Testing Accountability (Post #4)

As a senior, you're done with the standardized testing at the end of the year, known currently as the CST's.  As you probably know, the government uses these tests to judge how well a school is teaching you what they have said you are supposed to know.  Now the trend is to take your scores and determined whether or not your teacher did a good job of teaching you.  From an outsider's perspective, its much easier to look at a number as a rating and draw some conclusions.  The LA Times was recently set to publish the names of
6000 teachers test scores to rank them.  This brings up a number of potential thoughts.

Do parents have the right to know a teacher's history of test scores?  Do teachers have the right to privacy in this matter?
As a student, how much of your CST score do you give credit or blame to your teachers (do not use their names, good or bad)?  What else impacts your test results?
Is it fair to have your teachers evaluated in their jobs based on all their students scores?  Is it fair to rate the school based on this data?  Why or why not?
What are things you have learned in school that cannot be measured on a multiple choice test?  What skills should schools teach to prepare you for college or your future careers?
What methods would you recommend to properly evaluate teachers?  What is the best way to measure how well the entire school is doing?

Add any other thoughts on the matter, but please be respectful in your comments of your school and teachers or you'll be removed and receive no credit.
Remember to post by Friday morning.

  1. I dont think its right for teachers to have their jobs evaluated and schools be judged based on cst scores. Its not right because lots of kids dont care about those tests and dont even try. Also, lots of kids might know what they are being tested on, but struggle on tests.

  2. WELL IN MY OPINION I DONT THINK TEAHCERS SHOULD BE JUGED OR BLAMED BEACUSE OF THE SCORES OF STUDENTS CST. SOME STUDENTS TRY THEIR HARD AND OTHERS JUST DONT CARE. IT DOESNT MEAN THAT THE TEACHERS DONT TEACHER RIGHT. THEY SHOULDNT BE EVALUATED LIKE THAT. ALSO SCHOOLS SHOULDNT BE EVALUATED EITHER BECAUSE LIKE I SAID SOME STUDENTS DONT CARE EITHER WAY.

I think that the parents should have the right to view a teachers past test scores because it lets the parents know what kind of teacher is teaching their kid. If they see that the teacher has reoccuring low test scores, odds are the teacher is not teaching to full potential. I do agree that many students do not try on these tests because of the simple reason that it is not for a grade so why try, but i feel that if you continue to have low scores something is not right because a lot of kids do understand the importance of those tests and take them serious.

  4. i believe that to a certain extent a teacher should be judged on these test scores, if on average the scores are extremely low, the teacher is not doing a good job. but it is true that some kids dont care, but a mojority do what they can. i think that the test scores should be averaged out. also, i think that the parents should have a right to see the scores of previous classes because if there are a lot of low scores it proves that the teacher is not very good, therefore they could see that it is not their childs fault for not understanding, but the teachers fault for not teaching well.

  5. parents should be able to look up teachers previous test scores, it's not
private information of the teachers'. ive only had a few teachers i didn't "agree"
with throughout my educational career, but i still manage to pass tests near the top of
my class, because I CARE about my grade. other students who do not care about their grades, and dont do well, are making the teachers look bad in this
case, and i think using scores to see how well a teacher teaches is
faulty data, you cant force a student to take a test well, or want to succeed, sometimes
bad scores happen, this shouldn't reflect on the teacher. the only things school
thus far has taught me about going to college, and about life is.... well, there are a lot
of essays yet to be written, and that there are a lot of stupid people out there
that i am going to have to deal with. that's about it. to evaluate teacher performance, i remember when the teachers would have sit in people who would watch their classes, this can
also be faulty information because the teacher can act like they don't normally act, or
bribe the class with no homework or something to elicit better than normal behavior. i honestly cant think of an idea right now on how to evaluate teacher performance.. maybe a student survey? and the school's success kind of has to be measured in test scores, but it's stupid that when scores are lower that the school loses money, because then less resources = lower quality teaching = lower scores = less resources, things like this are problems in the poor urban area's with a lot of ethnic minorities not doing well in school.

  6. I don't think it's fair to judge a teachers performance on the students CST scores. In my opinion, most students really don't care about these tests because it does not affect them directly. Or in some cases they know it will look bad on the teacher if they do not do well on the test so they purposly fail it. But sometimes the tests really do reflect the teacher's performance if all the students do really badly, and that is something that should be taken into consideration.

I am personally a terrible test taker. That bring said, i have had some really great teachers. I dont believe that parents should be allowed to see the past test scores of students. Many many many students dont give a ... about school, especially the CSTs. If its not for a grade, students wont waste their day on a test.

In my opinion, i dont think teachers should be judged or evaluated by the school or parents, by the grades of the students CST scores. Most students dont care about that test because it dosent effect are grades or GPA, so they just guess on it. Thus it would be inaccurate to base these scores on the teachers teaching ability because it wouldnt be right they could be great instructors but most kids guess so it wouldnt be right.

P.S. Mr Sloan, since you didnt give me student of the week again...ive decided next month you should give me student of the MONTH!!!! :)

  9. I believe that there is no such thing as teacher confidentiality when it comes to test scores. A test is testing the student on what the teacher taught and it reflects directly on the teacher. If a teacher shows poor test grades constantly then they shouldn't be teaching. They are obviously not connecting with the students.

I think that teachers could request privacy when it comes to releasing their test scores but parents should be able to see how their kids teacher is doing. I for one give plenty of credit to my teachers when it comes to teh testing because tehy have taught me well all year adn have prepared me for it. tachers should not just be evaluated on teh testing because there is always going to b kids who dont care about school or the class that teh teachers will never b able to get them interested

To properly judge and rate teachers based on students test scores would be very complicated to do. You would have to know the entire history of each kids schooling years and their abilities or disabilities for that matter.
What if there is a student who has a slight learning disability and no matter how hard they try to be an A student, a C is the best they can do? What if the teacher was not a good teacher, but always lucked out by having extremely smart students who will succeed no matter what kind of teaching skills their teacher has? Yes, teachers do need to be accountable to some degree of course for their abilities to teach, but rating their performance reviews based solely on scores is not the way to grade them. Things that teachers teach you that can't be taught with a multiple choice test depends on each individual teacher, but some things are respect, team work, pride, the list could go on and on with a great teacher.

  12. The thought of a teenager taking the CST’s is “Oh, I’m not graded on this, so I can mess up and it’s no biggie. I don’t have to try.” With this mind set it doesn’t show how well the teachers have been teaching. Not only that, not every student actually tries in general in the school year. Just because a student doesn’t know things, doesn’t mean the teacher is a bad teacher. Now, if it was the test scores are bad, ceteris paribus (the teachers are not teaching well) then maybe. But it’s not causation here. It’s more of a correlation. The students would have bad test scores but we cannot determine whether there is a relationship between that or the teachers teaching. So I don’t believe the CST’s are a sufficient way of determining their skills. As to ideas on what would be better, I’m not sure. But teachers shouldn’t be judged by the CST’s.

    ReplyDelete
  13. In the first place, I do not think the CST tests are accurate markers of knowledge in any particular subject. Often, while taking the tests, our minds are preoccupied with the information we have learned for other tests and other classes. In AP classes, they were a detriment because we'd have to prepare for a massive exam while simultaneously reviewing for the tests. The tests themselves are placed at an inconvenient time in the year, as classes have almost never finished their required textbooks by the prescribed date. I also do not think that it's right to judge teachers on their CST scores. A teacher may teach one class of students who don't care about their education or testing and another class choc-full of students who actually want to do well. Students can 'Christmas tree' the entire test and either receive 'far below basic,' or 'advanced.' At the end of the year, teachers really can do no more than say "I've done my best…" However, is there a more objective way of evaluating teachers and schools? I personally don't think there is. Grades and tests vary from school to school, and some students receive grades they didn't deserve. Student evaluations only go so far as to objectively review the teacher at question; one who was more strict may receive worse reports than a teacher who allowed students to get away with murder.

Skills like quick thinking and improvisation cannot be expressed nor measured by a multiple choice test. A better way of rating knowledge is to have students answer questions orally in front of a panel. However, students with a fear of public speaking will do badly, thus bringing down themselves and their schools. Unfortunately, the best system we have for rating the school is the CST test, however imperfect it may be.

I think, as parents, they should be able to see how a teacher's past students have preformed on tests. It's a reflection of how the teaching in the class went and it is an indicator of how their child's year may go with that instructor. All teachers have their privacy in this matter, obviously since most won't share past test scores right now. But, isn't that saying something? Teachers should be doing a good enough job in teaching their classes and motivating students to the best of his or her abilities. Granted, there are dead beat students who do nothing but harrass teachers and make like a living youknowwhat for them, but if a teacher is doing their job well, the students should do their jobs relatively well too. As a student, I don't think it's fair to put full blame or credit on either myself or the teachers. It takes both to receive admirable scores. Although I will say, some classes were lower than others and I will not say it was because of me. Previous AP classes, one in particular, really affected how my grade was in one area because of how unorganized the teacher was. She did not bother to teach the class, she had us taking chapter notes in class that we didn't really do work on, take a test immediately after we finished the motes, outlining other chapters at home, and expecting us to do well on exams at the same time. It was ridiculous. Sadly, even as AP kids, a lot of us struggled to keep things straight, because the class was a circus! But overall, it is a combination of the two that gets a student good or bad grades, and gets a teacher good or bad results.

  17. I think in theory it would be a good idea to display the scores from students of that teacher because it would make them try harder to make thier students get good scores, however this isn't a good way to judge thier skill as a teacher. This is because many kids will not try on their CST's or simply do not care. This can have a negative effect on teachers and potentially cause school's to fire a good teacher because of bad test scores.

  20. I think that it might be good to know how good of a teacher that teacher is by her past students test scores, but in the end its up to the student on how well he/she does on these tests. It is very true what everyone says, that just because these tests dont effect your grade, many choose not to take them seriously. Although I will admit that in the past I had to guess on a few questions because I never remembered my teacher ever going over a few of things on the test.

  21. To evaluate a teacher's teaching and the school as a whole based on state testing such as the CSTs, has two sides. It may be that the teacher is an excellent teacher and the students are just not able to understand what is being taught. On the other side, the teacher may be a horrible teacher and is not giving much help to the students, decreasing the scores of the students. As for evaluating the school based on state testings, there is that possible minority that does not care much for state testings and doesn't do well, making the school seem like a "bad" school. Unless, every single student tries their best with what they learned and does well, improving the school's image. Finding methods on how to evaluate teachers is difficult because every single person has a different way of learning and a different wanting of teaching. To measure how an entire school is doing is also difficult too due to the fact that of students who care and students who don't give much care about testings. Everything has two sides.

Parents should be able to se the scores to because if the teacher did good on the test then parents would feel more comfortable with their student being taught by a teacher who did well on the test. It's kinda hard to say that teachers have to be evaluated by there students scores because some students just don't care about their grades and tha would reflect badly on the teacher.

The teacher should do their best at teaching and apply what they know so their students can succeed and the test scores will reflect on the teacher where it is the students job to apply themselves to that certain exam, where some students might not care about the exam or even school.

I Agree with Trista! teachers should not be held accountable for our scores and i think that this is not how schools should asses the teaching. Many kids just BS the test and then our scores go down and our school suffers. I think that schools should be assessed by a certain percentage of passing students or by GPA's but not these silly CST tests.

  26. Parents definatley deserve to have the right to view the past records of teachers who are instructing their kids. It helps in understanding whether a child does not understand a subject or if the teachers teaching methods are to blame. Students have a responsibility also to get help and learn. I generally do not blame my CST scores on my teacher. Usually either I get the subject or I don't and I take rthat upon myself. It helps though if the teacher's methods are well thought out and effective.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I dont't believe the CST tests do a great job in evaluating the way teachers should be evaluated. It's possible to have a student that just plainly does not pay attention or do any homework in a teacher's class. Then when that student is supposed to take the CST test, poor results are reflected on the teacher even though the low test score was the student's fault for a lack of work. Another example of why I don't think the CST scores are a good way to evaluate teachers is because many students learn at different paces. For example, I am in an advanced math class (taking Algebra 1 my 7th grade year which put me in AP Calculus as a junior and currently in BC Calculus as a senior). There is no "calculus" test for the CST math versions, so each year in high school I was required to take a summitive math test which combined algebra 2, geometry, and trigonometry together. If I did poorly on a math CST test, it would be because I was tested on material I learned two years ago. This would reflect poorly on my math teacher who currently is teaching me completely different material than what was on the test. Plus some students are just bad test takers or maybe just had a bad day when they took the CST tests and that reflected on their score. Whatever way you look at it, I don't think it's fair to base a teacher's performance strictly on that particular test.

As a student I do give some of the credit to my teachers because they are the ones who taught me or didn't teach me in the right way. i think test scores are a good way to evaluate teachers to a point. For example, as a student i know that students forget information that they are taught in the beginning of the school year. I think that teachers should also have an in class evaluation to see if they are teaching effeiciently.

  29. I think that there are much better ways to test how much somebody has learned in school. One of which would be a verbal test to see if you know the main ideas about what you were supposed to learn about. A lot of the questions on tests seem to be trick questions or worded weird or worded with big words that you don't know.If you could just talk out what you know about the declaration of independence for example, they would know a lot more about what you took in from your schooling.

No matter what, CST testing to high schoolers is a joke. I only know about a handful of people that actually take that test seriously. Students know that the test is not going to effect their gpa or grade in the class so they decide to just breeze through the test. I personally am not a good test taker so I believe to hold a teacher accountable for what I do bad is not right. I think a parent has the full right to see previous test scores, but then again the parent shouldn't judge on how good of a teacher they are based on just those scores.

In theory, judging a teacher's performance on how well their students perform on the standardized tests sounds like a good idea. However, there are several matters that need to be taken into account. I have heard several students say that they didn't try on their CSTs. Why? Many believe it's a waste of time because the scores don't directly affect them. Teachers may have fully prepared their students with what was going to be on the test, but if the students didn't even try, why should their scores reflect the performance of the teachers? I also don't agree with this idea because some students just aren't good test takers or may have been having a bad day. These are just a few of the many reasons why evaluating a teacher based on the students' scores isn't fair.

  32. Emily Geiszler, Bauer, Period 4August 25, 2010 at 5:20 PM

I believe that Randi Weingarten, the president of the American Federation of Teachers, was right in trying to convince the LA Times not to publish the list of over 6000 teachers' student's achievements on the standardized tests. As Weingarten stated, "this data should only be considered as a part of a well-rounded evaluation of a teacher's performance" because one test cannot confirm anything concretely. There is no benefit for students who take the CSTs, so many do not bother to try and do well. There are no incentives, positive or negative, for students to do well on the standardized tests; the tests are essentially a grade for the school and their teachers. It is a big joke for many students and I personally have heard kids bet each other who can get the lowest grade and 'make the best picture on the score sheet in the bubbles.' When taking the test, students could be having a bad day or could be worried about another test later in the day so it is silly to try and grade a teacher based on this one set of tests. Teachers should be evaluated based on a series of tests spanning a period of several months and the way that they teach things to students should also be evauluated. The most important thing, I believe, that needs to be considered when evaluating anyone in the educational system is attendance; if either student or teacher is exxcessively tardy or absent, test scores will most likely suffer because of it.

I do not believe it's fair for teachers to be evaluated on their students' test scores. Most of the kids don't try on the CSTs and don't care what they get on it so they'll just christmas tree it. I've had some great teachers in the past and all of their students do good on the tests because they didn't care. That doesn't change the fact that they are a good teacher though. As for their privacy, i think it should be kept alone. It isn't anyone's business to be looking at what they got. People aren't supposed to look at other students' test scores unless they say it's fine. What makes a difference if it's the teacher's score? Besides, maybe they were bad test takers like some students now. it doesn't change the fact that they are still smart even though they didn't test well. So with all that said, i don't think teachers should be judged on their students' test scores, and their privacy should be left alone.

  34. Parents have the complete right to know a teacher's history of test scores because it is their student taking the class, so they may want to know if their student will do well on tests. I would give teachers credit for my CST score, but students should be able to learn the content on their own as well. Teachers should not only be evaluated based on their students test scores because the CST cannot measure how well a teacher does their job, they should be observed by other educators as a form of evaluation.

When it comes to basing test scores off of a teachers ability to teach, I believe that the teachers have a right to their privacy. I've never heald a teacher responsible for my poor/good test scores. Teachers are to teach, while their students are there to focus, learn, and ask questions when they don't understand something. Simple things such as paying attention, participating in classroom discussions, taking notes, and the time you put into study sessions will be the biggest inpact of your test results. The teachers should not be evaluated in their jobs based on their students' test scores, because the teacher is fully aware of the material and its the students job to listen and apply what they have learned. Some teachers even have an unique way of teaching and their students take a certain lesson to heart, using that same focal point in their future everyday life. I believe that they proper way to evaluate teachers is his/her ability to answer their students' questions and the teacher/student interaction factor.

  36. The CST's are made to see how well your teachers are teaching, but I dont believe that it's a good way of seeing teachers success in the classroom. Top be completely honest, when a student, including myself, hears that it wont effect their grade, we immedeatly think "yes! i can bubble all C's and be done!" we dont see how it will help us, so we dont try. Knowing this information should inform the government that it isnt an accurate way of judging a teacher. As for the 6000 teachers names being published in the newspaper, it isnt fair at all. Knowing that students dont try one these tests, means that the result s are invalid.

  37. I don't think a teacher should be punished for what students do, and don't do. I know many people who don't give a crap about the CST's, and just fill in the answers to pass time. all test have one purpose and only one purpose only. to gauge how much you know or learned during an alloted time. CSTs do a really bad job of gauging what we know for the fact that even with review we don't always remember what we were taught at the beggining of the year. To accurately do an annalysis of what we've learned a year long state testing needs to occur. Or use the test the teachers give us or prepare test for the teachers. Based on this way you can more accurately base what we learn through the year. Also testing always does come at a bad time by that time of the year kids have given up or space out to much thinking about senior activities or the summer. to base teachers on these test is even more horrible than to base what the student knows. Teachers have no control of what a student does in class because some just put up an act for them and do nothing and fail. so no one time state testing will account for what the teachers do or what the kids know.

Having had about ten years of experience with taking the CSTs alongside the company of my peers, I don't think I stand alone in saying that I am sure glad they are a thing of the past. Saying this, I believe the tediousness we must endure in taking them is a waste of time if it is to evaluate how well a teacher has been doing his/her job. For one, even if the test taker has been taught well by the teacher, there is still the option he/she has of just making random pictures with the bubbles just to get the test done and overwith-- which I find many of us tend to resort to. Secondly, I don't think I've ever had a teacher that was able to cover all of the required material in the textbook to make sure we were all well familiarized with the standards we were to be tested on by the testing date, as it comes much sooner than the true end of the academic year. Lastly, not all that we learn is a product of our schooling. I know, from experience, that for example with the English test, much of the vocabulary I was tested on throughout the years, I didn't learn in school. I picked it up from normal day to day conversation with my parents or some other educated adult. For the above reasons stated, our CST scores are not a well represented "grade" for our teachers, and I do not believe they should be able to be accessed by the public unless it's just our own individual scores being viewed by OUR own two parents, and our parents only. Unfortunately, I don't think there is any other evaluation that would better represent the teacher and his/her skill so it seems to me, the students following the class of 2011 are also still going to be stuck as we have been, taking the CSTs for many years upon years to come.

If continuously students from the same teacher year after year do not do well, then there probably is something wrong with the way lessons are being taught. However individual student's scores should not have an effect on the teacher because some student do well on test while other fail even if they know he material. Evaluation scores should be shared between the administration and the parents of the students but not to the whole public. Then the administration and parents coudl work together for a better teaching enviornment. Sloan p.3

So my opinion on this blog is that teachers shouldn't be evaluated because it is proven that a lot of the students try on their CST. The other students though they do try hard because they want a really good future for themselves and do whatever it takes to make life happen for them. I am truly one of those people that try hard because i want a great life ahead of me and i care about myself and everyone else.

To some individuals it is important for them to get a high score, but for others they could care less. so i think if a student has the option to pick, it would be more helpful to the students that care. In addition to that, i believe some teachers also try to high students scores. unfortunately some teachers try harder than other.

I personally think CST scores are a poor way to determine how well a teacher is doing. Some students are poor test takers, that's not the teachers fault. And other students believe that since they don't get graded on CST tests, they don't need to take it seriously. Both these would cause the results of CST testing to reflect poorly on the student. He or she might normally be an A student but only appear to be a B or C student to the state. The teacher shouldn't be punised for this system flaw. Thats not an accurate representation of their teaching.

If a teacher spends time with his/her class to encourage good CST scores then the teacher is doing their job. When a teacher spends less time with their students to explain how important the tests are and doesn't prepare them, then it is reflected in the results and the teacher should recieve consequences for not doing there job. Granted, many students don't give a damn about the CST and that can affect the teacher's accountability but it still comes down to how much time and care the teacher puts in to preparing his/her students beause any student can succeed and will succeed with the right leaders; and that starts with teachers.

I think it is unfair for teacher's CST scores to be made public because it is private information and it isn't completly the teachers fault if a student decides to christmas tree a test they don't care about. It is unfair for teachers to be judged by the test scores of a test that won't effect a students grade because there is less incentive to do well. Teacher's should be evaluated on a final that is given to students for a major portion of the students grade. This gives more incentive for the student to do their best, allowing the teachers to be evaluated more fairly. (Bauer/Sloan)

This is also part of the reason that I believe that parents should not see a teacher's classes past scores. The other reason is that maybe the kids aren't trying, or even are not capable of scoring well on these tests. We can never truly rank a teacher, because they all have different students, who may or may not try to do well on any assements, and if we release these scores, parents may unfairly judge teachers who are not underpreforming, it is only their students who are. Parents should not be allowed to see teachers' tests scores because they are not accurately reporting whether the teacher is doing a good job. I think the best way for schools to know if the teacher is doing a good job is the final. Two teacher who teach the same subject should give the same final to at least 3 periods. Then based on those results you'd know if the teacher is doing a good job. Those test scores parents should be allowed to see, because it will accurately report the teachers ability to teach. That way parents can tell wheather their child didn't do their part or the teacher sucked. this way parents can help keep teachers who are efficient teaching in school and those who are not then they should be studying in college.

I do not think that everything should be judged based on cst results. Most teachers work hard all year long trying to prepare students for the cst so that they look good, and the school looks good. Parents do not need to see a teachers exact scores, the school administration should look at them and if they are not doing so well, something should be done to improve their teaching abilities. By the end of the year, not every student is going to remember everything that they learned throughout the year. The school would be better off if they took smaller tests throughout the year rather than one big test at the end of the year

  85. The CST scores are accurate to a point. Granted, there are many students who at least claim to not try on the test, and there are those of us who do. I am one of those people, as you probably all already know. This being said, i know they are an accurate representation of a teachers ability to teach when the students take them seriously. I always score advanced in everything, except my sophomore year in math alone. i received a basic in the math category. I received all advanced and a basic. the next year i once again had all advanced scores, and i had a different teacher. i attribute this drastic drop in my score directly to the teacher i had. i got a good grade in the class but failed the CST test.
This experience drives me to think that the teachers scores should be published and the teachers judged teacher-worthy based on that info. It may seem harsh, but i am of the opinion that America is going to need to step it up if we want to remain a leading power in the world. The best way to step it up, in my opinion, is to get rid of bad teachers and replace them with good ones.

  87. I do not think that CST test scores are accurate representations of how well a teacher teaches because there are too many factors affecting test scores. Some people are just naturally better at taking tests, and some people just don't care. Depending on how motivated a person is they may not care what scores are recorded or how that may affect their school. Also, any number of other factors can affect how an individual does on a test. Maybe they did not get enough sleep or an adequate breakfast, or maybe there is something personal going on in their lives that can affect their performance. How well a teacher does in teaching students what is required is a factor in test performance but there are just far too many factors to consider, so teachers cannot be the only ones held accountable. Alot of students these days really dread going to the next period in the day, or studying for that final, or staying up a half an hour to do some homework. It is not the teachers fault the student is lazy; there are also many students that try try try yet their scores on the CST cannot make up for the students who just have a whatever attitude. Now we have really awesome teachers at GHS, yet we have some teachers that I question just because they seem like they do not care and have no clue how to teach. Students need in depth teachers like Ms. Ruggiero for example, I was placed in her class for 2 years and I learned ALOT and scored higher on my CSTs because of how in depth she was. Yes she was strict and yes it was ALOT of effort but it payed off in the long run. Personally if we had more teachers like that our CST scores would increase dramatically. I believe that it would be a great mistake to assume that the student score has a relation to the students tests scores. Even though sometimes they are not all cases are the same and how will they be able to tell if it was because of the teacher or the student having problems in that subject area. In my case there is certain subjects that are strong, such as history and english, but that does not mean that each of the teachers i have had were the best. In other occasions i had a good teacher and got good grades but did not do so bright in a section(chem). It would most definitely be an injustice to judge the teachers by our scores.

Whether the student passes his or her cst's is their responsibility whether they get a pass or fail grade. Most students don't pass their cst's from the lack of not paying attention in class and the teachers should not get all the blame for this. The idea that teachers should have some privacy, can only go to a certain point. There is information that most of the time teachers arent allowed to share with their students, but if our CST scores are being shared and evaluted, teachers should be to. Although teachers and schools are being evaluated through the students, like most of my classmates say," some students just dont care". It is true, some students work hard to be educated, while others are immature and care about the present and not the future. There must be another way to see how the teachers and schools are doing without loosing points due to those who dont seem to care. The teachers, since the beginning of the school year say that all the work they do is for the students to do good on their CST's, but sometimes standards are not all we learn from them and were not tested on that so why evaluated them for what the students do and not for their hard work? Throught my time in Galt high, ive learned life lessons and things that make me a better person.Shouldnt that be what counts?

Basically my idea of skills is not being able to find the hyperbole of whatever. If you know what your going to be doing for a living, or have a general idea, then you should do what is available to help yourself so you are prepared for your future life and are ready to support yourself and become successful. A recommended method for measuring a teacher would be whether or not the students are learning the material by tests taken during the year ( not toward the end such as the CST ) as well as their general performance. Making students take a test with no value or meaning is pointless because a percent of the students either don't care, or see no reason to bother putting an effort into it. Because these students are there, it will appear negatively on a teachers track record. I advise giving a reason or incentive to excel in the CST.

Teachers shouldn't be evaluated on the student's test scores. Most students don't take these kinds of tests serious because there so long and take a lot of time. Many kids think the tests don't affect them in any way because its nt a grade to them. Even with a kid having a bad teacher, the kid could have been teaching themselves the whole time and giving the teacher the credit.

They have the right to know who is teaching their child and if they are doing a good job... because no parent wants their child not learning what they need to know. I also believe that it is fair to rate a school on these scores because all students should acquire the same learning experience from their teachers. A school is only as good as its faculty and students.

However, the tests might not be such a good judging tool of a teacher's competence. Many times student do not try on the test or they do not pay attention in class and during the test they do not have enough knowledge of the subject.

  113. I agree with Marcos Avalos. It is very unfair and stupid to base a teacher's teaching ability by how good their CST's were. First of all, the score doesnt't affect a person's grade, so there really isn't any incentive to test well. And second, determining a teacher's ability off of someone else's score. That right there is taking their fate out of there on hands. Why should a teacher's reputation be based off of kid's taking an irrelevant test?

  116. It is difficult to tell where the blame truely lays when it comes to test results. Is it the teacher's fault for not explaining the information properly or the student's for not studying enough or at all. A test such as the CST cannot really evaluate a teacher's job unless it were at a random time that neither the teacher or student knew about. This way the teacher cannot just tell all the information on a crash course the day before and the student will show what they really know from classes not studying on their own.

in my opinion, teachers should not be evaluated on student's test scores. if a teacher is doing a bad job, it will surely show in a students grades. The CSTs for high school are actually on a middle school grade level. So it has nothing to do with the high school they are currently involved in. The teacher is just doing their job, hopfully to the best ability they can. i have learned many things from teachers that arent even in textbooks, and thats what a real teacher gives students. Something they were taught that they will use in the future that actually matters.

Most kids don't even try when they are taking these because they don't directly effect the student in any way. Teachers should not be held accountable for the grades of students. The school as a whole should evaluate the teachers based on grades of every student. People don't care about state tests because their grades won't effect their personal reports cards. Students would try a lot harder if those scores had an impact on them directly, but honestly... no one really cares about CSTs. Its not fair to the teachers or the school.

  120. I think that parents have the right to know the test scores of teachers. There really isn't much privacy for a teacher when it comes to the learning of a student. I think about half the credit of your test score goes to the teacher. The other half is whether or not you took the tome to study extra (which no one ever does) if you slept well the previous night or if you even showed up to take the test. I think a school should be judged partially on the test scores, because you could have the best teachers in the world but if the student doesn't apply themselves then it doesn't matter, and that's not the schools fault. However, schools should be judged one way or another and test scores are simple way to do so. Other things you learn in school might be communication skills and artistic skills and that can't be measured by a multiple choice test. I don't think it should be either. Schools should teach you the basics that you need for college like they do now, they should also teach you communication and job skills that you will need for your future and for college.

I think that teachers should not be judged based on these test scores. These test scores to me arnt fully accurate, I believe that a student can gesus most of the time and get things right but doesnt mean they know it. Also a teacher can't force students to learn the material, so even if they are teaching it well some students will still decide not to litsen. thats why I propose that it would be better to judge a teacher with student essays based on what they learned and how there teacher played a role. That way you will know a students opinion about the teacher and will really know how well the teacher did there job.

I think that parents have the right to view teacher's students test scores too compare them to ther teachers, it may be true that one teacher teaches better than another. But I do not think that teachers are to blame. Recently, I think the size of the classrooms are a big affect. More students in classes takes away the one on one time a student has with their teacher because there is too many students and one teacher. I think less students in a class can make our grades go up. Also many students don't give their 100% effort on CST tests because they are too long.

I do believe that test scores should be in the public domain of records. I honestly don’t know why a parents would want to know a teachers test score because a test doesn’t tell about a person or how they act. I honestly don’t think it’s a big deal for your teachers test scores to be in the public, I don’t believe a test makes a person.
In my CST score I would say I give my teachers some credit and give myself some credit. It’s all about what you have learned over many years and not by one teacher. I do believe that the accumulation of knowledge is a big impact into determining your SCT score but it is not always accurate. I find that my SCT scores are often the opposite what I know. For example I know that I did really well on the math in the SAT and ACT but on my CST I totally failed my math section. I don’t think it is fair for teachers to be evaluated on a student’s test scores. Some students can’t test well but be great in other areas. I think that a school should be credited more if the test scores are higher, but I also believe that each school should get the proper amount of funding it requires.
In school you learn many things that can’t be replicated on a test. You learn how to socialize with friends and also how to discover new things. I think teacher should teach to a custom test they create. I also think they should involve activates and discussions into the class. I think teachers should be evaluated on many different levels. For example they can be evaluated on test scores but also on student decision and staff decision. The best way to measure how an entire school is doing is the mood of the campus. If there is excitement and cleanliness in a school, you can assume the schools curriculum is nice. If the school is very dirty and feels unsafe, then you can probably assume the school’s students aren’t learning to their full potential. To sum it up, a school should be judge off of many different points of view and not just test scores.

  125. I think that the CST scores that a teacher has should be kept private just as any other public job evaluation or test are kept private as they should be. Parents would be reluctant to give out freely to the public tests and evaluations pertaining to their own jobs so why should teachers be asked of it. Additionally, the CSTs are a waste of time and resources and should not be used to grade a school. Because of the CST's teachers have to teach to the lowest student so that they pass the CST and the school isn't placed on academic probation. The entire system is a joke, when you have a bright student he/she is just taken for granted because he/she will, of course, will pass their CST so teachers are forced to spend disproportional amounts of time on students who simply don't care. And honestly you have to try to fail those things I Christmas treed all my test except social science took a nap instead and I still passed everything. :)

I think the majority of the same test scores should be taken into consideration for each teacher. Parents should not be able to see the history of a teacher's test scores because they may not truly reflect the teacher's teaching ability or the student's ability. The parents should be satisfied with knowing what their child scored because that is the score that is relative to them. The teacher may not be to blame for low scores because maybe some students were sick, hungry, or just didn't care. It isn't fair to judge a school based on CST scores, as the CST usually measures more about who actualy cared to take the test and less on who payed attention in class. I know this for a fact because I always tried my best ever my first CST and actually cared what I scored on them, but it wasn't until Junior year that I was enlightened on the fact that CST tests measure school performance and doesn't really affect the student that took the test, and this was also the year I learned what the term "Christmas Treeing" meant in regard to people that didn't want to take the test seriously. I'm not saying that students shouldn't care about the test, but teachers should at least state that there really isn't an incentive for indivuduals to try and also say that the test is used to measure the school's performance so that all the naive children that took the test trying their hardest realize what they were working for. Now that some teachers are offering grade boosts if their students get proficient or above as an incentive, the CST tests may actually measure intelligence.

  131. I think the teacher and their perfomance level in the class is a definite factor in students scoring. Though we all know that are quite a number of students who could care less about what the scores are or maybe just need the motivation of the homework to do good. With a poor teacher, most people lack the dedication to personally dwell through our text books without some guidance of a teacher. Some people are also poor at taking the CSTs. Some people are poor test takers or maybe simply the size can seem a laborious task that is met with minimal effort. Probably one of the most important skill we gain through school is social interaction. The ability to converse and socialize with our peers and boss like figures is something we will be faced with our entire lifes for the most parts. In conclusion, I still think that the CSTs are one of the best methods of evalutating a school despite its imperfections.

  133. I believe that a teacher should not be evaluated by the test scores of their students. Agood teacher could have sudents who do not try or who just are not great at taking test. In the case of cst's being used to evaluate are school we all students should try there best to do well so we can be lookied at in a good way.

    ReplyDelete
  134. I do not think that the CST scores are a good way to evaluate teachers. There is no incentive for the students to try on the tests and this creates a problem. Students who are in the AP classes generally get higher scores because they try harder and have harder classes so they know more of the information, sometimes from previous years. Students who are in the normal or support classes are generally not overacheivers and are just looking to pass the class. Since the CST scores do not hurt or help their grade they have no need to try hard on the test, when they are the ones that need to put in the most effort to help out their teachers. Therefore, the AP teachers may be getting lucky that their students know the curriculum from years past or other reason, while other teachers get the short end of the stick because their students just don't care. However, I do believe that teachers need an evaluation because it seems that some teachers know they can get away with doing the bare minimum. CST scores should not be a major part of a teachers evaluation; there should be some kind of testing that that gives students a reason to do their best to more accurately assess a teacher.

I think that a teacher should not be judged for the test scores of any student because even thought the teacher is the one teaching it does not mean that the student is going to do what the teacher showed that student. Some students might not care what score they get because those tests don't affect ones grade in school. The thing that is good to check is how the school does as a whole, because thats how one can notice how the students are doing. If the score for the school is good then that means that most of the students are doing good. I think that the parents of the students don't have the right to judge the teacher or school for how their student does in the exam because the students do what they know how to do correct. The teachers should not be judged becasue tey are all unique and have their own way of teaching and the students are also unique so they might learn in a different way than how the teacher teaches them.

I don't think evaluating teachers on CST scores is very fair. I mean, a lot of the students don't even try because it doesn't effect their grades. Some students even christmas tree it, thats how much they don't care. The teachers have no control over the kids if they want to try or not. There are some great teachers out there that get down graded for low CST scores. If students don't try, then how is that the teachers fault? Maybe if there was a benefit to do well on the test then students would try harder. Since it doesn't hurt them if they do bad, then they don't care. If people want to evaluate teachers then maybe they can have students fill out a survey, or have someone come in and examine them. You can't say a teacher is bad just because they have low CST scores.

The thing about the privacy issue is that people wanna know something that really doesnt account to them. Let the child figure out what is happening with their life on their own. If a teacher should so choose to not show test grades it could be for not only the privacy of his/ her classroom but for the privacy of the student. Many parents take the test grade and judge the student on what they should be getting "oh you have an A" would mean thats what you need forever now in the tests the student takes, well sometimes its not that simple. "You have a F" would say that maybe they didnt try or something, this of course is not always the case either. A child who is led in life by the way their parents react to their test grades could cause further problems to their educational career. That privacy should really be chosen by the student that is able to know what they want.

  155. Standardized testing is a poor indication of students' academic proficiency. Many schools put too much of an emphasis on these tests because of the pressure put on them by the state. These schools have their teachers teach to the test all year long. Their students consequently only have a shallow knowledge of the subject matter rather than a deep understanding of the big picture. A teacher cannot be evaluated based on one simple set of numbers. There are many more variables to consider. Teachers need to be evaluated within their own schools and districts rather than by the state. Yes, many times administrators are too irresolute to do what is best for the student by getting rid of a bad teacher. However, quantifying students' academic capability and progress with one annual test and then using these results to evaluate teachers is not the solution.

  156. i dont think that teachers or schools should be evaluated on a student's CST scores, because its the students responsibility not anyone else's. If anything the student should be penalized or colleges should be able to view the scores a student recieves. -Alex Matedne Period 3 Mr. Bauer

  157. A student's CST scores is the students responsibility, not the teachers or the schools. There are so many more factors to judge a teacher that need to be considered rather than a bunch of test scores that most students don't care about.

  158. Judging teachers' and schools' performances by standardized test scores is, in one sense, necessary because the government wants to ensure that schools are all doing their best to teach students the basic things that they need to be a part of our educated society. However, the standardized test system is broken because there is no motivation for students to do well on tests, and the government places so much emphasis on one test. Many students do not like the pressure or work of a test and because the CST makes no reflection on their grades or attempts to go to college, they often times "Christmas-tree" the CST. The government needs to either find a way to make the standardized test or tests matter to students, or find more ways to judge teachers than just one test score.

  159. I don't feel that CST scores are a good representation of a teacher's ability, or even of a student's knowledge. I have had classes with fantastic teachers where I ended up doing poorly on the CST, and I've had classes with incredibly bad teachers where I've felt that I learned nothing, and still passed the CSTs with high scores. Based on this, I feel that state testing scores hold very little meaning, and should not be used to rank schools. Also, I feel that allowing parents to see the ranking of teachers could cause problems within the school. If a teacher's rating were low to the point of being problematic, the school should work the the teacher personally to fix it.

I think out of all the testing methods the cst is the least time consuming and easiest to score. In the perfect world every student would be able to have an induvidual test and be scored based on thir knowledge with out multiple choice questions but we don`t have time for that or the resources. The cst is far from perfect and some students get bad teachers that don`t cover the test well but thats life and some times you get stuck with a bad teacher. And besides the cst`s dont really matter cause they dont even effect your grade.

CST's have always been a burden to many students. None of them look forward to take a boring test at the end of the year when it doesn't even affect your college. They think they're going to be leaving high school soon so why try if it affects the school. These tests should be looked at by college to motivate at least some of the students, to actually take the test seriously. A parents does not have the right to look at a teacher's test scores. I my opinion, it's an invasion of privacy.

    ReplyDelete
  162. No student wants to take the CST's I mean come on its just another test. There is no other way to disguise it, yes it is an important test, but that makes it worse. Students then feel presured when they take the CST's. I think that parents should know what the teachers score were on the test. They should have the right to see if that teacher is even good at what they are teaching. What if the teacher was really bad in the test scores in what there teaching? wouldn't that make you think twice about that teacher?

    ReplyDelete
  163. I believe that this is one of those situations that could go either way. Perhaps for SOME situations a written test is good for an evaluation of general knowledge. I don't believe that it is a good way to evaluate specific knowledge or teacher performance. I know several students who just blow the test off because it doesn't affect their scores. That isn't fair to a teacher. I really can't think of an efficient alternative though so perhaps this is our best option. Perhaps a hands on evaluation may work, like on a driver's test, but I honestly don't think we will see an alternative anytime soon.

CST's are test that people dont try their best on because they dont hurt our grades. They should make the CST's worth something if not they shoulnd even bouther testing us.

  166. The test scores of teachers have nothing to do with the academics of a student, all the public needs to know about the teachers is that they are indeed qualified.

Teachers should not be judged by how well their students do on CST's, but on how well they improve from the beginning of the year, or learn the material.

  167. I learned ever since I've been in school the teachers job is to teach, the students job is to process that information and carry it along with them. The scores of a teacher should be fully and only seen by the school's staff only, there is no reason to let a parent see the teachers score, the parents sent their child to learn there and its up to that child to either pass or fail the classes.

I believe that cst scores should not have to do anything with the teachers and or school, because some students don't take the tests seriously enough for the schools or teachers to rely on them. I think the scores recieved should be college based, if you want to get into college, do a good job on the test, if not, then don't.

  170. on the one hand, a teacher is responsible for presenting the students with information that they will be tested on. but on the other hand, it is the student's responsibility to take in that information. it is a shared responsibility.
parents do have the right to know how their students' teachers ' previous students' scores have been in the past. wow that was a mouth full.
as far as professional valuation goes, test scores do not always effectively show that amount of effort and time that a teacher puts into his or her students. students do not always take these tests seriously.

  171. well...here's the thing...i know of MATH teachers that have let a student pass his class with an ESSAY not related to math. I think it is the student's responsibility to learn the material that is being taught, but it is also the teacher's responsibility to make the subject matter easy to understand for everyone. Students now, dont really care about education and it's really sad. A lot of them cant even read books, let alone simple words. Students do not take school seriously enough for schools to rely on the accuracy of the percentage. Like Katie Frogue said, it should be more college based if anything school related.

  172. On one hand, I think it's totally fair for teacher's to be judged somewhat on how their class does on their CST scores. This can aid in evaluating if the teacher is good or not. On the other hand, the CSTs don't show a lot of crucial information, and it wouldnt be fair to judge the teachers solely on one test a year.

Teachers should not have their job evalution based soley on cst scores. The cst thing could be a part of their evalution but in class observation would still be required. One teacher could have all the honors kids that get great scores, while the other could have the underachievers that don't care about school in general.

  174. Not everyone is good at testing but they can know the material very well and are capable of teaching, so I don't think knowing test scores is important. If I as a student am to prepared for CSTs, then teachers need to give knowledge on the information tested and it is my duty as a student to let the knowledge enter in my mind and study the information given so that I can earn a good test score.I don't think that it's fair for teachers to be evaluated on the test scores of the students, because he/she could have tried their hardest to make sure everyone knew their stuff, but it's up to the students to pass the test. I have learned how to sing, type, take Cornell notes, and other things that cannot be measured on a multiple choice test. School should teach students how to confront people in the proper manner, how to act in order to be socially accepted, and how to express oneself in a job interview in order to get a job. I think one way to evaluate a teacher is by going into the classroom and see how the environment is, but I think that testing might be the best way to see how the whole school is doing overall; I can't think of any other way.

  175. well I don’t think teachers should get evaluated and they shouldn’t get blamed for a students mistake that’s if the student is lazy and decides to not try on the cst’s or the tests that are given to pass high school. They also have to understand not all kids or students understand and process the curriculum that they are supposed to know and remember; as long as they try their best then I don’t think they should have a problem with anything.

I think it's a good idea for students and parents to be able to see their teachers test scores. A lot of parents are concerned with their child's education and the way they are taught and from who. Publishing teachers' scores are not a bad idea. It's very informative and helpful in choosing which classes to take. As for skills in helping children advance in CST scores, games and review are very helpful in studying instead of going over previous tests.

According to this article CST's should matter because this tells the government how good som schools are on their teaching levels and should tell them also what schools are bad so that they can take over and make it into a school of the government. Parents should be told wich teacher is better and the history of that teacher because this depend on their childrens education and depending on the teacher and the school will determine what their students will learn and how much they need to knw to have a bright future.

  181. I dont believe that it is right for teachers to be evaluated on one set of test scores. Schools should not be judged based on cst scores either. It is not very acurate because many students do not care about those tests and do not even try. Lots of kids might know what they are being tested on but struggle on tests, many students have trouble with test taking.
