because I believe that only those who become organ donors should receive donations. This should be enough incentive for the number of donors to increase.

On one hand you know that donating may save someones life, but at the same time it is scary to think that at the end of one's life organs will be taken out and leave the body void. I am still unsure about my decision.

  22. I am indeed an organ donor. There is no reason why you cannot be one if your religion allows. When you have died you could help give someone else a new chance at life and even when you are still alive. Humans were given an extra kidney and your body is able to produce more blood so why not help others in need. To get more people to become a donor, there must be more of an incentive; tax break? if not pay fee? show the lives lost from not donating? spread the word for the need of organs? The government could dedicate more money and time spent to the search for organ donors and ways to help those in need. Sloan p.3

The United states needs to not be so uptight and just make things easyer. they should allow stem cell resurch and grow new orgins and let more experimenting go on.The pros are that its easyer and faster. the cons are there is haters in the world and nobody can get what they want.

  28. Yeah, I am an organ donor. In some ways I think it’s gross to have another person’s body part inside you but really it can save yours or someone else’s life. Plus I tore my ACL a little over a year ago and I currently have another person’s body part inside my knee. If I’m willing to receive body parts, I should be able to give them when I no longer need them myself.

But then again i would like to save a life so considering on being an organ donor wouldn't be such a bad idea. To help me and others be encouraged to make a good decision would be propaganda and a lot of information on the organ donation "process". If i needed an organ i would want to go as far as i can just for an organ but if i couldn't then there is nothing for me to do but wait on the waiting list. Giving up some of your organs while you are alive can be a bit creepy, but if you are dead then why not be a donor to help out someone who is in need in their time we cant say no and let them die while they wait on a list. There can be some sort of way to encourage people to give an organ while they are alive by paying them for that organ and if an individual is dead then just take the organ if he or she is dead what's the point of having organs when you are dead if they are just going to rot or be eaten by maggot and worms.

  33. I am not an organ donor yet. But i eventually plan to get one when i get my California State Drivers License.

I am choosing to be an organ donor because if i die unexpectedly then i would have no problem giving someone my unneeded organs.

i don't understand why people wouldn't be an organ donor unless they were selfish. I mean its not like your going to miss your organs in your coffin dead. Also, if your organs are still healthy and usable why not give them to someone who can use them. you would be saving another life.

Unfortunately not everyone is so nice, but if i had a plan to get more donors i would offer a tax write off or even compensation. i believe so many more people would sign up to be organ donors.

its crazy what people will do for needed organs. some incidents even result in murder and scams. if more people donated we wouldn't have these problems.

However, if a loved one or i were in a place or situation where we needed a transplant, i would defiantly go to extreme lengths. maybe not to murder but defiantly give up as much money i could get my hands on.

As I see it, you can’t accept organs in the hospital if you are not willing to donate them. If my life involves being plugged into the wall, for corn’s sake please at least try to save some of my organs for others before you pull the plug. Organ donation is just a staple in my life, and I believe others should do it too, but not by force. I like it the way it is now, you are given the options and choose accordingly. That seems fair. And as far as quantity of organs, we can’t change that. Organs will come and go. It’s a marvel we as a people are even able to accomplish such intricate procedures.

Synthetic organs along with the incentives listed above could be used to increase the supply of organs in the United States. Pros would be that the supple of organs would greatly increase, however, the money needed to implement the tax breaks and medical benefits is currently not available.

That way, my death will actually bring life to somebody else's life. That makes everything worth it, by placing good karma in the universe, that karma may come back to any of my family members that need an organ. I believe more people should consider donning their organs, it makes the difference in someone's life.

I am currently not a organ donor, not saying that I would not be. I would be a little worried about the whole process if the doctor really knows that you are brain dead.... I know and have heard of inmates willing to give organs to help others and to help their families. If an inmate would like to donate, especially someone on death row. They could donate and the families of the receiver could pay for the medical costs....Or if they want they could give the inmates family money to help them. I am not sure about all inmates, that would be difficult to monitor the diseases that the inmate may have contracted while being in the joint. Seriously, I think that this would be a valuable tool. Maybe if they make it mandatory the crime rate would go down. I have had several distant family members benefit from bone marrow transplants but since have passed. I know of several members in our church that have benefitted from bone marrow and have grafted and been very successful. Most people that have had transplanted organs lead a very limited life with the medication that they have to take for ever. I am not so sure that I would want to lead that limited life. After all its a Race to Heaven! I don't want to be late.

  55. I am currently not an organ donor but I plan to be the next time I renew my driver’s license. I like the idea that Israel has about helping to pay a small amount of the funeral costs when a deceased family member of yours is a donor. The satisfaction that people gain from being a donor and the lives they save should be enough. I would wait on the list if I needed an organ; it’s only fair and just enjoy the time I had left. The US should send letters in the mail to everyone when they turn 18 like the country of Holland does to ask them if they would like to be a donor and what organs they would want to donate. I would say that my idea would have many benefits and help increase the amount of organ donors in the US.

To increase organ supply we should manufacture them ourselves, if possible. We have artificial haearts, why not kidneys and livers and the like?

I do plan to become an organ donor when the opportunity arises. The idea that I can make a difference in someone's life even after mine had ended is enough to convince me. I don't believe we should give people incentives to become organ donors, people should become organ donors because of moral motivation, not material incentive. We've been selfish all our lives, wouldn't it be nice to be a little selfless once we have passed? I wouldn't go to far to get an organ if I needed one. As for the U.S., i'm all for the progress of science and technology, we can use that progress to develop innovative ways to create organs.

To start off I myself is currently an organ donor. I don't see why some people aren't organ donors once there dead there dead. So why hold on to something if you cannot savor? Its like keeping a wrecked car. After it is useless/Wrecked. Who does that? Yet it seems many times the case that religion is to blame so to speak. Unless one of course decides to do so regardless of religion in which case would be a plus for the person that needs it. Being a donor is scary if you think about especially at such a young age. But you have the chance to save someone's LIFE WOULDN'T YOU DO IT? It's not like you would let them die if you saw them in the street bleeding out right? All the same it just depends on the kind of person you are and what you value most... “Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.” Anonymous

I guess if others were going to be swayed on their decision, I'd say run some depressing commercials like they do for beaten animals and starving children where you send 18 dollars a month or however much. I'm sure one of those would guilt people into it. If I needed an organ, I wouldn't go far to get one...I wouldn't get one at all. If I'm dying, I'm dying for a reason. There's no point in trying to change fate. Like if you're about to die, then BAM! new kidney! not dying anymore...give it some time. You're going to almost die/die again. Why would I want to go through waiting for my death twice? Just die when you're supposed to die. I don't think the United States should do anything to increase the quantity available. It's too personal of a decision to have anyone but each of us decide for ourselves. Just sayin, I'm not sure why people would want a dead person's organs.

I am an organ donor… in the future, I will be an organ recipient. This is an important subject to me and I feel that everyone should be an organ donor. It is one to be selfish or scared when you are living, but to be any of that even after you are deceased?? There is no reason not to do this. Being an organ donor makes you someone’s miracle. And in my case I pray for someone to be that miracle for me. Out of all the copious bodies we have on earth, only a diminutive portion choose to be organ donors. With a dearth of organs, people are dying as they wait for their miracle that never comes. I think that the feeling of knowing that one can save another’s life and impact so many others should be enough to encourage people of nonchalance to make the exemplary decision to mark the yes box on donor form. As I wait on the heart transplant list, I wish to do anything possible to get what I need, not just for me but for my loved ones. An organ donor does not only save one life, and a voluminous number of people fail to realize that. My family is insolvent and cannot go to the black market to buy an organ so we hope for people’s clemency. As impalpable as it is, I know the day will come when I will be giving my full gratitude, appreciation, and unassailable admiration to my miracle.

I wouldn't go anywhere if I needed an organ to survive.. 79. I am an organ donor, and while I believe it is important for people to donate, I think the side effects of doing so must be presented. The only ethical thing to encourage organ donation to me, is to make sure everyone knows the benifis of doing so. While not pursuing everyone to donate organs can leave a scarcity, giving an organ is a HUGE deal and someone could die while trying to donate. I also believe that a person should state whether or not they prefer to donate after death, because it may be against some peoples beliefs. I think UNOS has an effective system of for donations because it is based on priority (when a recipient is put on the list) and necessity (medical need).

There should not be anything done to encourage people to donate organs because some people can not donate organs because they have defects. Even though they are willing to they cannot, so it should be strictly voluntary. Of course the U.S could offer incentives such as money, but then where would be the equality towards the people that can not donate. The con of no incentives is of course: no large increase in the amount new donors for people that need organs to get organs from.

  113. I have no intention of ever becoming an organ donor. I wouldn't do anything to encourage organ donating. I'd personally rather die than have to rely on someone else's organs. It's just Darwinism, those who have superior genetics and survival skills will live longer while those who have inferior genetics and/or lack of survival skills will die off.

If somebody really needs it, i will be willing to give a liver or two. <= That's a little joke.
But honestly, i would. If i needed to have a transplant, i know i would be getting it from someone who knows someone else needed it.
I think people who knows its benefits will realize someone will need help one day, and they would help!
I think i said all of this in a way where it makes sense and doesn't make sense.

  115. Imma organ donor I get this cool lil pink thing on my drivers license that says Imma donor other than that there is nothing else as far as incentives. I think everyone should be a donor, I mean what good is a kidney to a dead guy? And what would I do to get an organ if I needed one? Man I would wrestle a cougar, I mean I love being alive.

  116. I am currently not an organ donor, but do plan to, because I dont look at it as someone having to die for some one else to get an organ. I mean if I'm dead then go ahead and take them, I wont need them. A possiblitly could be to make it a law to be an organ donor, or just advertise it more to the general public.

  117. I am not currently an organ donor, but I want to become one. I think the only way to encourage others to become ogan donors is by telling them that they will get something out of it, such as money. I do not supportt this idea. but I think people will be more willing to donate their organs that way. If I needed a kidney or another organ I would wait on a waiting list or take a donation from a friend or family memeber. If I get an organ great, if not oh well. I don't think there is much the U.S. can do about increasing the amount of available organs, because you would need more willing donors.

I am an organ donor. I chose to be one when I got my drivers license not exactly thinking about it. I don't like the idea of taking out my insides as soon as I kick the bucket. It just does not sound classy to me. But on the other hand, I like the idea of helping another person out if I no longer am going to be using them anyway.

  121. i am not currently an organ donor but i think it could be a good idea to become one. helping someone else after my death seems like a nice thing to do. I dont think there is much to do to encourage it but maybe others can help people realize tat dying people can really use parts that our dead bodies have. and letting them live for another couple years or even more would mean a lot to themselves and to their famalies.

Personally i would not give up my organs, well i would not donate my organs when i am alive unless i really needed to. The only reason that i would would be if one of my family members was in trouble or someone close to me. Also this is not bad (to donate your organs), but just personally i would not. For example i do not believe though that the family should be the one to decide whether the organs can be given away, but well every person and nation can do as they wish as long as they have decided it that way.

yes i plan to become an organ donor as soon as possible, only because i have something that i could live without that could save someone elses life. In my opinion to encourage people it would be smart to let the donor in on the peoples lives and the lives theyd loose if they didnt recieve help. That would give people an incentive to save someone. If i needed a kidney or organ to live and there was not anyone available to donate me one, id probably go to a different country that could help me recieve one. The benefits and costs of my dicisions would be outweighed more for benefits than costs. Peoples lives are more important than any cost.

i applied to be an organ donor but for some reason its not on my license. and well to persuade others to become one is kind of tricky. most people care about their own lives so the best way to go is mainly to point out there organs can save other peoples lives. and if i needed a kidney i don't think id go too far to receive one. if my time has come to pass away then i will accept it except for the slight chance that they already have an organ for my to be replaced right away then why not. only an idiot would refuse that. and well what can the us really do. its mostly rich people that should get involved. they'd pay almost anything to save their own lives so maybe they should donate to organ researchers to help develop organs or to produce products to increase peoples lives. we cant really do much with out money so they can make a huge difference in the organ problem.

i am not an organ donor but i do plan on changing that. there are so so so many people in need of body parts in order to survive and i would love to be one of those to help the cause. we shouldnt need an incentive to help out our fellow citizens. we should all help each other out. if i was in need of some body parts, i would go to crazy extents in order to live. however if someone else was in greater need, i would take one for the team and let them have it.

We as humans are born with the organs we need to survive when we are born. Throughout life people suffer great issues with their organs. I personally am an Organ Donor, yet here is my thought on this subject. I think being an organ donor means giving to those who need it. I do not want my organs going to some alcoholic that blew out their liver from abuse. I want my organs to go to a person who let's say has cancer or a heart problem or something big... Organs need to be put into categories of who actually will use them to their fullest potential. Not abusing, in foreign countries I believe medical systems and cleanliness should be provided. If we all worked together honestly we could not save everyone who needs organs... I really do think paying people for organs is ridiculous also... it's like the black market but legal...

Currently I am not a organ donor but i do plan on being on in the future. The thought of being able to saves someone's life should be enough for people to do it. I mean you're already dead and not using them so why not let someone else? Just think about it if it was you, you would want people to donate so that you have to chance to live.

  129. I am an organ donor, but I think it's safe to say that there is no particular way to increase people's interest in donating their organs. The only reason I did it was because I thought to myself, "What am I really gonna do with them once I die?" It's a personal choice. And the only thing we could really do to increase the number of harvestable organs is to kill people, and no one wants to do that, so we're just going to have to live with the scarce amount of organs we have.

no, i am not an organ donor and i plan not to be one as if right now. i probably would only donate if someone in my family or close friend would be in need. i would also not go far in search for a donation. i think the u.s. should advertise this idea to see what people think and if this has a good outcome then it should happen.

To encourage people to become an organ donor, i think that they should look at that people that really need one. 132. yes i am an organ donor and i think that everyone should be one as well. everyone may have their own views but once you are dead you have no need for your remaining organs. everyone who passes away should have their organs given up to someone in need. if everyone who passes away donates their organs there would be a lot more organs to go around for people who actually need them.

  136. I am not an organ donor yet but i plan to be one very soon. According to my logic, i believe that in order to increase the number of organ transplant donors is by educating the masses. Advertisemnt is a vital resource that the goverment and help groups can use in order to promote organ donations nationwide. Schools should also take a role in educating the youth in their disicion making, of wether or not to donate them.Statistical evidence and case studies would also yeild gtreater influnce towards promoting it as well.
If i was in dire need of a organ transplants, the lenghths that i would got to in order to get one are unfathomble. I would do many things that i wouldnt be proud of in order to survive. but thats the name of the game so i doubt that others wouldnt do the same.
What the United States must do in order to help those in need of organs is to futher push fundings towards other scientific projects such as stem cell research, cloning organs, organ farms, etc.
Pros: The many lives that eould be spare, less money spend on pharmacutical medicines, and a faster productivity for the society in general as we solve another problem that may stunt our economic growth.
Cons: First and foremost, the pharmacutical companies would be outraged at the idea, for the loss of profits. Also the religious freaks would cry blasphamy. Third, this would futher the problem of overpopulation since less people are dying and more living on like parasites on this planet

A better way would be to reward peole because it would be a higher motivation.

  148. I am a donor, but it's pretty sketchy business, as you don't know what will be done with your donated organs/body. Your organs could be taken to heal people, or you could be put in a lab for research, or a variety of other things. I think the only thing that unnerves me is the idea of my body being put in a lab and not being put to good use. I have an older entomologist friend who was in the science program at (I think?) Davis, and he has told me stories of some of the sick things people have done to the cadavers in the student labs. People donating bodies deserve their donation to be treated with far more respect than they are, and after hearing the stories I very nearly called in to have myself removed as an organ donor. However, it doesn't always turn out well for non-organ donors either, considering that there is a huge black market on organs currently in the US. Because so few people have signed up to be donors, very large sums of money can be acquired for body parts such as eyes and tendons. Sometimes people who are not only not donors, but cannot legally be donors (people with aids or leukemia, for example) have their bodies sent to crematoriums and instead of cremating the body, people their will remove, package, and send out organs, tissue, and bones, forging the paperwork which is hardly regulated. Returned to the family are the some of the remains of their family member, and some of whoever else might have gone into the fire that day. The worst part of it is(other than the spread of disease through this) that when these people are caught and the information is released in the news, it makes people decide not to be donors, even though that only worsens the problem. If everyone signed up to be a donor, the supply would go way up, and the demand would go down, and their would no longer be a need for the modern day grave robber.
While I feel that the body is just a vessel, and since we aren't allowed in this country to just plant it and finish the life cycle to help the plants grow and provide the next generation with nourishment, and so we should instead do the something else helpful with it to help the living, I can't enforce my opinions on others. Our deaths are our most private and personal moments, and I feel everyone's wishes should be carried out to the fullest. What needs to be done is just enlightenment on the subject and encouragement to sign up.
