Egypt, Who Do We Support? (Post #7)

Egyptians have taken to the streets in protest of a despotic, corrupt, and U.S. supported government. After days of protest and a couple of "flinches" by President Mubarak regarding a new cabinet and the constitution Egyptians continue to protest with a million man march planned for Tuesday. America is in a precarious position here, do we support Mubarak and his repressive regime or do we support a move towards free elections and democracy? Even if it means a rise to power for the Muslim Brotherhood the main opposition to the current government? Is this a repeat performance of the Iranian Revolution of 1979 that saw America's good friend the Shah Reza Pahlavi lose power to the Ayatollah Khomeini and fundamentalist Islam? What about America's best ally in the area Israel and how they feel about the possibility of a pro-Palestinian Egypt next door and another Six Day War with the chance of a different outcome? If you were the president how would you handle this difficult foreign policy issue?Would you support Mubarak or a new democratic government and the uncertainty of free elections? Please respect the opinions of other bloggers.

I personally think America should take care of it's issues at home before they get involved with other countries. However, for the sake of this blog post, I would support a movement towards democracy and free elections. The Egyptian people were robbed of their last "election", they should have a chance to choose their own leader this time around.

America should try and let what must in Egypt. Let's sit back and watch what the outcome should be. American has intervened in situations we weren't meant to be involved in and it created for us enemies we did not need. It also caused suffering for the civilians in that country. America can just hope for the best.

I believe that as Americans we must help them move towards a Democratic government. We can't just say we like democracy but only in certain places that don't effect us.

I believe we should stay neutral for now. We have to consider how we would help the egyptian people and what would be best for them. We also have to understand that we are not fit to help them economicly. All i can say is that i'm glad that decision is not over my sholders. I would like to help many people who are homeless or hungry but we can't help everyone without a cost.

  5. I understand that Egypt is one of the most imporatnt allies that the United States has in the Middle East. According to Mr. Padilla the United States provides them with money every year. People from Egypt are concerned because we support the regime in power. The important problem is that someone that may not want ties with the U.S will come to power, and that would have serious problems. We aslo have to consider that fact that they want democratic reform, and that is understandable. This is why is support the revolution attempts.

  6. I believe the U.S. should take a neutral stance for now and let Egyptians move towards their vision of a fair government. The U.S. doesn't need to get involved in every domestic dispute that a country has. Things are quickly getting out of control of Egypt so we may need to intervene eventually but right now I think it's best we let things play out to see the outcome. Bauer/Sloan

  7. I would support the people's want for a democratic government and free election. The government needs to reflect the citizens' wants and how to rule. The United States may oppose the Muslim Brotherhood, but in the end it's the citizens' and country's choice to what will happen. Sloan p.3

America shouldn't get involved, at least not right now. We get involved in too many things; and it only creates more problems and enemies for us, usually. Egyptians are protesting a US supported government. "Egyptians have taken to the streets in protest of a despotic, corrupt, and U.S. supported government." ...Why would we intervene right now? Clearly, the US is not their favorite politically, so let's not try to change their government. Let Egypt try to clear up their own problems, US government has plenty to solve already.

  9. America should support a move towards free elections and democracy even if it means a rise to power for the Muslim Brotherhood the main opposition to the current government because America itself has free elections. If I were the president, I would handle this difficult foreign policy issue by siding with the protest. Besides this blog, my real opinions sides with many of the other bloggers, America should not get involved with this situation. America can't even solve its own problems residing in its own country.

  10. If I was the president I'd say we need to stop being the world police. It's not our problem what Egypt does with their government until they become a problem. Sure, there will probably be issues between Israel and the pro-Palestinian Egypt, but lets be real. It's not our problem. We need to focus on things that directly affect us before other nations find us weak and take advantage of that.

    ReplyDelete
  11. If the current government is corrupt and repressive towards its people, it only makes sense to create a government that isn't and that stops the protesting which could lead into violence. If I were president, I would promote a foreign policy that would create a democratic gov't with free elections. Simply give the people what they want.

We went and intervened in iraq because we thought they had nuclear weapons, and wished to help their government, and look where that has gotten us or their government? no where. i think we should stop getting in other people's business, let them decide and run their government how they wish to. we should only help them if things become worse.

  15. Considering the US' history, I suspect that they will support the protestors' thirst for democracy. However, I'm thinking the Egyptians aren't feeling too kindly towards us right now, and I doubt they will much care if we are on their side or not...Until it directly affects us, we should try to let them sort things out for themselves.

  17. If I were president, I would handle this foreign policy issue by remaining neutral to both parties. One would expect for the U.S. to support a new democratic government. Due to the uncertainty of there being free elections after this protest, it is best for the U.S. to remain neutral for now.

  21. The entire situation in Egypt is sticky, because the United States wants to help democracy prevail, but the supporters of this revolution probably will resort to the same repression once they are in power. This would be horrible for the United States, because our allies in Israel would be very threatened by a new Muslim presence, especially in a relatively strong and extremely strategic country such as Egypt. At the moment, the Muslim Brotherhood is not putting forth its own leader to head the revolution, so I think I would side with the more secular, democratic opposition to the current government of Egypt.

Sure the current Egypt goverment is our ally but the only thing America even needs that country for is the Suez Canal for oil trade. Even if the goverment there gets overthrown, the new established one will still be weak. If we have to push it aside to get our canal use back then it could be done easily.

If I were the president, I wouldn't take any sides on the issue at this point. I would make sure to address the situation in a way that doesn't support one side or the other, but still lets the American people know that I am aware of the issue at hand. On another note, I don't think we should be jumping in to try and help them either. We already pour millions of dollars into Egypt already and we are facing an enormous amount of national debt. Before we start focusing on other country's issues we need to take care of our business at home. The rest of the world is waiting to see what the United States is going to do next because it is always getting into the business of other countries. I agree with many others that believe we(the U.S.) should not intervene quite yet. Yes, things are looking bad at the moment, but I think the best choice is to let this episode play out. The U.S. needs to think carefully about the next move because it is a difficult position to be in. Either we support the wishes of the people or the government we are allied with. I honestly do not know what I would do if I were the President. We can only hope that whatever choice is made is thought out carefully.

Although America supports Democracy and has even intervened in other countries before, it may not be in their best interest to do so now, so the government is indecisive. One choice they have is to decide whether to help their long time ally. Another choice is to help Egyptians gain Democracy, but risk a anti-American radical group getting into power. The U.S. should let Egypt handle their own business since we have a lot to deal with currently. If the Egypt citizens are fighting for what they want shouldn't the president try to understand their point of view? If they do not want a democracy like the U.S. that's their problem, why would we help if they don't like the way we handle our own government.

I think the US should stay out of this conflict unless this country is directly affected by one of their matters.

I believe it is time to let the Egyptians do their own voting but ofcourse in a fair way in which the votes can be counted to the extent that everyone's vote counts no matter who votes or how many people vote. A new democratic government should be the best for Egypt it's time for a change like Obama would say.

  95. No matter what America does now in Egypt, Islamic power WILL rise in Egypt and the rest of the Middle East where it has not already, save Israel.

Should we decide to encourage democracy and overturn Mubarak, we will encourage the current uprising and state of frenzy and rebellion, resulting in yet another touchy and volatile pro Islamic country. This will further damage relations with our ally Israel, and put them in much more danger. Should we support Mubarak, US media will tear the US apart for not "supporting democracy", and we will also get flak from the Middle East and possibly even the UN. Also, chances of our support for Mubarak being successful are still very slim.

The US should keep its head low and stay out, which here would support democracy without putting America in the frying pan, but should also help Israel in its likely new threat to survival.

I would act in such a way primarily because, as a representative of the United States, it is my job to stand for democracy as my nation always has. Secondly, I would make it clear to whomever it may concern that I am only acting on the behalf of the people as it seems now that this is what most seem to desire. I would make it VERY clear to the brotherhood that in supporting them, I do not wish to be put into the "middle" of any strife they may have with Israel.

  110. I think the best idea is to wait for a little bit before America makes any choices. Be a bystander and watch while trying to decide what’s best for the country. I think if you wait too long however, it’ll cause a problem to the alliance with Egypt. At the same time though, if you go against Egypt’s "president" the alliance may be shut down and a war could arise.

  111. I believe that we should try to carefully think about our next move. We should consider stepping out of the way for a bit and see what are the best options are on what to do. We should also, however, try to support Mubarak a little bit right now since, if we completely stop helping him, then he'll turn on us and a war may start. Just taking time to think things through is the key to making a good decision and try to be somewhat neutral for a little bit.

If the current government is corrupt and repressive towards its people, it only makes sense to create a government that isn't and that stops the protesting which could lead into violence. If I were president, I would promote a foreign policy that would create a democratic gov't with free elections. Simply give the people what they want.

America has always said that it will always stand by democracy and help those who seek it, so I do feel that it would be against our country's fundamental beliefs to support Mubarak, but why do we have to say or do anything? Why can't we just keep our mouths shut for a little? I feel like at this moment our meddling will only mess things up, and if the people of Egypt can make this transition without our help, they will be all the better for it.
